In news we love, iconic actress and all-around awesome-seeming lady Isabella Rossellini got to be the first to wear Nars's as-yet-unreleased Pure Matte lipstick in Tonkin. Usually, the first person to get to wear a trendy new makeup shade is some nubile starlet, but we think it's cooler - and a lot more interesting - to choose an incredibly gorgeous, smart, mature woman like Isabella.

Plus, who better to endorse your brand, since Isabella was attending the CFDA Gala, which is a mecca for fashion types. What do you think? Would you like to see more diversity like this, or is there a good reason most models are teenagers?

The divine Isabella Rossellini is not only beautiful (getting genes from Ingrid Bergman didn't hurt) and talented (Blue Velvet, anyone?), but also totally offbeat and funny. Here she is on the Sundance Channel's second installment of its Green Porno series telling us about the fascinating sex life of the limpet sea creature.

Get a load of this: The limpet (a sequential hermaphrodite) starts off sexless. Then it turns female. Next, it's joined by another sexless limpet that turns male. (Are you still with me?) They mate, the female dies, and then the male closest to her turns female himself. Wow. Honestly, Isabella could read the directions on a shampoo bottle and I would be rapt in fascination. Bella Donna: Isabella Rossellini

Born in 1952 to the Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman and Italian director Roberto Rossellini, it seems only natural for Isabella Fiorella Elettra Giovanna Rossellini to be equally legendary herself. She arrived in New York at the age of 19 holding a variety of jobs from translator to television reporter before her first movie role in 1976, alongside her mother in A Matter of Time. Finding some success and enjoyment in acting, she had her first big-screen starring role in The Meadow a few years later.

Of the many hats worn by Isabella, though, it was modeling that gave her the most recognition. First appearing at age 28 in British Vogue, it was two years later that she became the first model to sign an exclusive contract with Lancome in 1982, a role which reportedly earned her more than $2 million to date. (Her daughter Elettra Rossellini Wiedemann is also a Lancome model.)

read more. Serving as an spokesperson and official face of the cosmetics company, Isabella was associated with the fragrance, makeup, and skin care line before until her infamous "firing" in 1996 for being "too old" to continue in her role. She was only 40. She later said:

What hurt me was that after fourteen years, with the marketing research so positive and the company selling so much, I thought that the cosmetics industry finally had the opportunity to break this taboo about women in their forties not being beautiful, that narrow idea of beauty.

It's hard not to see her point there and, sadly while things are somewhat better some 10 years later, there are still big improvements that can be made. Kudos to this Bella Donna for her intellect and her beauty.

Ashley Olsen Is Casual, Sexy, Cool

I was impressed by Mary-Kate Olsen on Monday night, but yesterday Ashley looked just fabulous at the Everywhere At Once Cocktail Party and Screening Hosted by Harper's Bazaar in NYC. Look at that grin, love it! Everyone is wearing those Balenciaga gladiator sandals these days, eh? It's always a treat to see the Olsen girls all happy and hopefully as she's staying away from Samantha Ronson so LL won't want to wipe that smile off her face.

Would You Rather be Brilliant or Beautiful?

Isabella Rossellini never fails to impress me with her unique beauty. Yes, she lucked out genetically - having Ingrid Bergman as your mom can't hurt. But to me, the former Lancome model is really attractive because of her intelligence.

If I had to choose between being drop-dead gorgeous but not very bright, or being homely but brilliant, I'd choose the latter. Wit and charm are more valuable than good looks alone, and I'm not just saying that. (Think of the gorgeous guy at a party who winds up having the conversational skills of a banana slug. Compared to the less-handsome but funny and smart dudes, there's no contest.)

I know that you, dear reader, would never have to choose, as you are both smart and beautiful. But if you had to, which way would you go?

About Face: Ex-Models Muse on Beauty and Aging

Renowned photographer and filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders introduces his latest documentary About Face, which chronicles the careers of some of the world's most famous models like Isabella Rossellini, Christie Brinkley, and Jerry Hall. Having faded out of the spotlight, the women intimately divulge brutal truths surrounding the industry's view on aging and beauty - and the drastic methods they have taken to remain forever young. When asked about plastic surgery, ex-Vogue model Carmen Dell'Orefice responds matter-of-factly, "Well, if you had the ceiling falling down in the living room, would you not go and have a repair?"

The film has already received Official Selection at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and will have a few screenings in late January of 2012. However, you will have to stay tuned for a wide release date, as the film is currently in post-production. We'll be waiting eagerly to see it.

Beauty Byte: Kate Winslet Is the New Face of Lancôme Tresor

Recently, I shared a rumor that L’Oréal was considering Kate Winslet as the face of one of its brands. Turns out, the speculation was spot on: Today, Fashion Week Daily is reporting that Winslet will appear in the new ad campaign for Trésor, the popular fragrance from L’Oréal's Lancôme brand.

Winslet flew to Paris to attend a 300-person dinner tonight at the Musée Rodin, where the official announcement will be made. The guests will get a sneak peek at the new ad campaign and a TV spot, both of which will premiere in September.

When I think of Trésor, I always remember the stunning Isabella Rossellini, who was the face of the fragrance in the 1990s. Winslet is a worthy heir indeed.
