Cover Girl LashBlast is one of the most popular mascaras on the market, and it's definitely one of Team Bella's favorites. That's why I think it's cool that Wired broke down all the ingredients in the LashBlast Luxe ($8) formula and explained them in layman's terms.

We rarely think about beauty products on the chemical level, even though we're generally very picky about formulations, so it's nice to see an in-depth look at why and how something like mascara works. The piece dispels the old "bat poop in mascara" myth by explaining that guanine (not to be confused with guano) used to be a key ingredient in most mascaras. It also highlights the magnetic molecules used to get your mascara to adhere to your lashes and keep it from separating in the tube. And one more fun fact: you also shouldn't wear mascara if you're having an MRI, because there's so much iron oxide in the stuff that it throws off the imaging apparatus.

Yesterday I tried out Cover Girl LiquiLine Blast ($8) in Blue Boom, a metallic royal blue dreamed up by makeup guru Pat McGrath. I applied it close to the lash line, then gently smudged it upward to create the illusion of a smoky eye. Many compliments were had. So the idea that blue eyeliner has to look totally '80s? We're not gonna take it anymore.

Looking for a fresh makeup palette? Take a cue from Rashida Jones, then, who wore this unexpected purple and green smoky eye makeup combo to the 2010 MTV Movie Awards afterparty last night. Using CoverGirl products, makeup artist Molly R. Stern created the fresh-faced look. "Rashida's dress was simple and black," she said. "So we wanted to play up her makeup with a bit of color."

To re-create this colorfully smoky eye, use Smoky ShadowBlast in Citrus Flair ($8) on the lids. Next, add definition with Exact Eyelights Eye Shadow ($8) palette for brown eyes. Stern then lined Rashida's eyes with the new LiquiLine Blast in Violet Voltage and then applied LiquiLine Blast in Green Glow in the inner corners for an extra glow. Finish it all off with a sweep of Outlast Lipstain in Flirty Nude ($8) on the lips, followed by ShineBlast Lip Gloss in Smoulder ($8.50) for shine.

The Best-Loved Makeup Brand Might Surprise You

If you're a huge fan of LashBlast mascara, this shouldn't surprise you: In a poll of 5,000 women, Cover Girl came out on top, with 14 percent of women reporting it their favorite brand. The women polled said they preferred Cover Girl mainly because it was a good value, and they trust the name. Clinique came in a close second at 10 percent, followed, interestingly, by Mary Kay and Maybelline.

What was most interesting about the study, though, is that it found women who wear very little makeup are more brand loyal than beauty junkies. Basically, if you love makeup, instead of becoming addicted to one brand, you're more likely to find something you like in any line. But if you consider yourself a makeup "minimalist" or "everyday woman," you'll probably buy a disproportionate amount of your makeup from the same brand. What's your reaction to this study? Do you think it pretty accurately describes your buying habits and favorite brands, or is it way off base?
