The Met's Costume Institute Gala: The Models

Last night's theme at the 2009 Costume Institute Gala was "The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion," an exploration of how models have inspired and projected fashions throughout recent years. Of course, my coverage of this event would not be complete without a gallery of models who walked the red carpet. (Here's why some big names didn't show up). Confession: I used to work out to Cindy Crawford's fitness tape, Shape Your Body, a lot in the '90s. Cheesy? Yes, but no one could argue that her body wasn't, and still isn't, enviable. But while I was busy working my abs, I'd forget how truly gorgeous this girl is (physical exertion, apparently, makes me stupid). So tonight, I'm reminded just how lovely this corn-fed girl from De Kalb, IL is. Her makeup amplifies the obvious as she plays up her eyes with a dark blue hue that matches her dress, and keeps the rest of the look tonal with her pink pout and nude blush. Her long curls frame her structured face. What say you, are you loving Cindy's look?

Which 40+ Model Looks The Best?

Last weekend at Hampton Social @ Ross concert series we saw Christie Brinkley and Brooke Shields on the scene looking smiley. And back in June, we saw Cindy Crawford at the opening of the Sydney Omega Boutique.

I guess this is a little unfair, considering that Christie Brinkley is over 50, and I'll admit this is a bit of a shallow poll-but still, out of these three model moms, who do you think is aging the most gracefully?

Does "Supermodel" Mean Anything Anymore?

We all know the supermodels by their first names: Naomi. Linda. Christy. Heidi. Gisele. Whitney.

Wait, Whitney? Yep, Whitney Thompson - as in the winner of America's Next Top Model. She's launching her own line of handmade jewelry and candles, calling it Supermodel. "I've tried to make my collection real," she told First Coast News. "It's stuff that I love and I would wear and I'm a supermodel so I was thinking, 'Hey! Supermodel.'"

While I love Top Model and hope that Whitney's endeavor goes well, none of the show's winners are exactly household names in the way that Cindy Crawford is. Then again, neither are the most popular runway models - just try asking a random dude who Jessica Stam or Raquel Zimmerman are. So maybe Claudia Schiffer is right when she says that the age of the supermodel is long over. If it is, do you think it matters?

Every day we're confronted with images of celebrities who've had their teeth capped, veneered, zoom whitened, Invisaligned, and any number of other surgical and chemical processes - smiles that no real person has and that run into the thousands of dollars to create. Which is why it's refreshing when a little bit of naturalness peeps through. There's no case where this is more true than with gap teeth, which, prior to our symmetry and straightness-obsessed age, were a sign of seductive prowess (anybody remember the Wife of Bath in the Canterbury Tales? In Merry Olde England, gap teeth were quite the hot thing- kinda like Marilyn Monroe and Cindy Crawford's moles). And despite the prevailing culture, the ladies I've put together still look sexy as hell, no dentist required. So c'mon, get gappy and check these famous spaces out.
