Get pumped! Sunday is the broadcast of the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards. Of course, Pop, Fab, Buzz, and I will all be on hand live-blogging the red carpet event with our love it or hate it polls. Most of the time, stars look devastatingly gorgeous for major awards shows, but other times, not so much. Let's take a look at Emmys past to see where some stars stumbled with their hair and makeup looks.

The Met's Costume Institute Gala: Eva Longoria

Usually sporting black eyeliner and pale lips, Eva has taken a red carpet look that works for her and worked it into the ground. It works for her, but it might be fun to see her switch up her makeup. Maybe she'd fall on her face, but maybe she'd make a brand-new statement. You never know. Her chestnut hair is back at the bobbed length, smooth in the front, fuller in the back. Perfectly lovely. Trend Alert: Farrah Fawcett Hair

They say everything old is new again. (Does that mean the return of claw bangs? I hope not.) But when popular styles from years ago do start to resurface, it's always nice to see how it's adapted to modern times. Take Farrah Fawcett, for instance. Her feathery style was the hallmark of mid- to late-1970s beauty. Is it back in full swing? Not quite, but I'm loving this new version, which is not as much about volume as it is about soft, shiny waves that are curled away from the face. The feathery quality is still there - it's just been refined.
Farrah used to get her flippy style with the Schick Speed Styler, as evidenced by this commercial. But if you like this new take on "The Farrah," it's easy to do. After blowing out your hair, apply hairspray with a drier formulation that still provides shine, like Sally Hershberger Supreme Head Brilliant Hairspray ($13). Next, using a flat iron, wrap sections of hair around the barrel of the iron, as if you were using a curling iron. Focus on curling each section away from your face. When you're finished, you can either softly twist sections together so that they're intertwined or lightly break up the style with your fingers. Spritz again with hairspray, and you'll be far out.

Ken Paves Dishes on Eva Longoria's SAG Awards Hairstyle

It's clear that Eva Longoria and her longtime hairstylist, Ken Paves, have that certain client/stylist chemistry. "She is always willing to try something new and have fun," he said. "We laugh a lot." As for the curled updo last night? Paves looked to Longoria's peach chiffon gown for inspiration. "I saw this dress a couple weeks ago and instantly thought Grace Kelly 'Longoria,'" he explained. "I wanted to create something reminiscent of old-world glamour that was modern and would appear effortless."
While an appointment with Ken Paves might not be a reality, I've got the second best thing - hairstyling tips straight from the source. "The most important thing is to work from your natural texture and keep it simple," he advised. "It is very chic to look effortless." I couldn't agree more. To get the how-to from Paves, read more.

Paves created texture on Longoria's partially air-dried hair using Ken Paves Healthy Hair Volumizing Hair Spray ($24).
Next, he tousled her hair with his fingers while blowing it dry, allowing her part to fall naturally.
When her hair was dry, he used a 3/4-inch curling iron with random sectioning to encourage a natural texture. He also focused the direction of the curl down and away from the part.
Using Ken Paves Healthy Hair Shine Serum ($30), he broke up the wave by running his hands through her hair from roots to ends.
Next he broke up the curl further with a mixed bristle Mason Pearson brush and pulled her hair back loosely, pinning it with bobby pins.
For the finishing touch, he set the hair with Ken Paves Healthy Hair Strong Hold Shaping Hair Spray ($24).

2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards: Eva Longoria

It could be the lack of dark shadow or those very long (false?) lashes that pop out here, but Eva's outlined eyes were the first thing I noticed about this red-carpet look. A distant second: A distinctive hairstyle. The soft waves really show off her hair's various tones. Is this a highlight of the night for you, or is it over the top?

How-To: Eva Longoria Parker's Hair at the 2009 Golden Globes

With such a show-stopping frock, I was glad to see a simpler hairstyle not try to compete with her Reem Acra gown and floral diamond buds. Personally, I think her look is lovely, so I'm glad to share this hairstyle with you.

Taking inspiration from 70's icon Ali MacGraw, Ken Paves created her simply timeless look. The key is to keep things straight and shiny, so find out how he did it when you read more.

Start with towel-dried hair and add a serum like Ken Paves Healthy Hair Shine Serum.
Part down the middle and blow-dry straight with a mixed-bristle brush (like a Mason Pearson).
Flat iron the hair and for added sleekness and pull low and tight before securing with an elastic. Wrap some hair around the base of the ponytail to hide the band, if desired.
For added shine, add more serum but leave a little texture around the hairline (i.e., don't slick hair back super-straight). This prevents the look from becoming too severe.
Help the look stay all day, or night, by finishing up with hairspray such as Ken's Healthy Hair Strong Hold Shaping Spray, which he used on Eva.

Behold one of the stars of Desperate Housewives, Eva Longoria. She's looking not so desperate, or all that housewife-y, for that matter.

The petite beauty goes for simple elegance with a streamlined color scheme. Some warm peach blush on the apples of her cheeks, a dash of peachy gloss and eyeshadow, and brownish-black eyeliner accentuate her delicate features. She finishes off her look with a sleek, pulled-back hairstyle. What do you think of her hair and makeup? Is it simply pretty or simply too plain?
