2009 Primetime Emmy Awards: Kate Walsh

She may still be in Private Practice, but Kate Walsh is no slouch when it comes to appearing in the public eye. Her look was a lot more cheery and a little less sultry than it usually is on the red carpet tonight, though, where she went for an easy, close-fitting bob and lots of pink in the makeup department. It's pretty but perhaps a little more out for lunch than fancy awards show. What do you think? Is this look more Daytime Emmys than Primetime?

How-To: Kate Walsh's Late Show Look

When Kate Walsh made her entrance on The Late Show With David Letterman last night, my friend and I audibly gasped. Her super glossy, retro hairstyle perfectly complemented her bright lipstick. In all, the look was very Mad Men, so naturally I'm obsessed. Here's how to get the look:

Blow out hair with a side part, lifting at the roots. Follow with a big curling iron, making sure the barrel isn't too close to your roots. Use a hair spray that provides both shine and hold, like Bumble & bumble Shine Spray ($34).

Line the entire rim of the eye with black liner (it looks like she's wearing pencil to me, but if you've mastered something else, try that) and apply a light grey eyeshadow on the lid, just until the crease. Try Sonia Kashuk Powder Partners Eye Shadow Duo in Cocktail Hour 01 ($7.99). Use your regular black mascara.
Sweep on a hint of peachy blush on the apples of the cheeks, like Benefit Dandelion ($28).
Finding the perfect orange-based red lipstick can be difficult. Experiment by mixing shades you already have, or try Sephora Maniac Long Wearing Lipstick in 09 ($12), a bright orange with red shimmer. A lip liner will help the color stay put, but any neutral color should work to prevent bleeding. Just like Dr. Addison does.

Trend Alert: Side-Swept Updos

You weren't so fond of Katherine Heigl's side-swept curls a few weeks ago, but lately I've seen side-swept hair everywhere. Side ponytails remain to be a trend, but why not jazz it up a bit? Sweeping the hair to the side or front in an updo creates a modern style that's interesting and elegant.

To get this look, curl all of your hair with a curling iron or hot rollers first. Use a medium-strength texturizing gel, such as Frederic Fekkai's Coiff Bouffant Lifting and Texturizing Spray Gel ($23), for hold without the crunch. For a straight and sleek option, use a smoothing cream like Bumble and bumble's Styling Lotion $(23). Pin back to the side and set with a light spray such as Ted Gibson Beautiful Hold Hairspray ($28). For a healthy shine, complete either look with Ojon's Shine & Protect Glossing Mist ($28).

Do You Prefer Kate Walsh Better as a Redhead or a Brunette?

I didn't see this one coming, but it looks like Kate Walsh has dyed her signature red hair a deep, dark brown shade. I think it may take some time to get used to this look on her (a little harsh, no?), but hopefully in time I'll grow more fond of it. Which hair color do you like better on Kate?

This rare face shape belongs to some seriously sexy A-list stunners such as Katie Holmes, Kate Walsh, Jessica Simpson, Sandra Bullock, Paris Hilton, Mandy Moore, Demi Moore, Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

Things to keep in mind if you have a square face is that layered bangs that fall to or below your eyebrows are very flattering, especially if they are swept off to the side. Fringey and wispy bangs look great, too, since they will soften the edges of your face shape.

Cuts to avoid are blunt bangs or airy bangs that come to your jawline (a common look for a chin-length bob), as these types of bangs will only cause your face to look sharp-and not in the good way.

Who Looked Better in a Side Updo at The Emmy Awards?

I'm not so sure that I completely understand this hairstyle, but since both Kate Walsh and Heidi Klum usually look stunning, I am going to let it pass and even praise them for taking a beauty risk. Paired with their bold red lips and glamorous dresses, they stand out on the red carpet somehow seem to get away with this strange side updo. How do you feel about this hairstyle, and who do you think wore it better?

Do You Like Kate Walsh Better With or Without Bangs?

Out of all the great redheaded celebs, Kate Walsh's color is just right-it's not too brown and not too orange. Also, she never really seems to tweak it, which makes it look reasonably natural. She does, however, play around a little bit with different cuts. For example, we saw her on the left at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in June with heavy bangs, and then a month later she appeared at the ESPY Awards with a sleek middle part and no bangs. Which look do you like better on Kate?
