Trend Alert: Turquoise Nail Polish

Among the many qualities that make Whitney Port (of The Hills) so lovely is that she has her own style. I've always thought of Whit as someone who sets trends as opposed to following them. So when I spotted this style star sporting shiny turquoise nail polish, I was excited.

For anyone who's willing to try out a wild new water-colored varnish, get ready for the next big nail trend. You can always go back to my China Glaze review, and here are two more aqua nail polishes.

Nic's Sticks by OPI in Baby Go Bye-Bye ($6.99) is a vibrant turquoise color. This relatively new and easy-to-use nail polish pen is great if you are looking for a quick color fix. I haven't tried them, but there are 30 colors and from what I understand, the only drawback is that they are a little runnier than the original OPI formula. The advantage: the polish dries in just one minute.

Attention all neon lovers: Creative Nail Design in Hot Pop Blue ($10) is a bright aqua nail lacquer for you. Trend Alert: Metallic, Bejeweled Nails

Katy Perry isn't the only celebrity hopping on the sparkly, encrusted nail bandwagon. Beyonce had similarly wild nails with heart-shaped jewels on them last night at the MTV Europe Awards, and Kristen Bell was sporting iridescent foiled nails recently, too. Do you ever walk into a drugstore and wonder what the cosmetic trends of the moment are, whether it's a hairstyle or nail polish shade? It is, after all, so easy to get lost in the sea of displays. Spring is the perfect time to get experimenting, particularly with all of the weddings, outdoor events, and warmer weather ahead.

Plus, trends are a fun way to express your wilder and/or in-the-know sides, but because they're not always everyday appropriate, you might consider finding a more cost effective alternative for sporting your style. Well, I've got you covered. Here are some of my tips for identifying trends on the cheap when you read more.

At the department store: If you don't have time to make a visit to the mall or your favorite department store, check out their websites for high-end inspiration. Check out Pantone: When it comes to predicting color trends, Pantone leads the way. While they focus on predictions for fashion and the home, many of their featured colors also trickle down to makeup and nail polish shades and even hair accessories. If you're looking for the hottest shades right now, check them out here.
Other Sugar sites: When it comes to the latest fashions and colors, celebrities often get first pick at collections, and have easy access to the top stylists. In this case, it's always great to check out Pop and Fab for some beauty brainstorming.

The Unsung Heroes of Fashion Week

Nail technicians, despite their increasing Fashion Week importance due to the increased interest in bags and shoes, are usually relegated to performing their jobs while the models get their hair and makeup done. But changing polish eight times a day can be a nightmare for both models and pros. Exhibit A: On the left is a photo of model Coco Rocha showing me her manicure from the Thakoon show. Problem is, we were at Matthew Williamson. Today's New York Times has an interesting story where the writer, Natasha Singer, goes undercover with Creative Nail Design as a nail technician during New York Fashion Week. Give it a read, but be prepared to witness possibly the most unglamorous aspects of Fashion Week!

Beauty Mark It! Brilliant Base Coats

If you enjoy frequent pedicures and manicures, you already know the value of a good base coat. Base coats are an essential part of any nail treatment; they protect nails from yellowing, they make polish last longer, and they help fill in ridges on nail beds. I've been using Stickey ($7)from Creative Nail Designs, which is great. However, the bottle is almost empty, so I'm open to trying a new base coat.
