A $700 Hair Dryer Aims to Blow Away the Competition

The forthcoming Sedu Icon Privé hair dryer sets records in more ways than one. Not only does the $700 dryer hit new heights in retail pricing, it also features a few additional impressive numbers. More than seven years in the making, the lightweight dryer weighs just over one pound, has 18 temperature speeds, and uses 70 percent less electricity than other dryers. The main attractions for stylists investing in this premium tool: speed and size. The Icon Privé's motor works at 21,000 RPM for speedy drying, and the light weight won't aggravate hand and wrist conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome. The dryer goes on sale at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman next month, but for a more affordable peek into Sedu's drying capabilities, check out the brand's Pro Ionic Travel Dryer ($64). Despite its small size, it dries hair quickly while eliminating frizz - which is why it's a mainstay in the carry-on bag of yours truly.

Jonathan Antin Gets a Hot New Deal With Conair

You might remember him for his passionate personality in Blow Out, and now celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Antin has a hot new gig in the works. He's just been announced as the first professional spokesman for Conair's line of blow dryers, straightening irons, and more.

"I finally connected with a great line of styling tools," Jonathan told WWD. "[Now], when I'm doing hair I'm not just using my hair care line and someone else's tools," he added. Jonathan also has a few other projects in the works, including a new salon, the debut of his new hair care line in September, and the development of two TV programs.

As for Conair, though, there's talk he could eventually launch his own line of products within the brand. I've always found Jonathan to be highly entertaining, and with his feisty manner and entrepreneurial spirit, his collaboration with Conair seems perfectly fitting. What say you about this deal?

How Does an Ionic Hair Dryer Work?

While my mom's hair dryer was a standard style, I've had an ionic model for as long as I can remember doing my own hair . . . but is there any real advantage to that buzz word?

My latest science research found that ionic dryers bond water droplets on the hair shaft with negatively charged ions. It works because, well, opposites attract. Water molecules are positively charged and are attracted to the negative ions from this dryer. This breaks them down into tinier particles that dry quicker and helps seal the strands' cuticles to retain moisture in the process.

read more. Although the claims that ionic dryers work better aren't scientifically proven per se, traditional hair dryers release positive ions instead of negative ones. This means they don't have the benefit of attracting and breaking down the water as quickly, which logically exposes your hair to more heat for more time. We know the damage too much heat can bring, since that opens up hair cuticles and can result in drier, frizzier hair. Part of it could be clever marketing, but this kind of dryer still works – and sells – better for many people, including myself.
