This does exactly what an eyelash curler should do and the rubber insert is soft and supple, unlike some eyelash curlers out there. It is metal so it is sturdy and won't crack like the plastic curlers. Tip: Heat with a hair dryer for 15 to 20 seconds (at low heat) for added curl.

"I bought the old Revlon one years ago and ended up throwing it away. I thought eyelash curlers were a joke. I read about this one and was skeptical. I am totally sold on this product! It is essential."

A Quick Tip About Eyelash Curlers

Over the weekend, a reader e-mailed me because she's been losing her eyelashes. She used to have thick, full lashes, but more recently, they'd been falling out. After she explained her beauty routine, I immediately knew what was up. She was using an eyelash curler, but the way she used it was the culprit: She curled her lashes both before and after using mascara.

One of the easiest ways to make your eyes look bigger is to use an eyelash curler, but it's essential to curl your lashes only before applying mascara. (Here's how to use a curler.) If you curl after applying mascara, the curler will stick to the coated lashes. At worst, it breaks the lashes then and there; at best, it will weaken your lashes over time, making them more likely to fall out.

Fortunately, lashes grow back over time, and my reader friend will soon be back to her doe-eyed self. But to avoid lash loss in the first place, curl them only before slicking on your mascara.

Now that you know how to use an eyelash curler, I thought I'd give you a couple of cool tools of the trade to choose from. These eyelash curlers are safe, small and easy to use (really, they are)! I can't wait to hear what you think.

It's hard to imagine that there's a new eyelash curler out on the market from Shu Uemura since the old one has been at the top of the charts for several years now. It is actually so popular that at one time they made a limited-edition 24 carat gold version of it.

Even so, now you can buy the new Shu Curler ($18) which claims to have upgraded features and enhanced precision. Some of the improvements include a mushroom-shaped pad for improved safety, comfort and optimum curl; a new hinge that applies just the right amount of pressure on your eyelashes; and an ergonomic handle for better control.

Available in black and red, Sephora Detail Lash Curler ($14) is perfect for those of you who complain that you can't get all of your lashes curled all at once with standard lash curlers. This baby is cut slightly smaller, so you can attack one section of your lashes at a time. Here's a tip: crimp the outer corners for a few seconds longer than the rest to create a flirty cat eye!

Tweezerman Deluxe Lash Curler ($9) is crafted to be extra sturdy to help create a smooth and intense curl. The opening of the metal clamp contains a soft black pad that is rounded for your comfort. I haven't tried this one, but I feel like any tool that Tweezerman makes must be rockin'.

This battery-operated curler is lightweight and delightfully easy to use. Just slide the blue button upward to turn it on, and in about 15 seconds, the red strip turns clear to show that it's fully heated. From there, using the curler is just like using any other one-but the heat really sets the curl more dramatically than traditional curlers. I usually admire my doe-like lashes for a moment before swiping on a coat of Kevyn Aucoin The Mascara to set the curl. Turns out Mom really did know best.

How To: Using an Eyelash Curler

Lots of ladies out there are scared of curling their eyelashes, but really, there's no reason to be afraid. So in this week's How To, I'll be explaining how to use an eyelash curler.

I'm not going to lie: Using a curling tool is a strange sensation, but it certainly doesn't hurt. Plus, I'm willing to endure some awkwardness for long, curled lashes. Step 1: Start when your lashes are clean, dry, and mascara-free. Open the eyelash curler and, keeping your eyes open, place your upper lashes between the two sides.
Step 2: Starting at the inner corner of your eye, position the curler as close as possible to your eyelid without pinching your skin. When your lashes are tucked inside, gently clamp the curler together.
Step 3: Hold for ten seconds, then repeat as necessary, moving outward to curl the entire lash line.
