Blue is Back, Part IV: Electric Blue Mascaras

Welcome to the final installment of blue is back, my four part series on blue makeup. Today we are looking at a couple of bad-ass electric blue mascaras. These are great when navy feels too safe, but you're feeling scared that purple might make you look bloodshot. Blues are a great way to add edginess to a natural or smokey eye.

Bourjois Maxi Frange Maximum Length And Volume Mascara Waterproof in Bleu Bora Bora ($19) is a double-sided, waterproof mascara. It's a gorgeous color that reminds me of aqua-green waters just as they meet royal blue skies on a tropical horizon.

One side houses a comb containing a creamy formula to help separate the lashes and prevent clumping, and the other side houses a round brush that adds length and volume. Use both sides for the ultimate dramatic eye!

Sephora Mascara Fantastic Color in Blue ($6) is an ultra-vibrant mascara with cool packaging. It comes in a flexible squeezy tube, so that you can actually make use of the product at the bottom. Also, it has a new slim wand to help you create a more precise look.

Finally, Dior Show Mascara in Azure Blue ($23) is a rich, high-pigment, bright blue mascara. One coat will give you longer, thicker, curvier lashes and two coats will give you dramatic volume and shine for an electrifying runway-ready look. Begin by curling them, and apply two coats, while allowing substantial drying time in between. Remember: you heard about this mascara here first! It isn't available yet, but it will be making its debut at 2am on QVC on January 30th.

Feeling Blue? Your Cosmetics Surely Are

Yesterday, a friend pointed out her new mascara. She was wearing Benefit Bad Gal Blue, a violet-blue hue that's said to brighten the appearance of eyes. I haven't had much confidence with it-I'm worried that blue mascara will make me look like Whitney Houston circa "How Will I Know?", which is not my prerogative-but the whites of my friend's eyes did look bright. (Then again, they usually do.)

Well, it turns out the blue trend is going over very well: More than 130,000 units of Bad Gal Blue were sold during the first two weeks. Gotta Cry? These Tips Help Reduce Puffiness Afterward

I have friends who seem to be made of steel, and while they do get a good cry in every now and then, it's a rare occasion. I, however, am a little more sensitive. When the urge strikes, it's too hard for me to hold back those tears. Of course, like me, you probably don't always want to let the world know you've been weeping away. Only time will help the puffiness go away, and perhaps a dark pair of sunglasses will help, but there are a few things you can do in the meantime to reduce the swelling and redness. Six Lipstick Tips and Tricks From Poppy King

If anyone knows lipstick, it's Poppy King, queen of vibrant shades and full finishes. And since its inception in 2007, Lipstick Queen, her line of glosses, lipsticks, and lipliners, has been a success. So, who better to give tips, tricks, and quips on wearing lipstick - particularly in the red category - than King herself? The cosmetics guru recently spoke to the Independent, and here are some of my favorite takeaways:

For a contemporary look: Wear bright lipstick with simple jewelry, subdued makeup, and loose, tousled hair. Think Chloë Sevigny, who, according to King, has the ability to rock lipstick with "strength and power, but not in a threatening '80s way."
For all skin tones: Try Red Sinner ($20), which has the perfect balance of yellow and blue tones.
Pucker up: In order to develop the "entry level of reds" you'll find in Medieval Lipstick ($20), King actually used a medieval technique to create the perfect shade. Back then, it was considered inappropriate for women to add color to their lips, so they used lemon juice to create the perfect rush-of-blood-to-the-lips pucker. That's exactly what King and a chemist did to create their desired shade.
For a fresh look: Apply foundation to even out the skin. Next, apply mascara, a touch of liner or shadow, and some blush on the cheeks.
Use the tube: The best way to apply lipstick? From the tube. After blotting and applying once more, add a little on your cheeks and blend to create a cohesive look.
Can't pick?: If you're not sure which shade looks right on you, don't fear. "You can tell immediately if a lipstick suits you because it lights up your eyes, your hair, your skin," said King, "as if the sun has come out from behind a cloud."

Coming Soon: Bobbi Brown Nautical Collection

Makeup artist Bobbi Brown was inspired by a bike trip in Brittany and Normandy (jealous) when she created her Nautical Collection. "There were all of these locals that were walking around with their blue-and-white striped shirts, and they just had the most incredible skin tones - almost like stained cheeks and stained lips, that they had been out in the sun," she said in this video.

The great thing about sheer tones is they're easy to apply and blend. Plus, you can get a little more daring with your color choices. "If you don't usually wear a red or a plum or an orange tone, you can get away with it when it's very sheer," Brown added. I concur. Find out more about the collection when you read more.

Starting in May, Brown's got six Sheer Color Cheek Tints ($22) and four limited-edition punchy-toned Sheer Color Lip Glosses ($20 each) perfect for the warmer months ahead. She's also launching Perfectly Defined Mascara ($24) in black, a multicomb brush mascara that's supposed to easily wipe off in lukewarm water.
