Halloween How-To: David Bowie

If you're in the mood for a truly rock-and-roll costume, people don't come much cooler than David Bowie. The androgynous, glam-rock look of his Aladdin Sane years takes a bit of energy to pull off, but it's worth the effort. MAC senior makeup artist Louise Zizzo, who did the Jem makeup tutorial, shows us how to get this space-rocker look.

Brows: Louise used glue stick to tame the eyebrows and to prepare them to be covered with concealer.
Face: Contour the face with powder blush in Raizin or Fleur Power. Use a fluffy brush to give skin an airbrushed effect.
Design: Sketch the design with a light brow pencil. Louise used Chromacake to fill in the red and blue, but you can get a similar look with other products. Try the red part of Danger Zone eye shadow or red lipstick (just blot loose powder on top to set the color). For the blue portion of the face, Freshwater eye shadow should work. Using an angled brush like the excellent 266 brush, define the line with Fluidline in Blacktrack.
Lips: Use fingers to dab red lipstick on the lips, focusing in the middle portion. The idea is to add a hint of color without covering the lips entirely.

Would You Embrace the Browless Trend?

Forget low-brow beauty. No-brow beauty could be the next big thing. Barely-there eyebrows are a reemerging trend. "Think of those looming images of Queen Elizabeth," noted makeup artist Pat McGrath told the New York Times.

McGrath, who was responsible for the no-brow look at the latest Balenciaga show and the light on the brows look at Prada, noted that perhaps it has something to do with the current financial state of the world. "The economic troubles we are facing now open people up to be more daring and willing to don cutting-edge looks," she explained.

Even the latest Givenchy print ad features the look, and it appears to be trickling down to the mainstream. "It’s unifying," fashion consultant Lauren Boyle told the newspaper. "There is an asexual element to no eyebrows. . . It’s an exercise in modernity." I can't help but be reminded of David Bowie's Aladdin Sane years and, of course, '90s model Kristen McMenamy. What about you? Would you go for the browless look, or do you prefer to keep yours just the way they are?

Do You Agree With Madonna's "Ageist" Comments?

Madonna appeared on Nightline last night to talk about her new album and documentary, I Am Because We Are. I was sad to hear her say that she likes her thighs now because they "aren't as chubby" as they used to be, but I did like what she had to say about the double standard that aging women face:

I don't think we live in just a sexist society, we live in an ageist society, connected to women. I think women in an unconscious way are valued for their youth, youthful beauty, not so much for their wisdom and experience. Hopefully, we're going to change all that.

Madonna went on to point out that people are hyping her upcoming 50th birthday, but that the same fuss isn't made over older male rock stars such as David Bowie and Mick Jagger. I think she has a point. Do you?

Love It or Hate It? Iman's Costume Institute Gala Look

We already know that Iman doesn't look her age, but I'd love to know more about her makeup. Since she has her own cosmetics line, I'm assuming that's what was used to give her such a deep, dramatic eye shadow look. I'm not sure what to think about the flipped-up bangs - your thoughts? - but come on, it's Iman. Mrs. David Bowie! I want to be her when I grow up.

Love It or Hate It? Hilary Duff's Costume Institute Gala Look

Hilary Duff has been growing on me lately; she comes off as cute and fun-loving. This look, however, has too much going on. Streaky highlighted hair, frosty eye shadow, too much bronzer - it's as though David Bowie's Labyrinth character was listening to early Britney while working on Hil's hair and makeup... and then sent her back in time for a prom in 1983. Hilary's a beautiful girl when she looks simple; I think this misstep proves that less is more.

Beauty Byte: Pete Wentz to Launch Makeup Line

Who would have thought that emo heartthrob Pete Wentz would become such a beauty-industry mogul? He's already announced his plan to open a salon in Chicago, and now the king of guyliner is branching out into cosmetics. He's about to launch a collection of five vegan, punk-themed pencil eyeliners called WentzPentz. Pete said:

"Fall Out Boy has always been known for its pop hooks and good looks, and like David Bowie before me, I am known for my displays of cosmetic derring-do. For too long, I've been keeping my eyeliner know-how to myself. Now, with the debut of WentzPentz, guys - and girls - everywhere will be able to have a piece of the Fall Out Boy lifestyle."

Sold individually, WentzPentz eyeliners will retail for $3.99 each at Hot Topic. They'll be available in five shades, each inspired by Pete's childhood in the Chicago area:

I vote for D. Joking aside, what do you think of the look she sported last night? Giggle isn't crazy about her hair color here, but I think she looks amazing. What say you?
