Scent of a Woman: Diane von Furstenberg Returns

According to today's WWD, the ever-fabulous Diane von Furstenberg is working on a new beauty line and concept fragrance. Joining her in the endeavor is Chantal Roos, the former president of YSL Beauté. I loved the latest DvF lipstick, and am waiting with bated breath to see what the two create for “the modern archetype of the 360-degree woman” (as Roos calls DvF in the article).

You may remember Diane von Furstenberg Beauty from 2003, when the designer launched makeup, brushes, palettes, and a scent called D. Or true DvF fans might even remember the cosmetic line and fragrance - Tatiana, named for her daughter - she launched in the 70s. She has since released one lipstick every season, and thankfully has realized it's not enough.

It's Sexy Sixties Style at Diane von Furstenberg

Think runway makeup is all about expensive brands? Think again. At the Diane von Furstenberg show, lead makeup artist Gucci Westman used Revlon on top models like Jessica Stam and Coco Rocha. Westman has recently been named Global Artistic Director for the brand, and I've gotta say, she's already making me think differently about drugstore makeup.

Case in point: this '60s-inspired Veruschka-on-a-safari look. Models wore khaki tones punched up with a shot of bold color - in this case, a flash of yellow on shimmering black eyes. (For day-to-day wear, leave the yellow aside and instead use matte eye shadow; Westman used Revlon matte eye shadow in Rich Sable, Peach Sorbet, and Vintage Lace.) The mod lip color isn't lipstick; it's the Peach Sorbet eye shadow mixed with white Matte Lux eyeliner.

So will we see a Gucci Westman makeup collection from Revlon anytime soon? "Eventually," Westman said, adding that she's already giving input on products being made now. "Everybody is excited to bring back that iconic woman - like the Charlie girl, but a modern take on that." For now, though, I'm off to figure out how to make this whole eye-products-on-the-lips thing work off the runway.

Even if you’re not typically a coral kind of gal, trust me when I say that you’ll love the way they look with a little bit of mascara and some bronzer in the summertime. Coral has that je ne sais quoi to make tanned skin look all the more radiant. Below are my favorite coral lipsticks, They are a little deeper than peach lipgloss without being overly orange. Do you prefer one lipstick color over another in certain seasons?

Stila Lip Color in Miranda ($17) is a shiny, creamy and super-sheer everyday coral lipstick. Last year, it was so popular that it was honored as one of In Style's Best of Beauty Buys. It's a good choice if you want to ease into the color trend.
Chantecaille Lip Chic in Geranium ($30) is a sheer, rich nudey-coral. This creamy formula stays moist for hours and looks great worn alone or with a sheer gloss on top.
I've already told you how gorgeous the new, creamy Diane Von Furstenberg Volcano Lipstick ($18) is. This golden, pale coral-peach shade looks killer paired with black mascara and bronzer.
Guerlain KissKiss Stick Gloss in Mango Fizz ($30) is a sheer and shiny hydrating lipstick that contains just a little bit of maxi-lip for plumpness without having too much of a tingle.

Although Diane Von Furstenberg has discontinued her makeup line (let's all take a moment to mourn the loss of her awesome pink glosses), she can't let her love of makeup fade. So, each season she has decided to release one signature lipstick to complement her collection. Summer's choice will appeal to girls who were born to love volcanoes.

Volcano ($18) is an explosive shade of shimmery, pale coral. The texture is creamy and the color could also be categorized as a peachy-nude that enhances your natural lip. It is intended for all skin tones and looks great with strong brown and flushed cheeks.

The inspiration for her Summer 2008 collection and lipstick came from the lush and bright flowers that landscape the countryside of Bali. Beauty Spring Peek: Matte Fuchsia Lips

The Spring 2007 Diane Von Furstenberg Show was called "All About Eve," as in the first woman. It was meant to look simple, sophisticated and seductive. You can see this reflection not only in her clothes but in her makeup choices as well. She mixed a polished, yet clean and natural, fresh face with a pop of bright fuchsia, matte color on the lips.

Beauty How To: Create Fabulous Cheek Contours

If only we could all be born with naturally high and defined cheek bones. Most of us, however, need a little help to get the perfect contour and shape. Here's how to create this Hollywood-worthy look in three easy steps.

First, apply a foundation that's one or two shades darker than your skin tone to the area of your cheeks that hollows out when you pucker up. Blend well, so that there's no line. I recommend MAC Cosmetics Hooked Bronzing Powder, $19.50.
Next, use a peachy apricot or a brown-based blush on the apples of your cheeks and be sure to blend well. I really like Nars Blush, $25, in Gina for medium skin tones or Orgasm for fairer skin.
Lastly, shine and define. Use a light golden or shimmery yellowish powder on the area right above your cheekbones. One swipe with the brush should be enough for a glowing accent. I recommend Diane Von Furstenberg Eclipse Highlighting Powder in Sunshine, $30.

Are You Tired of Stinky Stores?

The other day, after it was revealed that Abercrombie & Fitch spent more than $3 million on pumping one of their colognes, Fierce, through their stores, many of you wrote in to say how little you loved the scent being wafted through A&F. And now, the New York Post is reporting that a new NYC Hollister store at the corner of Houston and Broadway is being protested by people made miserable by fragrance being pumped from the store out onto the street. A similar situation occurred with a Diane Von Furstenberg store last July, and it seems that instances of people getting angry about, and sick from, the overuse of scent machines just keep getting more frequent. Do you think these are isolated instances of overproduction in the smell department, or are these scent machines generally a problem? And how bad would it have to be for you to protest one of these stinky stores?
