Beauty Byte: Kate Moss Kicks Off Her Fragrance

Kate Moss really is everywhere lately, jetting from the Topshop offices in London earlier this week to a hip soiree in Morocco yesterday. According to Women's Wear Daily, supermodel Moss was in Marrakesh to celebrate her fragrance, called Kate, which we first heard about in December. The signature scent hits the European and Asian markets in September. The scent will roll out in U.S. stores in 2008.

WWD spoke with Bernd Beetz, CEO of Coty, the license holder for the fragrance. (Is it just me, or does Coty handle pretty much every celebrity scent?) According to the story:

The beauty giant aims to capitalize on the wide-ranging appeal that has kept Moss the toast of the fashion set and a household name for two decades.

“[We will] tap into consumer groups that we haven’t tapped into before,” said Bernd Beetz, chief executive officer of Coty, who added the company is building its portfolio on fashion-, designer- and celebrity-oriented pillars. “[Moss] overlaps fashion and celebrity.”

Classified as a floral musk and clad in pink-and-black packaging, Kate will cost about $27 to $60, depending on the size. Not surprisingly, Moss herself will appear in the ads for the product. Will you buy the eau de Kate?

Oh Man: "Lost" Star Josh Holloway Is Cool (Water)

A few weeks ago, I told you about a new women's fragrance called Davidoff Cool Water Wave, which features beach-sports babe Gabrielle Reece in its ads. Now, perfume maker Coty Inc. has found an equally hot dude as the new face of its men's fragrance.

According to Women's Wear Daily, "Lost" star Josh Holloway will star in ads for Davidoff Cool Water worldwide - except in North America, where Reece's husband, surfer Laird Hamilton, is the brand's main model. Holloway's campaign, including print ads and TV spots, will begin rolling out this summer.

Holloway, who plays the character of Sawyer, lives in Hawaii, where "Lost" is filmed and where the Cool Water campaign was shot.

The actor told WWD he recently starting wearing Cool Water again after not using it for several years:

“My wife’s got a crush on me again,” he said, smiling. Holloway added he’d be open to working on his own line of products, if the opportunity arose.

“But it would probably not be as elegant as Cool Water,” he joked. “It’d be more like Man Juice.”

I could make an inappropriate comment here, but I won't. Instead, I'll just say that whatever fragrance Holloway is selling, I'll enjoy looking at the ads.

Beyoncé Gets Her Own Fragrance - Think Kanye's Excited?

WWD is reporting that next Spring, we'll all be able to smell like Beyoncé because the pop star just signed a deal with Coty for her own fragrance. "For me," Beyoncé said about the new scent, "fragrance reflects a woman’s attitude and unique sense of style. While I love various perfumes, I haven’t found a scent that truly personifies me as a woman. Working with Coty, I was able to turn my ideal fragrance into a reality by creating an alluring and sophisticated fragrance, one that’s reflective of my inner power." No word yet on what the notes of that inner power might be, but if they're anything like most other celebrity fragrances, the scent will be sweet and floral. Then again, Beyoncé's got a fierce sense of doing things the right way (bringing Taylor Swift onstage to finish her speech, for example), so this scent may very well be as unique and eclectic as her music. Celebrity fragrance sales are down, but will you be on the hunt for this one come next year anyway?

Halle Berry Joins the Celeb-Scent League

Seems like a new celebrity fragrance is launched each week, doesn't it? The latest A-lister to join the fragrant bunch is Halle Berry. WWD reports that the Oscar winner has inked a deal with Coty to launch her own scent early next year.

"She adds another dimension to the celebrity fragrance market," said Steve Mormoris, senior vice president of global marketing at Coty. "Halle has always been a little more mysterious, not quite as open with her personal life as some other stars. Her fragrances will allow her to present another facet of her personality to her fans."

What's surprising is that Halle's fragrances are starting out at what Coty calls "mid-tier" stores such as J.C. Penney. (I would have pegged her as more of a Nordstrom girl.) Think you'll have a little Halle, or are you over the celebrity fragrance trend?

How-To: Apply a Red Lipstick

Applying a red lipstick can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. Now that I've provided tips from choosing your undertone, to picking a cool red, a warm red, and a true red, you're good to go. But wait - there's more:

Prep - Get the lips ready to hold the bold shade with a light sweep of foundation or a lip primer such as Smashbox Lid & Lip Primer ($24). Set with a dusting of translucent powder. Coty AirSpun Loose Face Powder in Translucent ($6.99) should do the trick.
Line up - Using a lip liner in a shade or two closest to your natural lip color, line and fill in your entire lips. You can also work with a red liner if you can find an exact match to your lipstick. Never use a darker color. It can look très tacky.
Apply - You can always do it the old fashioned straight-from-the-tube way, but I like using a lip brush for more control. Start at the center of your lips, and work outwards.
Blot and re-apply - For a surefire way to lock in the color, blot with a tissue and apply your chosen red once more.
Finishing touches - Make a little smudge? Clean it up with a Q-Tip and some concealer. Want some extra shine? Layer a red gloss like NP Set Lip Gloss in St. John Red ($15) or a sparkly clear one such as Bare Escentuals Buxom Lips in Dominique ($18).

Oh Man: Tim McGraw to Launch a Fragrance

What's Tim singin' about here? Could it be a song called "Don't Steal My Ring, Crazy Fan" or "My Faith Has Been (Re)Touched"? Maybe. But my guess is that Tim's whistling a happy tune now that he's inked a fragrance deal with Coty. There aren't many details yet, but there is the obligatory PR statement from Tim:

"Creating my own fragrance is an exciting new endeavor for me. Coty has a great creative and marketing team, one of the best in the industry, and I'm looking forward to working with them."

The as-yet-unnamed men's scent will be out next summer. I'm sure it will sell like crazy, but I can't help but wonder if Faith is waiting for her own deal...

Coming Soon: Deseo by Jennifer Lopez

Hola, amigas. There's some exciting news from Jennifer Lopez. She's just announced that she's expecting... to launch her next fragrance, Deseo, in February 2008. Unlike her earlier scents, Deseo directly honors Lopez's Latina heritage, which I think is cool. In an interview with Women's Wear Daily, she said:

On building on her Latina roots:"I have a lot of synergy happening in my life right now that is taking me back to my roots and to everything that I'm about and how I was raised. This is what I really find my heart is into. It's the first time I have decided to use a Spanish word for one of our fragrances. We really look at where I am at in my life and what is important to me at that time. But the one thing that we have always concentrated on from the beginning is to be as truthful as we can."

On how the celebrity fragrance biz has changed:"The celebrity fragrance category is huge now and it's very competitive - it has changed a lot [since my entry into it]. I really had no clue what to expect when I created my first fragrance, but like every other artistic endeavor I do, I just listened to my gut and made sure that I expressed myself completely. I was lucky that I found the right partner with Coty - who encouraged my creativity and really brought my vision to life."
On creating Deseo:"The idea for the scent usually comes first. I always call up and say, I love this or I love that - get this candle or this flower that was in my garden. With Deseo, the inspiration came from a combination of smells in my own garden. So, I called up my friends at Coty and asked them to come take a walk through my garden with me so they could experience it. It was late at night so there was kind of a dew in the air and I took them to an area where there are these beautiful geranium flowers, orange trees, lemon trees, and all this stuff mixing together that was making this beautiful smell."

It doesn't surprise me that Jennifer is so involved in finding the right scents, since she seems... particular about what she'll wear. The fragrance will be out in February, right in time for Valentine's Day. But fans who have attended her tour with hubby Marc Anthony have already received a sneak sniff-because samples have been handed out at each stop. In an age of boob jabs and moms saving for cosmetic surgery for their daughters, it's hard to believe that only a few decades ago, our ideals of beauty were so different. The '30s were a simpler time, and because of the Great Depression, makeup truly was a luxury for most Americans. That's why you'll see, among ads for Coty perfume and Bourjois lipstick, a few hard pitches for now-essential items such as toothpaste.
