When I was a teenager, I was a loner, Dottie. A rebel. And like any self-styled outsider, I dyed my hair. Only through the world of Manic Panic could I possibly express my teen angst! Fast-forward to now, and while I love colorful hair - pink, purple, whatever - I stick to variations of my natural shade.

It's hard to believe that Fight Club hit movie screens 10 years ago, but, well, time flies. In a tribute to one of the grossest parts of the plot, Etsy seller SerendipityEight is offering soaps inspired by the movie. Available in Bay Rum and Cool Water scents, they're a convincing knockoff of the soap that Brad Pitt holds on the movie poster. Fortunately, the homage goes only so far; this soap is made with shea butter and glycerin, not human fat. Get yours for $5 if you're so inclined - but move fast, before the copyright cops jump into the ring.

The Hood Offers Creative Rain Protection

While Curly Bella shared her hilarious - to us now, not to her then - tale of creating a makeshift rain bonnet out of a plastic shopping bag post-blowout (like this woman), it's not a look she wants to do over. If you're really concerned about the best protection from drips and drops, umbrellas often fall short when the rain heads straight for your face.

Now entering: The Hood. For flash showers, these hats are considerably more creative than the plastic drugstore cap. Created by Philly-based designer Taryn Zychal, they're made of the same upcycled umbrella fabric and handpicked lining as her doggie jackets. Hands-free but hair-safe, I'm still on the fence on whether this would work for my own head. They'll be available on the Recycling Zychal Etsy Shop starting Monday; will you check them out?

A Beauty Tip For the Germophobic

A self-professed beauty nerd friend of mine and I were discussing-what else?-lip gloss, and she mentioned her favorite is MAC Tendertone Lip Balm. "I'm kind of a germaphobe, so I don't like lip gloss that comes in pots, because you have to stick your dirty fingers in them. But I love Tendertone so much that I stick it in my microwave for a minute and a half and pour it into a doe-foot tube," she divulged.

A doe-foot tube, for those of you who don't have a degree in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing (OK, maybe she's a certified beauty nerd), is the container that wand lip gloss comes in, the "doe" part referring to the applicator tip. Another piece of lip gloss trivia I learned from this conversation: the stripe near the mouth of the vial is not there for decorative purposes but to disguise the fact that it's hard to get an even fill, and is aptly called a "cheater band." Now you know.

Bella Brand: Mixology Makeup

I predict that this will be the year of mineral makeup. The huge success of Bare Escentuals has prodded bigger cosmetics brands to launch their own mineral collections, but there are a few smaller ones worth noticing as well. I've recently discovered Mixology Makeup, a Phoenix-based brand that sells its goods on Etsy.

Mixology will appeal to the tree hugger in you: It's a vegan, organic line without synthetic dyes. Like most mineral-makeup lines, it's able to provide a natural look; unlike some others, the eye shadows are very fine and highly pigmented. They're also well priced at $8.50 each, or you can join the shadow of the month club to receive a surprise shade every four weeks.

From left to right:
Pirate is a dark-matte eggplant shade.

Trench is a twiggy, not-too-chocolatey brown.

Fray is one of my favorite colors. The brown is slightly shimmery, but not in an over-the-top Donna Summers way.

Bones is my other big favorite. Although it's described as a matte highlighter, the color isn't flat, so it still catches light. It's a good choice for using on the brow bone.

Dune is a shimmery beige with a hint of moss green.
