How to Wear Glittery Liner in a Classy Way

Who ever said that glittery makeup is only reserved for the middle-school crowd? At last night's New York premiere of Amelia, it definitely wasn't Hilary Swank. Wearing an unexpected silvery-blue shadow on both her upper and lower lash lines to coordinate with her steely blue-green gown, Hilary proves that sparkling, shimmery finishes don't have to look cheesy. In fact, the cool-based shade complements her brown eyes nicely. While the general rule of thumb is to pair a bold eye with a subdued lip, I'm all for breaking rules, but when glitter is involved, less is better. Go Beyond Brown and Black With a Colorful Eyeliner

It seems to me that the majority of makeup wearers opt for the fairly standard hues of brown or black. Pretty, but a bit boring, nonetheless. For New Year's Eve I went bold with a bright blue liner, and this got me to thinking about the rainbow of colors available beyond traditional shades.

While reds, oranges, and yellows are often saved for the runway or high fashion/high drama looks, here are some tips on how to wear shades on the cooler end of the spectrum:

Bold blue: We know that blue-based red lipsticks can help neutralize the yellow cast in teeth, and did you know that blue eyeliner can help make your eyes pop? Who wouldn't want a little twinkle, eh? Recently, I chose a deeper hue for a sophisticated look with a richer contrast, applying Wet 'n' Wild Kohl Eyeliner Pencil in Deep Blue ($1.49) to the waterline of both my upper and lower lash lines. After smudging and setting with a navy shadow, I was off for evening cocktails. My friend said I looked well-rested. Wink wink.

White: Apply white liner to the inner v and lower waterline to open eyes and brighten. Try Shu Uemura Eye Light Pencil White ($18), which has a white matte shade on one side and a pearl shade on the other.
Go green: To make hazel or green eyes pop, try an emerald green shade like Tarte EmphasEyes High Definition Eye Pencil in Green ($18).
Purple power: If you have deep brown, green, or hazel eyes, a purplish shade of liner will make them stand out even more. Apply L'Oreal Le Kohl Eyeliner in Le Plum ($7.95) and watch your eyes light up.

How-To: Do It Like Loren

...and Padma and even Anne. In the most recent issue of Allure, I read a cool tip that Top Chef's Padma Lakshmi follows to create Sophia Loren-esque eyes. First, she starts by applying some black eyeliner to her lash line, then adds a blue liner on top. Simple, easy, and sexy - a classic look.

Usually, having any black and blue anywhere on my body is something I try to avoid, but we're talking Sophia Loren here, so I just had to try to duplicate this look. I began by drawing a winged out, heavy-on-the-outer-corners black line, then smudged on a deep navy liner powder. The results were dramatic, trendy, and oh-so 1960s chic.

Blue is Back, Part III: Aqua Eyeliners

Below are three electric aqua eyeliners great for creating anything from an edgy rock-star look to that of a playful party girl!

Starry-Eyed Liquid Eyeliner in Drunk Dial (17.50) is a daring liquid teal blue eyeliner that is packed with glitter. The super-fine brush makes application easy, and it is formulated with good-for-you ingredients like soothing carrot and calming cucumber.

MAC Technakohl Liner in Smoothblue ($14.50) is an ocean blue color with a frosty sheen. What's great about this mechanical liner is that you can maneuver the pencil to lay flat for a thick line, or use the tip of the point for a fine line.

The texture is soft and creamy and the color is intense! It blends easily, but you have to work fast since the color will dry to a smudge-proof finish rather quickly.

Blue eyeliner is still going strong this summer. This is one 80's look that I never thought would come back. According to Molly Roncal, a NYC Make Up artist, this trend isn't going anywhere either. So when you can't beat em, join em. Here are some FABulous blue hues.

Helpful hint: Only line the top of your eye. I said that the 80's look is back, but that doesn't mean that we are still living in the 80's so don't overdo it.

You Can Look Pretty in Purple Shadow, Too

Emma Stone sure knows how to glam it up, doesn't she? At last night's GQ Men of the Year event in LA, the actress wowed in this subtle lavender shadow. Encircling the eyes with makeup can look raccoon-like, but Emma manages to pull it off, thanks to a light touch and a soft-toned shade. Doing Drugstore: L'Oréal HIP Color Rich Cream Eyeliner

I'm a big fan of Bobbi Brown's great Long Wear Gel Eyeliner ($21) for waterlining and intense pigment, but Bobbi doesn't make bright teal, which is one of my favorite shades to wear, so I turned to HIP Color Rich Cream Eyeliner ($12). I like it because it sticks nicely on the rims of my eyes, and therefore I don't have any trouble with bright blue smudges. If you're a fan of waterlining, I highly recommend this one. Just make sure you apply your eyeliner before your under eye concealer, so that you can clean up any inadvertent slip-ups. Bonus: Something about the blue-green shade will make you feel extra runway-ready. That, and it's totally '80s cool, without the dated, neon quality.

Tonight's Eyeliner Will Be Bright and Blue

If you can't wear bright colors on New Year's Eve, when can you wear them? I'm not one to go all out with a bold hue, but a hint of tint? No problem. Inspired by the Fall Proenza Schouler runway makeup, I used Mark Metalliner ($5) to draw a thin line of shimmery blue along my upper lash line. This liner gets the thumbs-up from me because it's inexpensive, the color is bright, and the tip is extremely thin - so it's easy to use even if you're a liquid-liner novice. And even in a blurry camera-phone shot, it grabs your attention. So go ahead, have a little fun with your makeup tonight - or make it a resolution to do so in 2009.
