Fragrance Review: Chloé

The much-hyped Chloé fragrance has been on my radar for some time now, but I hadn't gotten a chance to give it a sniff until today. While I don't loathe it like The Moment does, I'm underwhelmed.

It had great potential, being the brainchild of a fashion house known for its ethereal creations. Michel Almairac, creator of Gucci Rush, developed this scent, so I hoped for something similarly complex and pleasing. Unfortunately, Chloé lacks the nuance I'd expect for its high price tag. Instead, it smells overwhelmingly like musky rose. There are some notes of spiciness in there, but nothing mind-blowingly unique.

Plus, I can't shake the feeling that I've smelled this somewhere before. I was having a sniff when Katie Sugar's babysitter walked by and said, "Whoa, something smells like B.O." I think she was talking about Taco Thursday at Sugar HQ, but her remark suddenly helped me identify the mental association I had with the fragrance. Chloé reminds me of sitting too close to a sweet little old lady who hasn't showered, but who's instead doused herself in copious amounts of perfume. The fragrance itself is not unpleasant at all, but I have the sneaking suspicion it's covering up something that is.

You may have remembered the earlier perfume by Chloé called Chloé, but the company joined forces with Michel Almairac (the creator of Farenheit for Dior, Gucci Rush and Kiton) to create a new version of the discontinued fragrance. The redesigned bottle has similar lines to the hugely successful Heloise bag.

The floral scent has a rose base, with notes of peony, lychee, freesia, magnolia, and lily of the valley. Amber and cedar wood might temper those florals, but that's a lot of competing floral scents. An early review gives Chloé a big thumbs down, describing it as an "an uninteresting, clichéd floral that smells like a perfume masquerading as a fabric softener." Yikes.

You can smell for yourself in February, when Chloé ($110) lands in Saks Fifth Avenue. I'm interested in smelling this solely because I like the bags, shoes and clothes-so I'm hoping it's not as awful as it sounds. Are you excited about Chloé? (And Harry Potter fans, check out who's in the ads!)

Kate Bosworth and Michael Polish held hands and posed for photos at a party hosted by Calvin Klein in Seoul last night. Kate mingled with Calvin Klein creative director Francisco Costa and chatted with fellow actress Chloe Moretz when she wasn't sharing kisses with her date. South Korea is the latest loved-up stop for Kate and Michael. The pair visited NYC earlier this month for the Met Gala, where Kate modeled a fringed Prada minidress.

Fresh off an extensive press tour for Dark Shadows, Chloe Moretz also made the trek to Asia for the fashionable party. Chloe's currently on a break from film, but she's gearing up to start production on a remake of Steven King's Carrie. Fans of the original have voiced concerns over a Carrie reboot, though with Julianne Moore signed on to play Carrie's mother, it's shaping up to be a talented cast.

I thought long and hard before posting this find, that's how good it is. These classic Chloé leather sandals look like something handcrafted by a cobbler in Spain, and they look like something that would take you effortlessly from a little white sundress on a Saturday visit to the farmers market to a vacation in Greece with no problems. They're the kind of luxury sandal that's so simple, and five years from now, you'll be proudly wearing them as soon as the weather gets warm. The Dictator: Ruled by Tasteless but Funny Jokes

Full disclosure: I laughed out loud many times during The Dictator, knowing full well that I should have been offended instead. But what you see is what you get when it comes to Sacha Baron Cohen, and after movies like Bruno and Borat, you already know whether you'll be able to find humor in film about a horrifyingly ignorant world leader who's as naive, racist, and prejudiced as they come.

I know that sounds hard to swallow, but there is a big difference between The Dictator and Cohen's previous work: this time, it doesn't even feel remotely real. Whereas Borat and Bruno are made to taunt and embarrass what appear to be unsuspecting, everyday people, there's no mistaking The Dictator for what it is: a total farce that comes complete with actors you've seen before. It may sound obvious, but having Cohen's Aladeen interact with the likes of Ben Kingsley, Anna Faris, and John C. Reilly makes the whole story easier to digest - and much easier to laugh at in spite of yourself.

At the core, The Dictator is really a fish-out-of water comedy, just taken to staggeringly inappropriate levels. Aladeen has ruled his North African country, Wadiya, since he was a small child, and in many ways, he's never grown up. While he's busy ordering execution for anyone that rubs him the wrong way (including the engineer that couldn't make his nuclear weapon pointy enough), his uncle Tamir (Kingsley) is the one that's really making the decisions about how the country should be run. Predictably, Tamir turns on Aladeen and seizes power during a trip to NYC, leaving Aladeen lost, penniless, and unrecognizable on the streets of the Big Apple.

The Dictator then turns into a bizarre romantic comedy, as Aladeen befriends a crunchy protester named Chloe (Anna Faris), who he initially mistakes for a boy. Chloe gives Aladeen his first job in her organic whole foods store, which opens a Pandora's box of jokes about the irony of a world leader wearing a hairnet. Meanwhile, Aladeen hatches a plan to bring down his uncle, and somewhere along the way, you start rooting for the same guy that suggests aborting a baby because it's not a boy.

I'm not saying that The Dictator is sophisticated by any means, or even groundbreaking as a comedy. Cohen spares us no expense of crude humor that pushes the envelope (and literally takes us inside a woman's birth canal), and if you're not a fan for Cohen's brand of humor, you'll probably walk out of the theater before you even get there. But if you've ever found his antics to be funny before, chances are you will again - even if you're slightly embarrassed to admit it when the credits roll.

Johnny Depp Brings Dark Shadows to London

Johnny Depp joined his Dark Shadows director Tim Burton and costars including Helena Bonham Carter, Chloe Moretz, and Eva Green in London this evening. The group first premiered their new film Monday in LA, where Johnny also fit in a quick taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live! yesterday afternoon. Johnny talked about several of his famous friends during his chat with Jimmy and even took questions from some of his many impersonators. Dark Shadows, in which Johnny plays a vampire from the 1700s trying to adapt to life in the 1970s, is his eighth collaboration with Tim Burton. Early reviews of Dark Shadows and its off-kilter mix of horror and comedy have been lukewarm, but audiences will have a chance to decide for themselves when it hits US theaters on Friday.

Johnny Depp brought his latest layered up look to a press conference for Dark Shadows at the Prince Park Tower in Tokyo yesterday. He promoted the project in Japan all weekend including at a screening with director Tim Burton on Saturday. Last week Johnny met up with costars Chloe Moretz, Eva Green, and Helena Bonham Carter to premiere the movie in London ahead of its release date Friday. Dark Shadows came in second at the box office, following behind The Avengers, which took the top spot for the second consecutive weekend.
