Who's Your Favorite Celebrity Hairstylist?

Celebrities spend so much time in the hair and makeup chair that they become super-duper close to their clientele. Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox pal around together with friend and hairstylist Chris McMillan often, and Jessica Simpson and Ken Paves are best friends! I'm not that close to my hairdresser, but I do love him.

Bella Donna: Joan Jett

It's time for this week's installment of Bella Donna, in which I profile beauty icons throughout the ages. This week's woman is a change from the beauties we've highlighted before. Though Joan Jett is an attractive woman, she isn't what you'd call a classic beauty-she's just got too much attitude for that.

Joan burst onto the music scene as a teenager as part of the all-girl punk band the Runaways. Their snarly hit, "Cherry Bomb," nudged Joan toward stardom, but it was with her later band, the Blackhearts, that she became a superstar. "I Love Rock and Roll" was one of Joan's nine Top 40 hit singles, and with the growth of MTV, it wasn't long before teenagers were mimicking the hot tough-girl style shown in the video.

If you want to look like Joan, your best bet is as follows: Try a tousled shoulder-length shag with bangs, heavy black eyeliner paired with a smoky eye (here's a how-to if you need it) and an understated, matte lip. As far as the skin-tight leather pants are concerned, you're on your own-and considering the fact that Joan is now a vegan, you might want to skip them anyway!

How-To: Kristen Stewart's Faux Bowl Cut at the 2009 VMAs

It's pretty safe to say that last night's 2009 MTV VMAs were one of the most entertaining in recent history. You had your Kanye outburst, Pink's Cirque du Soleil-style act, Lady Gaga's bloody performance, and cast members from Twilight taking the stage to premiere the New Moon trailer. (And in case you didn't hear the buzz, it was also a night for Kristen Stewart to cozy up with costar Robert Pattinson backstage.) At first, it looked like Kristen had chopped her Joan Jett-esque locks, but alas, it was just the mastery of Pantetne celebrity stylist Hallie Bowman, who created this edgy, faux-bowl-cut style with a modern feel. Now, I know many of you might not be fans of the throwback look, but if you're bored with your style and don't want to cut several inches to achieve a new look, this technique might just work for you.

Teen Choice Awards: Kristen Stewart

What a difference a year makes. A year ago, relatively few people had heard of Kristen Stewart; now, she's one of the most famous starlets in Hollywood. After a weekend that included a potentially romantic rendezvous with Robert Pattinson, she strolled the TCA red carpet with a punk-lite style. Silvery eye shadow and almost bare lips complemented her dark hair - dyed for her role as Joan Jett, of course. Are you liking this rocker-girl look on her?

Backstage Beauty: Miss Sixty

Oh, the stories I have to tell you about the Miss Sixty show. But before going any further, would you look at this gorgeous red hair? In a sea of blonde, black, and brown, this model's mane grabbed my attention. I loved it, but then again, the hair in general was so pretty. Neil Moodie of Bumble & bumble created the '70s-influenced look, and I snagged a minute with him before the show. "We wanted to keep the hair a little more simple because in the collection, there's a lot going on," he explained. "It's '70s, but not literal. It needs to be a little more subtle."

I also talked with Gucci Westman, the lead makeup artist who was working with MAC for the show. While she applied deep blue eye shadow to Jessica Stam, she explained the inspiration for the look. "It's a sort of a cross between Joan Jett and bohemian, with a little bit of Endora," she said. As she did with her work for Rag & Bone a few days prior, she used a rich blue as the base for eyes. "I'm feeling the blue," she said.

In the tent itself, I had a great view of noted fashion photographer Nigel Barker and runway coach J. Alexander. Even better is that when the remixed medley of '70s songs switched to "Immigrant Song," Nigel started tapping his fingers to the beat. And before you knew it, he was tapping his toes. And then Miss J got into it, too. What can you say? A little Led Zep never hurt anybody. Bianca from last cycle was also at the show-her head's still shaved, and it looks great-and her behavior was, dare I say it, ladylike. Go figure.

Doing Drugstore: Sally Hershberger's Supreme Head

A haircut with stylist Sally Hershberger normally runs $800-that is, if you can move to the top of her waiting list and you can deal with her unusual working style. But benefiting from her hair expertise is about to get a lot more affordable. Sally (shown here with Joan Jett) is launching Supreme Head, a collection of shampoos, conditioners, and styling products. WWD reports:

The line consists of six shampoos and conditioners (with variants for thin to normal hair, normal to thick hair and wavy hair), three Style Primers (a variant for each hair type), a Shagg Spray, Star Shine, Wreck & Roll Texturing Gel, Wreck & Roll Texturizing Cream and Supreme Lift for normal to thin hair.

Sally, widely considered to be the inspiration for the character Shane of The L Word, is taking extra steps to make sure this is more than a vanity project. "Consumers are more savvy than to buy something with someone's name on the bottle. It has to be smarter than that," she told WWD. "Marc Anthony, Charles Worthington, Samy don't really represent a real point of difference. It is just designer. It is played out."

To combat that perception, customers will be able to go online, enter a product's UPC code, and get Sally's step-by-step instructions on creating their own hairstyles. Supreme Head will be available only at Walgreens for its first year, and as of next month, you'll be able to buy it. Shampoos and conditioners will cost $9.50, while styling products will be $12.50-far, far less than the cost of a chop from Sally herself.

Tegan and Sara: Low-Maintenance Fashion Mullets

I've been meaning to write about Tegan & Sara for a while now, just because their haircuts are so different from most of the celebrity styles we see on the red carpet. Tegan and Sara Quin are identical twins, and they've been playing music together for ten years. Their songs are catchy, guitar-driven singalongs-really good girly stuff.

They've been rocking shortish hair for a couple of years now, but their current haircuts remind me of Joan Jett's early style. Tegan told WWD that it's all about convenience on tour:

"I want to be able to wake up 25 minutes before lobby call, get in the shower, blow-dry my hair, flat iron it, get dressed and pack my bag all in 25 minutes. And I can. I don't think that there is any reason to take hours to get ready."

The twins' fashion mullet isn't for everyone, but rocker girls can definitely pull this off. Your stylist should use a razor on your hair to thin out the bulk and add the little wispies, and you'll need a flat iron if your hair isn't naturally straight. Also, be sure to use conditioner, since razored hair is often more prone to splits, and it needs a little extra TLC!

Bella Donna: Dorothy Dandridge

It's time for this week's installment of Bella Donna. Last week I sung the praises of Joan Jett, and this week we're going back in time to talk about Dorothy Dandridge. The first African American to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, she was an immensely talented singer and actress.

For many young black women, Dorothy was one of the few Hollywood stars to look up to. But as you'll see, her life wasn't always as beautiful as she was. To view a gallery of this silver-screen beauty and to find out how to get her look, read more

You could say that Dorothy was practically born performing. As a child in the 1930s, she and her sisters toured the country as The Dandridge Sisters, and at age 13, Dorothy had her film debut in an Our Gang short. As she matured, she appeared in several films, but was mostly cast in stereotypical parts for African Americans. Rampant racism affected her solo singing career, too: She often found herself performing at hotels, only to discover that would not let her stay there because of her skin color.

Hollywood-and America in general-was a more blatantly racist place in the 1940s and 1950s, and leading roles for black actresses were scarce. But when Dorothy heard about an all-black film version of Carmen Jones, she successfully fought for the part. Her Oscar-nominated performance made her a star and landed her a spot as the first African American to appear on the cover of Life magazine. Other films followed, such as Porgy and Bess with Sidney Poitier.

Although Dorothy was finally a respected, famous actress, her off-screen life was tumultuous. As a child, she had been abused by her mother's partner; as an adult, she suffered from abuse at the hand of her second husband. Her only child was mentally handicapped, and she developed severe problems with alcoholism and depression. After a few attempts to regain her health, she was found dead of an overdose in her home. She was only 41 years old.

Dorothy Dandridge once said, "If I were white, I could capture the world." I think she's right. Her talent and beauty were remarkable, and a less prejudiced society would have allowed her to become an even bigger star. And her struggle to win quality roles serves as a legacy for the African American stars who have followed her. (In a coincidence, actress Halle Berry, the first African American woman to win a Best Actress Oscar, once portrayed Dorothy Dandridge in a TV biopic.)

To mimic Dorothy Dandridge's classic look, follow these tips:

Wear full but groomed eyebrows, with a defined arch
Eyes should sport neutral shadow and black liquid eyeliner
Dorothy favored bold, orangey-red lipsticks
She also drew small beauty marks on her face occasionally
For hair, go for soft, voluminous curls.
