How-To: Kerry Washington's CFDA Makeup

At last night's CFDA Awards, Kerry Washington was the epitome of impeccable style. Check out how her soft watermelon-toned lipstick complements, not competes with, her warmer, orange-toned blush.

That, and she's achieved eyebrow perfection with the perfect balance of shape and color. While her eyes are heavily lined for dramatic effect, she creates a slight smokiness with taupe and shimmery pink shadows. Like this look? Check out my how-to when you read more.

Eyes: Apply a shimmering pink cream shadow to the lids, making sure the inner V area is covered. Try Clinique Quick Eyes Cream Shadow in Muffin ($15). After lining both the top and bottom lash lines with a black pencil, create a soft smokiness by applying a taupe shadow to the lids and creases, like Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow in New Mink ($20).
Cheeks: Add a pop of warm color by applying BareMinerals Blush in Tulip ($18) to the cheeks.
Lips: To finish off, apply a bright pink gloss to the lips, like CoverGirl Wetslicks Fruit Spritzers Lip Gloss in Watermelon Splash ($5).

2009 Independent Spirit Awards: Kerry Washington

Actress Kerry Washington seems to realize that you're never fully dressed without a smile. Along with that happy expression, she's wearing warm makeup colors, and a loosely waved hairstyle. Bright apricot blush, coppery eye shadow, and neutral lip gloss contrast with her cool, royal blue dress. Some smudgy black liner and highlighter under the brow bones bring the focus up towards her eyes. What do you think of Kerry's red carpet style? Is it stunning or just so-so?

Less Is More or More Is More?

I've gathered some contrasting photos where one beauty detail is more exaggerated or less exaggerated in each picture. Doing Drugstore: Kerry Is So Very . . . Nice

One thing I'm really loving is the way L'Oréal creates products around its spokesmodels. Take, for instance, this Wear Infinite Star Secret eye shadow quad ($7.15). These bronze colors are "Kerry's Bronzes" - as in the actress Kerry Washington - and although I haven't the foggiest idea as to whether she's had any input on the colors, they're very pretty either way. The four shadows all complement each other, and if you have trouble applying them, you can simply flip the package over for some easy-to-follow diagrams.

These colors would look gorgeous on a variety of skin tones, including Kerry's cocoa complexion and my fair visage. To see some pictures of the how it all looks, read more.

If you follow the diagram, this is the look you'll get. I brushed a little shadow along my lower lash line as an experiment, and swept on a bit of MAC Fluidline in Soft Black. (Also, yikes, it's time to break out the tweezers.)

And here are two other shots. At left is what I like to call The Angelina Stare, and then there's a little shut-eye action to show you what's on the lid.

The shadows last for most of the day, but my only complaint is that the color payoff isn't as intense as I'd sometimes like. Don't get me wrong, this is great for a subtle daytime look or, when worn with this style of eyeliner, for an evening out. But the shadow doesn't build much, so if you want a look that screams yoo-hoo, i am wearing bronze eye shadow, you'll have to look elsewhere. Still, I love the versatility of this quad - especially for the price! (And now I'm off to tweeze.)

How To Get Kerry Washington's Glam Gala Makeup

Kerry Washington looked radiant this week at the Women's Project's Women of Achievement Gala in New York City. I loved the way she paired a sexy smoky eye with a Spring- colored matte lilac lip to match her floral dress.

FACE: Begin by applying a cream concealer under the eyes and to any areas that are visibly red. Then, use a mineral powder foundation such as La Bella Donna Loose Mineral Foundation in Cafe and be sure to spread it evenly with a fluffy brush. Apply a little bit extra around the nose, to the chin and to the tip of the nose.
CHEEKS: Then, dust a little bit of shimmery baby-doll pink blush such as the new Diorskin Shimmer Star compact along your cheekbones. Use the silvery color on the left to highlight the very top of your cheekbones, the tip of your nose and your forehead (see how the light is catching those areas of Kerry's face).
EYES: By using a compact like Too Faced Liquif-Eye Shadow Collection this eye look is easy to achieve. First sweep the white shadow all over the lid. Next, take the black shadow and apply it with a light hand to the area between your lash line and the crease and blend well. Then use the pale pink shade (just under the white one) in the crease, and lightly dust it over the white to soften the look. Wet the black shadow and use it as eyeliner on the top lashes only. Finish with two coats of lengthening black mascara.
LIPS: Try a creamy lipstick like this La Bella Donna Mineral Light Lip Color in Tranquil Pink and skip the lip liner. If you decide to use a gloss, that's also okay - but as you can see, combining textures can look very sexy.

I am so used to seeing Kerry Washington with short hair that this long, sleek straight look is a a great surprise. I am a really big fan of hers, not only because we share the same alma mater, but because she's an amazing actress who is funny and has a warm heart. It doesn't hurt that she's so easy on the eyes, either!

Pictured below are three different hairstyles. From left to right we see her at the 2006 Golden Globes Afterparty with shoulder length hair and bangs, at the Cannes Film Festival with curls, and at last night's Hip Hop Honors with extensions. Which hairstyle do you find most flattering on Kerry?

Looks like Kerry Washington, Rachel Bilson and Amanda Peet decided to keep things simple Thursday night at the P.S. Arts Party event.
