Which Hollywood Hon Is Wearing a Trendy Bun?

Back in September when Spring 2009 Fashion Week was going down, I mentioned that a bun trend seemed to be surfacing. Fast forward a few months, and I'm not surprised to see lots of buns on different Hollywood hons.

Take Diane Kruger and Nicole Kidman (pictured right), for instance. While my hair isn't quite long enough to wear this classic style - and I'll have to stick to the cinnamon sticky variety for now - let's see if you can guess who's wearing this chic updo with a twist.

How-To: Create A Classic Loopy Bun

The loopy bun is the complete opposite of shaggy, low-maintenance hair. But for those of you who are getting ready for prom or a formal event, this classic hairstyle is an elegant option. The trick is to make it look more modern and less severe. Instead of slicking the front of your hair back Evita-style, try styling hair when it is dry and don't use any gel. Also, let loose tendrils fall around your face and muss the loops in the back once you are finished for a more unkempt look.

To step-by-step directions on how to create the loopy bun at home, read more.

Step 1: Brush hair back into a ponytail. Make it low if you want the bun to lie low on your neck, or make it high if you want it to look perky on back of your head. Wherever you choose, secure the ponytail tightly with an elastic band or cord.
Step 2: Divide hair into four, five or however many loops you desire, and wrap each section around a velcro roller. Then pin it with a bobby pin to secure it in place.
Step 3: Next, apply heat to the rollers, mist hairspray over and let it cool. Once your hair is room temperature, gently unwind the rollers, twist the hair under to form a loop and use a bobby pin to secure the loop. Repeat until all of the loops are styled in either a clover, flower or asymmetrical style.
Step 4: Tame flyaway hair with a light mist of hairspray.

Trend Alert: Spring's Haute Hair

Last week we saw lots of haute hair and makeup from the catwalks of the 2008 Spring Couture Fashion Shows. While most of the looks were wild and over-the-top, there was one traditional hair theme that seemed to keep popping up. Whether it was styled tight and low at Valentino, in the middle of the head and accessorized at Armani Privè or worn high with some height at the crown at Chanel, the bun is this moment's "it" hair. Love it or hate it, even celebs are sporting it as their style of choice on weekends.

Trend Alert: The Sunday Bun

Ah, I love seeing celebrities looking natural and down-to-earth. This is the kind of hairstyle that everybody wears when you can't be bothered to primp, but you've got to get out of the house and get your day started. I like to call this look the Sunday bun, but really it's just a casual, messy updo that requires only a hair elastic or clip and serves the purpose of getting your hair out of the way.

Katherine Heigl wears hers low, while Hayden Panettiere and Christina Aguilera take it higher. I'd love to see stars stepping out in easy, low-maintenance styles like this more frequently. What beauty look do you wish you saw more of in Hollywood?

Love It or Hate It? Sarah Jessica Parker's Braided Bun

Is it the summer of braids or what? Sarah Jessica Parker was wearing a plaited bun at the opening of a Valentino fashion exhibition in Rome. I'm not sure that this heavy look is the most flattering choice for her, but I could be in the minority. What do you think of SJP's 'do?

Who Looks Better in a Ballet Bun?

Both Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan opted for mature ballet-style buns at the Costume Institute Gala in NYC. Although they both look very pretty, I think Mischa pulled off her bun with just a tad more class, since it was smoother and sleeker than LL's messier 'do. Who do you think looked better?

2009 American Music Awards: Selena Gomez

Adorable Disney-ite Selena Gomez always looks pretty and age-appropriate when she walks the red carpet. Tonight, she went elegant, wearing her curls in this lovely, loose bun and letting tendrils fall free to frame both sides of her face. I love that her eye makeup was extremely simple and that her lip gloss and blush were both almost sheer. I think she struck a good balance of red carpet glam and young-lady makeup, but what's your opinion? Is this just right for a 17-year-old, or is it too much?

Diane is just as dynamic when it comes to her hair as she is with the roles she takes. In the past couple months, she's had oodles of offbeat bobby pins, and worn her hair up, down, and in every pretty variation in between. She even started the hot fishtail braid trend back in May. In the last couple of days, she's worn both these soft, romantic mermaid waves and this modern, minimalist messy bun. She looks great in both, but which style do you think suits her best?

Since she often opts for enviable hairstyles, it's no surprise I'm admiring both of these looks from Diane Kruger. She chose the messy bun with barely-there barrette for the Paris premiere of Pour Elle, yet went with a sleek updo at the Bambi Awards. I like the wispy tendrils from the loose bun but prefer the slickly pulled back look of the other one – I'd love to take a little bit of both 'cause I'm having trouble naming a fave. Not considering her drastically different makeup on each of these dates, which appeals more to you?
