Advertising hasn't always been the sophisticated psychological exercise it is today. It took decades of focus-grouping to find out what really works, and decades more to convince ad execs that women didn't respond well to being openly told their intolerable body/breath stank was keeping them from snagging a husband. You may not like some modern marketing strategies aimed at women, but click through here and have a laugh at some truly ridiculous old sales pitches.

For generations, the women of my family, otherwise avowed makeup fiends, have been refusing to wear eye shadow. My grandmother always insists that "it simply doesn't flatter us, unless you want to look like a hussy," at which point my mother shushes her but agrees.
Incipient hussiness hasn't stopped me from using shadow altogether, but sometimes I do find myself issuing similarly laconic warnings about its dangers to my younger sister and niece.

There's nothing more delicious or refreshing than a big slice of cold watermelon on a hot day. I'm craving some right now, actually, but until I can get to a farmers market, I thought I'd put together some of the juiciest watermelon beauty buys out there. From Sula's perfectly pink Paint & Peel nail polish, which comes off without remover, to Korres's Watermelon SPF Sunscreen (I love this stuff), to Clarins Sunshine Fragrance, which smells like the fruit and promises to put you in a summer vacation state of mind, here's a bumper crop of ideas for you.

A new report confirms something that will be unsurprising to most people: Beautiful people earn higher salaries than average-looking and unattractive people. The Daily Mail reports:
Economists James Andreoni and Ragan Petrie wrote: "We find a beauty premium even though beautiful people contribute, on average, no more or less than others. Attractive people make more money than middle attractive people, who in turn make more money than unattractive people."

Welcome back to Model of the Week. Today, you get a double dose of Bella beauties: Kelly and Sabrina Aldridge, a pair of 22-year-old twins from Tampa with blond hair and brown eyes.
Ever since they were young, the twins were pursued by modeling agencies and talent scouts, but it wasn't until they were 18 that they headed to Miami to model.

Dear Sugar
I am in my mid-late 30's and I have a terrible furrow in between my eyebrows and what seems like millions of fine little lines around my eyes and lips.
I feel like I am still about 5-10 yrs too young for plastic surgery (although I am tempted) and I fear that if I start botox now, I'll be a slave to it forever and I don't really want all of that poison in my face. Is that crazy?
