Blue is Back, Part IV: Electric Blue Mascaras

Welcome to the final installment of blue is back, my four part series on blue makeup. Today we are looking at a couple of bad-ass electric blue mascaras. These are great when navy feels too safe, but you're feeling scared that purple might make you look bloodshot. Blues are a great way to add edginess to a natural or smokey eye.

Bourjois Maxi Frange Maximum Length And Volume Mascara Waterproof in Bleu Bora Bora ($19) is a double-sided, waterproof mascara. It's a gorgeous color that reminds me of aqua-green waters just as they meet royal blue skies on a tropical horizon.

We're seeing neon colors dominate the fashion world, but these bright, bold shades aren't limited to clothing. Celebrity makeup artist Brett Freedman (who has also been guest blogging on BellaSugar) recently shared his advice on how to work vivid hues into your makeup routine. But he has a few more things to add: his top favorite shades for getting the look are listed below.

Colored mascara: Maybelline Great Lash Mascara in Royal Blue ($4). "Apply after your usual mascara, but just to tips," Brett advises. "It's perfect for lunch with friends. In the light, your lashes will get a flash of color."
Liquid liner: Wet 'n Wild Mega Liner in Turquoise ($3). "Do you makeup as per usual, and add just the thinnest line along the top of the lashes," Brett explains. "When you blink or look down it's a beautiful surprise!"
Gloss: Estée Lauder Lip Gelee in Electric Violet ($20). "Everyone looks amazing in this shade," says Brett. "It's packed with pigment but in a very sheer, wearable formula. Pair it with an all-cream outfit to give it a little edge."
Nail polish: OPI in Fly ($9). "If you want to try it without a full commitment," Brett says of this polish from OPI's Nicki Minaj collection, "do it on your toes and see what feedback you get."

Add Some Sparkle to Your Holidays With Glittery Blue Shadow

Paula Patton is stunning no matter what she's wearing, but at yesterday's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol premiere in London, she had an extra sparkle in her eye - literally. The actress looked festive as can be wearing glittery blue shadow that perfectly enhanced her brown eyes. To re-create the look, waterline the entire eyes with a waterproof eyeliner in black. Then, create the illusion of thicker lashes by applying a black pencil liner to the upper lash lines, lightly diffusing the line with a smudger brush. Top off with a charcoal shadow on the lids, two layers of black mascara on the upper lashes, and the glittery-blue shadow of your choice on the lower lash lines and inner corners of the eyes. A neutral gloss and true pink blush will keep it from looking overdone.

What We're Sweet On: The Cleanser That's Just For Mascara

Leave it to the lash-obsessed people at Talika to formulate a makeup remover that's supposed to "feed" your fringes. Their new Lash Conditioning cleanser ($24) is an impressive blue gel that handily removes any mascara, even the waterproof variety. The directions suggest you pump cleanser onto a cotton pad and then swipe it across your lashes, but it's actually more effective to soak a square of toilet paper in the stuff and do it that way. You also don't have to rinse afterward, although doing a little clean up around your eyes certainly isn't a bad idea. We can't speak to whether it really makes lashes stronger, but it definitely does make them feel soft and healthy in a way most drying, alcohol-based makeup removers don't.
