Aug 26 2009 - 11:59am How many foundations do you try before you hit the right one? Is it two, five, or even 10? Bobbi Brown Cosmetics recently commissioned a study of 1,000 makeup-wearing residents of the UK to find out.
I used to have the perfect foundation - Estee Lauder Illuminate/Luminous (something along those lines). The shade was "Aura" and it was a porcelain white that complimented my skin tone and
made me look healthy even with the palest of skin colors. They stopped making it a few years ago and I am still searching for something that matches my pale skin tone so well.
I've most certainly spent hundreds of dollars on foundation in my lifetime... but I'm not sure I've yet found the perfect one! MAC Studio Sculpt has come very close, and I'm quite fond of
MUFE Mat Velvet+, but... the sky's the limit when it comes to this sort of thing!
Also, I don't know if this is a UK thing or maybe just a drugstore makeup thing, but whenever I'm browsing the lower-end cosmetics at Boots, there seems to be a super-limited range of shades
in most of the brands, even more than what's normal for American drugstore makeup.
Without counting the drugstore brands that I tried when I was in high school, I've tried a couple of MAC ones (the Studio Fix Fluid was a really good one), Bare Minerals, Diorskin Nude (this
one was good, but pretty pricey), the Laura Mercier oil-free foundation (made my skin oily..lol), and now I'm using Make Up Forever HD Invisible Cover Foundation. It's pretty much the same as
the Dior one in terms of quality, but a little bit cheaper. I think the MAC might've actually covered me better than any of those though, but I stopped shopping at MAC about a year ago. It's
really hard for me to find a foundation with the right shade - I have fair skin and most of them are too dark for me. Hopefully I'll be sticking with MUFE for a while!
It's actually pretty easy for me to find a good foundation. Right now, I use MUFE Mat Velvet, MUFE HD, or a combination of the two. (My skin color fluctuates so much during the summer, so the
shade of HD I have is for when it's light, the shade of Mat Velvet is for when it's darker, and I combine them when it's somewhere in between.)
I hate MAC foundation. It makes me break out so badly.
I don't understand...Prescriptives CUSTOM...compared to how much people are spending, it's not that expensive, and you can add moisturizer, brightening, etc. This way you can exactly match
your skin!
I never used to wear foundation, but since I've found MAC's Studio Fix, I wear it every day. I went to the store to be color matched and only buy that shade.
I tried Prescriptives custom and have 4-5 attempts of having the color adjusted I gave up. So far, Bare Minerals is working for me. Every few years my skin changes so the hunt begins anew.
I use MAC Studio Fix as well and have been usuing that one for years. I find that they have a great range of colors for African Americans and it blends and doesn't break me out. For drug
stores I have tried a few here and there and found Revlon and Maybelline to match me pretty well - that is when I can find the darker shades in a store...MAC all the way though. I have been
flaunting w. trying the Makeup Forever bc I have heard such good things.
I have always had a difficult time finding a foundation..they're always too pink/orange/pale for my light olive complexion and also not the right texture for my dry skin. I finally settled on
Benefit's You Rebel Lite tinted moisturizer, which is about $30 a tube.
I think I tried 5 foundation before I found the right ONE back in february and I reckon it must have cost me about $200 as well, or maybe a little less.
Yogaforlife: I've got quite a fair skin tone too and I was adviced at Sephora to try the Make Up For Ever HD foundation, and it's been my little miracalous discovery of the year, the lightest
shade is 115 (the one I use) you should check it out, I hope it will do the trick for you too

1Just googled it - it was called Enlighten but they don't sell it anymore (at least not in Aura).

7Prescriptives made me break out. I also think only some of their technicians are well-trained, so sometimes your "custom" color isn't the right one.

12Everyday Minerals! But I've tried a number over the years, mostly they made me break out or they were the wrong shade.
