The big trend right now in fragrance is gourmand, or food-based aromas, according to perfume expert Mandy Aftel. So what does it all mean anyway? Are you a floral kind of gal or does chypre do it for you? In case you're uncertain, check out six of some of the more popular fragrance category definitions below. Then, impress your friends with your olfactory group knowledge about the "juice" - 'cuz you know, that's how it's referred to in the biz.

Sweet Tart: Divine Lemon Beauty Goodies

Once, on a trip to Sorrento, I stayed in a beautiful pied a terre that overlooked a lemon and blood orange grove. At night, the fragrance from the blossoms and newly fallen fruit was intoxicatingly heady, and so heavy that it made me dizzy. Combined with the Sorrento moonlight (and the limoncello), well . . . let's just say that since then, real lemon has been one of my favorite scents. It's so refreshing and cool, with the bitter edge that makes it exciting, too. And lemon can be eminently feminine without being floral or cloying, which is part of what makes it such a singular scent. I'm always nostalgic for Italian sojourns long past this time of year, so I've put together some lovely lemon products that have all the yummy tartness of the original. Take a bite out of a couple yourself - and stay away from the limoncello.

Fragrance Review: Jil by Jil Sander

You might know Jil Sander as a German designer with a minimalistic style, and that's exactly the kind aesthetic you'll get with her new fragrance, Jil ($58-$70), a floral amber that just launched last week. The scent, which has powdery characteristics, contains top notes of pink pepper and tangerine for a bit of brightness, with lavender mellowing it out. At the heart is where you get most of the action, with lily of the valley bringing a hint of sweetness, orris lending an earthiness, and heliotrope providing a musky quality. Warm Up With These Comfy Cold-Weather Scents

When the air starts to get a little nippy and my sweaters come out of the closet, I start daydreaming about cold weather perfumes. I put away my beachy scents and find creamy, spicy, deep fragrances with the rich, comforting notes of cinnamon, cardamom, labdanum, almond, Tahitian vanilla, bergamot tea, and warm woods. I'm still on my way to finding the perfect sweater scent, but I thought I'd put together a few that might be a good bet for you. From heavy-hitting classics like Penhaligon's Bluebell (woody, earthy and soft, with a few sweet florals) to inexpensive but delicious scents like Carol's Daughter Almond Cookie (just plain yummy), there are fragrances here for every taste and budget, but all of the entries promise to make you feel like you're curled up under a comfy throw with something warm to sip on. SJP Channels Carrie B. For Her New Fragrance

Can't get enough SATC? You'll like this news, then. Sarah Jessica Parker is launching a new scent, called SJP NYC, in conjunction with the release of Sex and the City 2 next May. And as you might expect given the launch date, SJP says this one is more about her SATC character then it is about her. “A large part of the inspiration was what I now understand to be people’s impressions of seeing Carrie Bradshaw walk down the street," she told WWD."We wanted to create a party in a bottle." (I always thought Carrie looked more harried and anxious in the opening than ready to party, but maybe that's just me.)

For those of you interested in hitting the club with this one, the scent is a fruity floral, and the packaging (and low price points-15 ml is $25) makes it seem like it's designed to skew younger. SJP NYC has top notes of Italian mandarin, white osmanthus and strawberries, a big, floral middle with gardenia, honeysuckle, mimosa and rose, and a drydown with sandalwood, vanilla, rum, and musk. What do you think? Will this one be a as lovely and coveted as her other two scents, or do the notes suggest Carrie's not nearly as talented a perfumer as SJP?
