To apply highlighters such as Benefit's High Beam, use these simple tips:

First, be sure to pick the right color for your skin tone. Women with blue undertones should use a pinkish color like High Beam, and if your skin is more yellow, use a golden color.
With the nail polish-like brush, draw an X on the apple of each of cheek and beneath each brow.
Using your fingertips, blend the Xs in an upward and outward circular motion.
For an all-over dewy effect, try mixing just a dab of highlighter into your foundation or moisturizer.

House Tour: Making an Old House New Again

I'm excited to present a post from one of my favorite sites, ShelterPop!

Designer RJ Thornburg transforms a former pig farm into a modern retreat.

Old houses are full of charm and character, but that doesn't mean its interiors have to feel as antique. It can be surprisingly fresh to complement the classic bones of an old house with modern, retro, casual, or traditional decorating.

RJ Thornburg, an interior designer at Bahdeebahdu, and his partner, lighting designer, Warren Muller, did just that with their 1865 country home in the Poconos. Aiming for high style on a low budget, they balanced dark and neutral tones, brought in hints of color, and used artwork to deliver modern decor. The mission was to make the home feel contemporary - without losing any of its charm.

In a space that fits a lot of furniture, fabrics, and finishes, like their living room (shown above), balance is key in keeping it from looking cluttered and stuffy. Thornburg retained the raw exposed beams to balance the more urban look of dark ebony floors and an animal-hide rug.

"We also paired old rattan chairs with oversized and more delicate silk damask pillows, and the simple modern square shape of the fireplace is matched with a traditional hearth guard," he explained. Warren designed the modern light sculpture above the fireplace, which was made from a piece of old farm equipment.

Hallways are generally transitional spaces, but in this house they are interesting places to visit (see above). In the downstairs entryway (left), they paired an antique console with a substantial sculptural element, which creates a very traditional look. However, the vignette is modernized with modern artwork, which is bright, raw, and unexpected.

Upstairs (right), Thornburg left the hall unfinished with unstained floors and beadboard on the ceiling, which they purchased from a big-box home store. Again, the country look is accented with a more urban look; the hall is punctuated with a modern light sculpture.

When we replaced our windows earlier this Winter, our contractor took a close look at our deck and advised us to clean it as soon as the rains stopped. So it was a timely reminder to read about some essential deck maintenance tips in Holmes: The Magazine to Make It Right.

If you suspect that your deck needs basic maintenance, Mike Holmes advises looking out for the following:

Green or Black Spots: "Look above and below boards. The spots indicate mildew and mold. If you find spots, clean and treat the surface ASAP, but do not use a pressure cleaner; it can damage the deck."
Gray Boards: "If the boards are losing color, it’s a sign of sun damage. To avoid cracking and splitting, put on a new coat of protective sealant."
No Water Beading: "If rain soaks directly into the boards instead of beading up, it’s time to apply a water-and mildew-repellent stain."

John Travolta and Kelly Preston beamed yesterday as they stepped out of the Ritz Hotel in Paris with their daughter, Ella, and young son Benjamin. The Travolta gang headed to the City of Lights to spend Father's Day there as a foursome. It was the latest stop on young Benjamin's busy itinerary - the 7-month-old is a frequent jet-setter between the US and Europe with his high-flying parents. John may have to stay put on set in the coming months. He's due to start shooting Gotti: In The Shadow of My Father, and Kelly apparently has a role in the picture, too.

In this post, she talks about the one key factor that keeps her spirits up during her unemployment - friends.

What is a friend? In my eyes, a friend is defined as the quintessential support beam through the myriads of adversities encountered through the journey we call life. The ones that not only see you smile but the ones that see you cry. In job searching, this role is no exception. Through my last post, I had been asked, “How do you stay so positive and never lose the motivation or drive to keep searching”? And with that question, I began to ponder about my own experience and ask myself that exact question. Although many abstract ideas began popping into my head, one factor remains concrete: friends. Now you may ask why I did not include family into the bundle, and I will shortly explain why.

Coming from a traditional Asian family, I had rarely gone against the wishes and desires of my parents, at least, not until recently. I was taught that success and hard work provided lavish items like spacious vacation homes, or luxurious materialistic items. In my own family, this success was modeled by the professions of doctors, lawyers, and entrepreneurs with little much in between. As an anecdote, I remember being berated by my father at the age of 14 years old for wishing to attend a “fashion and business” course at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. With a small stash fund, I combined three paychecks from my part-time job as a children’s craft party hostess and DJ to subsidize this course, and to this day, I have no regrets. Looking back, the costly sum of $300 to my 14-year-old self then is a priceless piece of my education now. While my parents and family do not particularly advocate my life in the retail and fashion world in terms of prestige, job security and sustainability, my friends have always been the ones that kept me reaching for the stars.
