For today's reader review, we're going back to the basics. You can't get more old-school than with Dove soap. Here's what reader Mizz_Jennii had to say about her facial cleanser of choice, Dove Sensitive Skin Beauty Bars ($4):

I keep a bar of this soap by the sink. It washes off makeup like a charm without drying out my skin. I hate using regular makeup remover with the cotton pads - it's messy and I always end up with tiny cotton fibers in my eyes. No fun! I use this soap instead. It does not irritate my delicate eye area at all. Best of all, it's cheap and lasts super-long.

Would You Get a $75 Facial From Dove?

Dove, a longtime drugstore favorite, is now joining the upscale beauty ranks by opening the first North American Dove Spa in Canada in a few weeks. (They're already open in England). Continuing on with its "Real Beauty" campaign, the company plans to open upward of 50 locations within the next five years.

The spas will feature Dove Spa Professional products, and offer customizable services including facials ($75 to $110), a variety of body treatments ($50 to $130), mani/pedis ($30 to $65), and waxing ($15 to $85). But will it fly, especially when another spa chain offers high-end products for about half the price?

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for pampering oneself. But I'm having a hard time grasping why so many companies are going upscale in these rough economic times. ($35 foundation at Target, anyone?) If you're going to shell out $30 for a manicure, why not just go to Bliss, where for $5 less you get brownies, cheese, and the fancy feeling of being at Bliss? Dove would really have to create an astounding spa for me to pay that much for a variation on a drugstore brand. Do you think this is a smart plan? Are you feeling the love for Dove?

Back to Basics: The Best Bar Soaps

Despite the plethora of body washes and fancy-scented soaps that I have in my bathroom cabinet, there's just something about old-school bar soaps that's appealing. Although they can be a bit drying on my face (I know, heaven forbid my face actually touches a bar soap), they make my body feel fresh and clean. Also, call me a sap, but they remind me of my parents' house where I grew up. Below are three of my favorite no-frills body bars that have a long-standing great reputation. What's your favorite bar soap?

Dove Beauty Bar ($1.49) lathers easily and has a refreshing scent, but what I love most is that it washes away completely and leaves my skin feeling smooth without leaving behind any of that oily after-effect. Also, the price really can't be beat - and it gets even lower per bar if you buy it in bulk.

Zum Bar Rosemary Goat's Milk Soap ($5.30) has an amazing and invigorating herbal, spa-like essence. It is made from all-natural ingredients and is super gentle on my skin. It cleanses deep within my pores and never ever makes me feel dry and crackly.

Ivory soap (3 bars for $1.39) is a classic of its own kind. It's inexpensive, it smells great, and it brings me back full-circle to my childhood. In fact, to this day my mom still showers with Ivory. Unfortunately, this is one product that doesn't bode well on my face (it's just a tad too drying), but my body always responds well. It's never caused any irritations or blotchiness in all these years!

Does Retouching Ruin Dove's Message?

This week's issue of the New Yorker has a great story about Pascal Dangin, one of the world's foremost digital retouchers. One of the interesting tidbits: the Dove "real beauty" campaign that featured regular women was heavily retouched by Dangin. While I'm not shocked - the women's skin looked suspiciously perfect in the ads - it's nonetheless a little bit depressing. Do you think the accept-yourself message still works, or is it less powerful to you now?

Ever since Dove branched out from its old-school White Beauty Bar, I've been really impressed by the brand's hair and skincare offerings. Its shampoos, conditioners, and body washes are both gentle and gentle on the pocketbook.

I have a weakness for cucumber scents, and I'm always on the lookout for a good translucent deodorant to wear with sleeveless tops. In both these regards, Dove succeeds. I thought cucumber in a deodorant might be weird, but it's actually a very unobtrusive scent that simply smells clean, unlike fragrances like baby powder, which can be overpowering.

The stick goes on to my skin almost entirely clear, and unlike some other transparent deodorants, it has no sticky texture. But this best thing about Dove Ultimate Clear is its anti-sweat protection. You know how with some deodorants, you want to reapply between daytime and night? Never with this stuff. Even at the gym, when the rest of me is sweaty, this stuff keeps my underarms dry. I'd also recommend it for people with sensitive skin, as I've never had any problems with irritation. If you've tried it, tell me what you think.

When I became old enough to wash my own face before bed, my mom introduced me to the Dove Beauty Bar. She told me it was the only thing I would ever need to wash my face. Well, I grew up and got sucked in to the fancy face wash products at cosmetic counters, but if I am ever in a pinch, I know I can always run to the drugstore and pick up a bar of Dove.

The Dove Beauty Bar is not soap. In fact, its tagline for years has been "Dove doesn't dry your skin like soap". It's made of 1/4 moisturizing lotion and is recommended by dermatologists and pediatricians. We also like Dove for their great ad campaigns that make us feel good about being "normal" women.
