Makeup Artist Robin Black Talks Fall Trends: Part 1

The look she creates, like the perfectly lined pout, pretty blush, and huge '80s sunglasses she styled M.I.A. up in for a performance last month, is defined by its classic prettiness but with a strong element that makes it pop. For some expert post-Fashion Week analysis, I spoke with Black, who runs the Face section of LA's Warren-Tricomi salon and does some beauty writing of her own, about how the looks we saw on the ramps are going to translate into magazines (also known as editorial) and eventually onto the drugstore shelves. 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards: Chloë Sevigny

I find Chloë Sevigny to be fairly polarizing - either you love her or you hate her. I'm in the former camp and tend to think she can do no wrong on the red carpet. Sure she's sometimes a bit over the top, but what's life without risks? Anyway, for tonight's look, her overall appearance was rather tame. She wore her hair down in a very California-not-trying-too hard way. The real statement was her bright red lip - the rest of the makeup was much more downplayed, including her heavily mascara-ed lashes. What do you think? Do you have Big Love for this look, or are you not digging it?

Trend Alert: New Year, Long Waves

OK, I know it's nothing all that earth-shattering since long waves have been in fashion long before the Farrah Fawcett days. But this New Year's Eve, it was all about the soft cascading curl. Whether it was a more-refined look like Ashlee Simpson and Eva Longoria Parker or tousled and undone à la Molly Sims and Chloë Sevigny, the look was still sexy - and a little more inspired than pin-straight locks. Want some loose waves? Keep a large-barreled (at least one inch or larger) curling iron open and wrap your hair around the barrel for a few seconds and release. Is this the iconic hairstyle of the 2000s? We have one more year to find out, but I'm betting yes.

Love It or Hate It? Chloë's Chloé Ad

Nope, that's not a typo in the title. Chloë Sevigny ads for the forthcoming Chloé fragrance are out, and although the fragrance won't be in stores until March, you can peek at the photography now. I'm not always a fan of Chloë, but this shot is amazing - her full brows are especially pretty. What do you think of Chloë for Chloé?

Which Lipstick Looks Best on Chloë?

Chloë Sevigny recently talked about her love of bold lips. I guess it's her thing with her pale skin and blonde hair, but she looks so fantastic in the bright dress and nude lip (at far right) that I hope she'll reconsider her color choices. Six Lipstick Tips and Tricks From Poppy King

If anyone knows lipstick, it's Poppy King, queen of vibrant shades and full finishes. And since its inception in 2007, Lipstick Queen, her line of glosses, lipsticks, and lipliners, has been a success. So, who better to give tips, tricks, and quips on wearing lipstick - particularly in the red category - than King herself? The cosmetics guru recently spoke to the Independent, and here are some of my favorite takeaways:

For a contemporary look: Wear bright lipstick with simple jewelry, subdued makeup, and loose, tousled hair. Think Chloë Sevigny, who, according to King, has the ability to rock lipstick with "strength and power, but not in a threatening '80s way."
For all skin tones: Try Red Sinner ($20), which has the perfect balance of yellow and blue tones.
Pucker up: In order to develop the "entry level of reds" you'll find in Medieval Lipstick ($20), King actually used a medieval technique to create the perfect shade. Back then, it was considered inappropriate for women to add color to their lips, so they used lemon juice to create the perfect rush-of-blood-to-the-lips pucker. That's exactly what King and a chemist did to create their desired shade.
For a fresh look: Apply foundation to even out the skin. Next, apply mascara, a touch of liner or shadow, and some blush on the cheeks.
Use the tube: The best way to apply lipstick? From the tube. After blotting and applying once more, add a little on your cheeks and blend to create a cohesive look.
Can't pick?: If you're not sure which shade looks right on you, don't fear. "You can tell immediately if a lipstick suits you because it lights up your eyes, your hair, your skin," said King, "as if the sun has come out from behind a cloud."

Love It or Hate It? Mischa Barton Is Blonde Again

After flirting with dark brown and red hair this year, Mischa Barton is getting back to her blonde roots. (Hee!) Here she is at the Belfast premiere of Closing the Ring, a film that's being released in the UK before it heads elsewhere. The color makes her look like a California girl, especially when she's wearing more-subdued makeup. But with this more dramatic face, does it work as well? She looks a lot like Michelle Williams and Chloë Sevigny here - not a coincidence, I'm thinking, since Mischa has been leaning toward indie fare these days. What do you think of this look?
