UK's ASA to ghd: FU!

Britain's Advertising Standards Authority would like to straighten something out with hair-care company ghd. The ASA recently banned ghd's latest advertising campaign, which features women praying for beautiful hair. The juxtaposition of lingerie-clad women with iconic Christian imagery didn't sit well with some viewers, and after 23 complaints, the ad was pulled. Here it is, if you want to see what the fuss is about:

I'm not sure that it's the most amazing commercial I've ever seen, but I'm not sure that it's blasphemous, either. Then again, between this ad and the Lookin' Good For Jesus controversy, it seems like beauty companies might want to steer clear from adapting religious images for a while.

Backstage Beauty: Peter Som

While FabSugar attended the Peter Som fashion show last season, they were unable to make it on this trip-but that's okay. BellaSugar's got the goods on how to create the sexy, tousled hair from this season's Spring 2008 show.

The goal of lead hairstylist Eugene Souleiman was to have runway hair that looked fresh, young and natural, with a slight edge. He is quoted saying, "It's the look of the uptown girl that parties downtown."

And on a makeup note, was anyone else surprised they the models weren't wearing the Peter Som for Lancome lipstick? I guess that is just so Fall '07.

Step 1: Cleanse and nourish hair with the appropriate shampoo and conditioning treatment for your hair type.
Step 2: Spray hair with a little bit of ghd miracle mist to control fly-aways and frizz. Next, spray on some ghd thermal protector to ensure hair won't get damaged during the heat styling process.
Step 3: Then, to achieve the natural tousled look, use the ghd new styler (as opposed to a standard flat iron) on the part of the hair closest to the scalp and bring it down only mid-way. Do not iron the ends of the hair.
Step 4: Lastly, spray on a generous amount of ghd sea spray to create matte, beachy waves. Use your fingers to separate any curls that seem overly defined.

How-To: Sexy Beach Hair In The City

Salty, wavy, thick beach hair is super-sexy - and it doesn't have to be something that you only achieve in the summertime by the sand. Here's how to achieve this faboo tousled wind blown look during the rest of the year.

First, shampoo and condition your hair before bed and towel dry your hair. Evenly distribute either a mousse or product with hold to it, in even sections throughout your hair. If you have thick or wavy hair, apply a relaxing balm to smooth your curls and tame frizz. Comb through.
Next, scrunch your hair before you fall asleep and when you wake, your hair will have great texture and volume.
To fix the front, just wet and blow out the pieces that are funky. Then take a large sized curling iron and wrap about ten different pieces around it to give your hair some freshness, body and bounce.

Kusco Murphy Beach Hair, $29, was created by Australian hair stylist, Kevin Murphy. It's what this pro uses on his cover girls for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. It contains crushed Bamboo (for volume), Stinging Nettle (for strength) and Coconut Oil with Bergamot (for texture).

When hair is already dry, apply a small amount onto your hands and scrunch your hair from the tips towards your roots. The more you use the stronger the effect. Then, continue to mold your hair until you are happy with the shape.

Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray, $21.50, is a seaweed extract based product that gives your hair a sexy, salty "sea" texture.

Spray a couple of spritzes all over your hair and then scrunch away. To refresh your hair throughout the day, continue to spritz and scrunch!

I'd venture to say that even though the temperatures may dip, the majority of us wear sunglasses year-round, depending on how much the sun decides to shine. If you're like me, you probably put your sunglasses on your head, but this can cause some major styling hassles: hair caught in the hinges, dents in your hair, frizz, etc. So I've put together a few tips to keep your hair looking great and dent-free. It's Playboy-Inspired Sexytime at Miss Sixty

"Miss Sixty is always very sexy," stylist Andy Bodine said before models hit the catwalk with big, bouncy, voluminous hair. "It’s a combination of smooth, shiny, polished hair that looks healthy, but also has some kinks in it."

Some of the length was due to extensions, but creating the look at home is surprisingly do-able. After running ghd Maximise Mousse through hair to create lift and hold, dry hair while using a round brush at the roots to create volume and height. Create crimps by gathering hair into loops, then setting it with a styling iron. "The [ghd iv] styler creates crimps and bends," Bodine told me. "It’s a great way to use your styling iron."

Speaking of sexy, let's chat about the makeup. "The look was inspired by Playboy in the late '60s and early '70s - when it was cool," said makeup artist Romy Soleimani. "It’s a rounded smoky eye with black liner and black pigment." Don't go for the cat-eye with this one; instead, think soft and curved. Kind of like a pin-up model, huh?

Proenza Schouler Gets Their Wartime On

Backstage at Proenza Schouler, war was on everyone's mind. No, not in a political way - this is Fashion Week, after all - but in an aesthetic way. "The inspiration was how women looked so glamorous during wartime, when they were working in the factories but still had their red lipstick on," said makeup artist Diane Kendal. "It’s a very modern approach; it’s not an obvious translation of Rosie the Riveter."

To bring forth a bold red lip, she blended MAC Red lipstick, set it with powder, dusted Red MAC Pro pigment on top, then topped it off with Red Electric MAC Pro pigment to give it that neon pink punch.

The hairstyles also took inspiration from the past, but in different ways. Some models wore their hair parted to the far side, letting long matte waves fall in front of their eyes; others had shiny, slicked-back, short styles. "We looked to 1920s glamour for the long-haired girls, and late 1970s disco for the short-haired girls," explained stylist Omar Lopez. To create the long-haired look, the hair team sectioned off hair, then used the ghd IV mini styler to create waves. A spritz of ghd Sea Spray created a matte effect, and then stylists used metal clips around the face to set the curl. Turns out that using a little retro technique can create a look that's thoroughly modern overall.

Inside Sephora Headquarters for Holiday

I just returned from what would definitely be heaven for all of the beauty product junkies out there. Sephora was hosting a merchandise fair for its employees, so everybody could learn about all of the different brands. And if that's not enough, the employees were able to try out all kinds of products and treatments to get dolled up for their holiday party.

Oh, dang! You know I had to sneak in. So I did!

Inside, it was crazy-in a good way. Bliss was offering facials, ghd was styling hair, Urban Decay was applying glitter, and everybody was in a great mood. Lots of people were re-creating the holiday looks from the Sephora catalog, and it was really cool to see them come to life.

Vanessa Dunn from the Sephora Pro Team was applying false eyelashes, so when she asked if I'd like to try out a pair, I didn't think twice. I went for the black feather lashes because they're so over-the-top. Vanessa first measured the lashes, then ran some glue along the edge, and used tweezers to apply them right above my lashline. Voila! What do you think? (Katie was mesmerized.)

April, a makeup artist with Cargo, gave me the scoop on some Spring 2008 product launches. Cargo is coming out with HD Foundation, which is meant to erase tiny imperfections and make you ready for high-definition closeups. The company is also coming out with Texas Lash, a mascara that gives bigger, longer lashes. (You can see it on my lower lashes.) Both of these products will be out in February, so I'll try to get my paws on them to tell you more about them.
