Usually the color gray is reserved for cashmere, not cosmetics. But as it turns out, gray is continuing the transition into beauty products, and it can be a chic and versatile color for nails. Essie's new Luxeffects holiday collection is really exceptional - there's not a single special effect coat that's disappointing or not worth your time. In fact, most of them are so pretty that it's cool to wear them without any other polish. Shine of the Times, which looks like the "fire" inside an opal, looks amazing all by itself, and it's even better with a little bit of silver glitter Set in Stones or rose glitter A Cut Above layered on the tips.

The other two shades are As Gold As It Gets, a pretty soft gilt shimmer, and
Pure Pearlfection, which gives nails a mother of pearl effect. They're great as well, but best layered over an opaque polish. As Gold As It Gets looks amazing over black, charcoal, or navy, and Pure Pearlfection is a great topper for dove gray or orchid shades.

Custom-Blend Nails Shine at Costello Tagliapietra

At Costello Tagliapietra, manicurist Deborah Lippmann (for Beauty.com) nailed a chic, sophisticated look with a nude-gray hue. "The woman is 'finished,'" Lippmann said of the collection's inspiration. "She's definitely a woman, not a little girl." To play off the textures and patterns of the clothes, Lippmann layered two nail polishes to create a neutral nail that flattered models of all skin tones. First, she adorned nails with Waking Up in Vegas, a creamy gray with blue undertones. Then, she added a coat of Fashion, a yellow-based taupe. Customizing the color for each model involved using thicker or thinner coats to complement their undertones; the key to getting it right lies in the cuticle. "If your cuticle looks red, brown, or darkened when a polish is applied, the color is wrong for you," Lippmann explained. "With this look, we can make it look great on everybody."

Jason Wu and CND have come out with a color collection full of subtle delights, including a shade in his signature gray, Miss Wu, and a delectable red the hue of Bing cherries called Veronica (above). But the most exciting shade in the collection isn't a color at all; it's a new special effect polish. The effect, called Anna (also pictured), is supposed to mimic the appearance of tweed wool.
