From triple-banded to cleverly braided, there were all sorts of inspiring, creative ponytails seen at Spring 2012 New York Fashion Week. And here's another look to add to your must-try list: a wraparound ponytail featuring animal-print hair extensions.

Even better, it takes about a minute to create. Start by gathering your hair in a ponytail and securing it with an elastic. Next, clip the extension, such as Hairuwear's Clip-In Animal Print Hair Extension ($10) underneath the ponytail so it's hidden from sight. Countless women use extensions to get a little boost in length and volume, but in reality, are these hairy additions causing all sorts of hairy situations? New York City dermatologist Dr. Eric Schweiger seems to think so. "We have patients in their early 20s who come in after having having hair extensions for six months or a year, and they actually have bald areas of scalp," he told Good Morning America.

And while there are definitely people who experience hair loss as a direct result of extensions, many have no difficulties at all. "Everybody can wear hair extensions," explained Angelo David, owner of the Angelo David Salon in NYC, adding, "the formula is getting them to the right extension." To see more, just read on.

This week a hair loss expert at the London Centre of Trichology came out and said that in the last two years, he's seen a 15 percent increase in women seeking treatment after damaging their hair with glue extensions - which he now believes should be straight-up banned before they scalp more women. The trichologist told the BBC that the extension-related hair loss is traction alopecia, which is a condition caused when too much tension is regularly placed on the hair roots, pulling out the hairs, and damaging the follicles permanently. Hang Onto Your Weave: Human Hair Thieves Strike Again!

We've told you about three different women dubbed "Botox Bandits" for getting the procedure and then running from the doctors' offices before paying. We also reported on a woman who spent $12,000 on lipo and breast implants using a stolen credit card. But the newest beauty crime wave-the reselling of ill-gotten beauty loot-has hit, and the price tag of the stolen goods is even higher.

This week, weave-grabbers broke into a Houston beauty shop, swiping $150,000 worth of hair extensions. "Thieves have recently taken $10,000 in hair from a San Diego shop; $85,000 from a business in Missouri City, Tex.; $10,000 from a shop in Dearborn, Mich.; and $60,000 from a business in San Leandro, California," according to The New York Times. Burglars at a Chicago beauty shop were so hair-focused that they stole $90,000 worth of extensions, yet left the cash register full!

Maybe the strangest thing about these robberies is that the weave thieves really know their stuff: they only make off with human hair, not less expensive synthetic strands. Store owners say these crooks will likely sell the extensions on the street or to less-savvy salons, like knock-off purses or bootleg DVDs.
