Junk Food Beauty, Coming To a Drugstore Near You

Who else remembers using Dr. Pepper lip balm? It's still around (a steal at just $1.60) and soon it will have much more company: The number of food-inspired beauty products is about to swell.

Lotta Luv is a company that creates cosmetics with a junk-food bent. It makes licensed lip balms inspired by foods that would make a dentist blush: Dairy Queen fudge sundaes, Pez, Twinkies, Snapple juice drinks, Twizzlers, Jelly Belly and at least another dozen sweet-tooth staples. WWD reports that a few new products are on the way. Cold Stone Creamery will have sliding-tin balms that will be sold at the ice cream shops nationwide, and a cute, vintagey Hershey's cocoa bath and body collection is in the works.

Okay, I can see the appeal of those items. But I'm scratching my head over a licensing agreement with McDonald's, with products due next year. I'm trying to figure out which McDo menu items could translate into cosmetic products. Most likely it'll be the chocolate shake and apple pie, but who knows? We could see McNugget lip balms or Filet O'Fish body polish. Personally, I don't know if I would trust Ronald to stock my beauty arsenal; that red lipstick never really did flatter him...

DIY Spa Treatment: Depuffing Cucumber Honey Eye Nourisher

From making your own bubble bath to a wide variety of ideas for creating your own body scrubs, isn't it apparent that I love me some DIY formulations? Recently I came across this Cucumber Honey Eye Nourisher recipe from celebrity esthetician Christopher Watt for Honey.com, and immediately realized it was a perfect addition to our DIY coverage. Not only does this four-ingredient mask help reduce puffiness around the eye area, but it also soothes and cools the delicate skin surrounding your peepers.
To make, first steep chamomile tea in boiling water and set aside until cooled. Blend together one tablespoon aloe vera gel, two teaspoons peeled and seeded cucumber, and 1/2 teaspoon of honey in a blender or food processor. Next, add 1/2 teaspoon of chamomile tea and blend until smooth. Each batch makes four treatments and can be stored in an air-tight container for up to a week.

Viktor & Rolf Try to Outdo Flowerbomb With Eau Mega

Flowerbomb, Viktor & Rolf's first fragrance, has been a cult hit since it came out a few years ago. But this week, the brand quietly released its second scent, Eau Mega. Just so you all know how dedicated I am to good-smellin' stuff, I trekked all the way down to Nordstrom during lunch to sniff it, since only a few locations have the fragrance so far. Luckily, the reconnaissance on this baby is good.

V&R didn't play it safe at all, and Eau is totally different from the F-bomb, though just as playful. The atomizer is also too cute to be believed, and well worth playing with (you spray it by squeezing the big gold V&R seal on the side). Of all the teen-mag advice I read back in the day, one bit stands out as an unwavering truth: there's no magic pill to change the size of your bustline. But don't tell that to the makers of these items. These odd snacks, creams, and drinks promise to turn tangerines to cantaloupes, molehills into mountains, cupcakes into, uh, larger cakes. Do they work? I wouldn't hold my breast. Er, breath. But for a laugh, yes, they certainly work.

Reader Review of the Day: Nature's Gate Hemp Velvet Moisture Body Wash

Here's a fatty that won't get you in any trouble. I'm talking essential fatty acids, which are nourishing for the skin, and incidentally, found in hemp seed oil, a main ingredient of Nature's Gate Hemp Velvet Moisture Body Wash ($6). Reader Hottpink sung the praises of this moisturizing cleanser, and here's what she had to say:

I was on the hunt for a body wash that was eco- and animal-friendly, and thought I would give this a try after spying it at a Whole Foods Body. Overall, I am really pleased with this body wash. It has a slightly earthy scent which is not overpowering at all, and it really moisturizes my dry skin. Unlike some body washes, this rinses away clean and doesn't leave that "film" feeling. It doesn't suds up as much as bar soap, but I don't mind. I have even used it to shave when I ran out of shaving cream. Another plus: it lasts a long time!

Castle's Makeup Artist Debbie Zoller Gets Gory At Work

As the head makeup artist on ABC's crime dramedy Castle, Debbie Zoller creates everyday makeup looks for the show's main characters. But, seeing that the program is not without its fair share of murder mysteries, Zoller must also create blood spatters, prosthetic detached fingers, and mangled body parts, often working in the most unusual of situations. "Last season we had [to create] a frozen girl dumped out of a freezer," she said. Yikes.

Recently, I caught up with Zoller, who is up for an Emmy for her previous work on Mad Men (more here), to find out more about what a typical workday is like onset at Castle.

Do You Like Food-Scented Beauty Products?

When I saw these Jelly Pong Pong popsicle soaps (about $10 each), I first smiled at their design. Then I looked at the scents - watermelon, lemonade, fudge, etc - and wasn't as keen on the idea. To me, food-scented beauty can be a wonderful treat for the senses, or it can be an olfactory disaster that turns my stomach. I need to ask Yum for her thoughts on the subject, but I'm curious as to yours, too.
