Creatures of the Wind, a Chicago-based fashion duo, is quickly picking up buzz as they continue to show at New York Fashion Week. The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runners-up presented their Fall 2012 collection at the Desmond Tutu Center, and the beauty look was just as creative and offbeat as their designs. The hair alone was dramatic, complex, and remarkable - making it the perfect pairing for these rising stars.

Honor's Cool-Girl Look Is Incredibly Easy to Wear

For her Fall 2012 collection, designer Giovanna Randall was inspired by the love story of a preppy boy and free-spirited Argentinean girl. But when it comes to beauty, the inspiration was decidedly Gallic. Borrowing from French singer and style icon Françoise Hardy, the just-slept-on hair and chalky eye makeup were uncomplicated and cool. Honor Goes For a Red-Hot Look

The makeup look at Honor, Giovanna Randall's fledgling clothing line, was a beautifully bright mashup of three separate decades. "The collection has a '70s sensibility, but in an American sportswear way," lead makeup artist James Boehmer said of Randall's sophomore collection. "We didn't want the makeup or hair to look '70s, because then the clothes would, too." Instead, he dipped into the '90s for an "anarchistic" look, adding touches of club-kid style of the early '80s.

The touchstone of the look, an orangey-red eye look, was inspired by desert colors - no eye shadow necessary. Boehmer used Red Square Velvet Matte Lip Pencil as a base, then blended two Nars blushes (Exhibit A and Taj Mahal) to create a look that contrasted with the rich teals, pinks, and yellows of the collection. The key to pulling off such bright shades? "Wear it with confidence and strength," says Boehmer.

Honor Debuts A Cool-Girl Look, Literally

Honor, the debut collection by Giovanna Randall, was inspired by Grace Kelly and Catherine Deneuve - along with a hint of Cyndi Lauper. No wonder, then, that NARS makeup artist James Boehmer went for the ultimate icy-girl look. "Giovanna wanted the girls to feel individual," Boehmer said of the concept. "We wanted the makeup not to look sunny and healthy, but a little cold."

To create this look, Boehmer kept models' faces nearly nude. No mascara or eyeliner was used; instead, he applied NARS eye shadow in Ashes to Ashes for a soft but stormy gray-violet eye. ("It's my hands-down favorite eye shadow," he said. "It's between a dark and a light, and it looks good on everyone." Cheeks were softly contoured with powder blush in Zen, with a little bit of Bombshell eye shadow applied with a blush brush to brighten the cheeks without adding color. To finish the look, Boehmer applied Pure Matte lip color in a new-for-spring chalky pink shade, Madere. The end result, according to him: "The models look polished, but they're not taking away from the clothes."

Backstage Beauty: Alice Ritter

When it comes to Alice Ritter, Fab is a big fan but I'd wager that I'm even more into the French-born designer's chic clothing. At yesterday's presentation, she showed off high-waisted trousers, a subtly ruffled violet dress that I'm dying to buy, and other Gallic-girl ensembles.

Lead hair stylist Takamichi was inspired by easygoing French hairstyles of the '60s and '70s-think Jane Birkin and Brigitte Bardot, or women in films by Godard or Truffaut. "Everything is down, and it's quite natural," he explained. "It's like you see in the movies of the '60s: Very natural, straight down. It's quite simple."

Backstage Beauty: Erin Fetherston

One of my favorite things to do is to watch a model's face go from nude to runway-ready, which is just what I got to do with Nars senior makeup artist James Boehmer. Erin Fetherston's collection was inspired by Juliet (of the Capulets), so James came up with a subtle, innocent face for the show.

Fresh, young, dewy skin is essential to this look. James and his team used concealer only where absolutely necessary, letting the texture of skin show through. A light dusting of loose powder kept foreheads from looking shiny under the lights. (For most models, the shade Snow was used). The eyes were deceptively simple. James used a soft brown pencil to highlight the crease, helping to define the eye without leaving that color visible when the model's eyes were open. A few false lashes near the center of the eye were coated with mascara, but lightly-so that you see long lashes, not obvious mascara.

Cheeks got glowy with a little Rosebud Salve on just the apples, and then the artists added color by blending red lipstick into it. For lips, James dabbed color on the inside of the lip, moving outward. When watching the show, Fab specifically mentioned the makeup-something she doesn't always do-so I was glad to see that she loved the look as much as I did.
