When Mr. Bella was first courting me, he went on and on about my eyes. "They change color depending on your mood," he said. I smiled at the sweetness but insisted that such a thing was impossible, that any perceived shift in color was due to him needing an eye exam. I mean, I'm hardly an ocular mood ring. This became one of those cutesy couple "arguments" that we had again and again.

One thing was for certain: My eyes were much greener than they'd been when I was growing up as a blue-eyed girl. What was going on? To get to the bottom of this, I approached Jacque L. Duncan, M.D., Department of Ophthalmology, University of California, San Francisco. "Some loss of iris pigment occurs with age," she said. Fair enough. But what about the alleged color shift depending on mood? I suspected it was due to different lighting, and Duncan cleared that up. "The iris sometimes tends to reflect colors that surround it," she explained. "I think your thought about different light is closest to the truth." I love being right, but I like romance even more, so I might just file this away in the "I was right" files rather than squash Mr. Bella's romantic eye-praising.

How-To: Make Small Eyes Look Larger

Makeup artists have all kinds of tricks up their sleeves, and I always love uncovering their little secrets and sharing them with you. Makeup is a great way to create the illusion of having wider eyes, higher cheekbones, fuller lips, and arched brows. For those of you with slender, almond-shaped eyes who want to create a wider and brighter look, here's what you'll need:

bone-colored eye shadow
darker-colored crease shadow
white or champagne cream shadow
tweezers
curling mascara
black or deep-brown eyeliner
white eyeliner

Step 1: Examine your eyebrows and pluck away any stray hairs that prevent them from looking tidy. Also, if you thin out your brows a little bit, you will create more space on your eyelid, which will make that area look larger.
Step 2: Apply a pale-neutral base color to your entire eyelid, from your lashes to your brows. The idea is that light shades brighten the eye. Using too many dark colors will only make eyes look smaller. Next, shade the outer corner of the lid and the crease with your darker color and blend well using a back-and-forth motion.
Step 3: Dab a little of your white- or champagne-colored cream shadow under the brow bone and blend. Add a touch more to the the center of the lid and watch how your eyes will instantly brighten up.
Step 4: Use the dark eyeliner (or simply wet your crease color) and line your upper eyelash line, making sure to extend the line just past the outer corner of your eye. Line your lower lashes with a lighter touch and follow by smudging both of the lines with a Q-tip or brush to soften the look. Next, use a white- or cream-colored eyeliner along the inner rims of your eyes.
Step 5: Curl your eyelashes and then apply two coats of curling mascara to your top lashes only. Concentrate the mascara in the middle and the outer corners of the eye using upward strokes.

Make Your Eye Color Pop With the Right Shadow Shades

Earlier this week I gave you the scoop on how to achieve Hayden Panettiere's Emmy look straight from Amy Oresman, who was responsible for the young star's eye-popping makeup. While we were at it, she shared some tips on how to make the most of your eye color. So if you've ever wondered which shades will make your eyes stand out, read on.

For green eyes: Use a warm, pink, or rose tone on the crease and underneath the eye. "That makes sparkling green eyes shine even brighter," Oresman says. She likes Neutrogena's Nourishing Eye Duo in Fairy Dust ($8.79) eye shadow.

For blue eyes: To make blue eyes sizzle, use warm bronze tones. (This cheapie quad is a great example.)

For brown eyes: "Brown-eyed babes have it made, because any warm tone works to enhance their beguiling dark eyes," Oresman says. To create a dramatic contrast against the color of the pupil and the whiteness of the eye, line the waterline of the eyes with eyeliner. (Here's how.)
