Splurge of the Week: Kiehl's Body Cleansing Oil

My skin has been going through an oddball itchy phase. Ever the hypochondriac, I became convinced that the cats had fleas. They didn't, so I thought, "Oh no, I've somehow picked up bedbugs!" (I hadn't.) After running through a mile-long list of potential itch-causers, I decided to switch body wash to one that doesn't foam up and potentially irritate my skin.

You could probably use a variety of washes, but I went with Superbly Restorative Body Cleansing Oil ($27.50). It has organic argan oil (the buzzed-about Moroccan oil) as well as a beta hydroxy acid. Since it's an oil, it doesn't lather up like crazy. Instead, it gently washes away dirt without leaving my skin dry. Plus, the softly earthy scent is sexy instead of traversing into a "I just followed Phish around for three months" funk. Most important: no more itchy skin. Win! At $27.50, it's more expensive than most body washes, but a little goes a really long way - and the ability to go to sleep without scratching my legs these days is pretty much priceless.

Reader Review of the Day: Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15

In a few short weeks, I'm off to visit some friends who live right along the waters of Lake Erie, so I've got beach gear on the brain. After searching facial moisturizers with SPF protection, I came across Jennipoo's review of Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15 ($18.50), for which she calls an "excellent moisturizer for normal to oily skin." Here's what else she had to say:

I'm a huge fan of Kiehl's, especially their moisturizers. It's perfect, super lightweight, absorbs very quickly into the skin, and my skin hasn't had any reaction/break outs to it! If you have super dry skin, I'd get the Ultra Facial Cream, which I used in the Winter. It's nongreasy and moisturized for 24 hours (and that's a real 24 hours - not a gimmick they stick on the label).

Oh Man: Kiehl's Wants to Swap Shaving Cream With You

They've turned your trash into treasures. They've even asked you to guess how long it takes the longest-legged woman to shave. So leave it to the marketing team at Kiehl's to come up with something great just for the fellas. From Friday, May 29 (today!) until Sunday, June 7, stop into a freestanding Kiehl's store (not department-store counters) for the company's first annual Shave Swap.

All you have to do is bring in a men's shaving cream of at least four ounces (any brand will do), and you'll receive a full-size Ultimate Brushless Shave Cream in either a White Eagle, Blue Eagle, or Green Eagle formulation. Gentlemen customers will also be invited take part in a five-minute consultation to determine their skincare needs, after which they'll receive three complimentary samples. Not a bad deal, eh?

Kiehl's Turns Your Trash Into Treasures!

Do-gooders can do good at Kiehl's with the company's new Recycle and Be Rewarded! program. The next time you run out of one of its products, run (walk, drive, whatever) to the nearest location and bring that empty container with you. They'll take care of all the recycling and treat you in the process.

While you're restocking, you'll also receive a stamp on your reward card for each bottle you return. For your third stamp, you'll get a free Lip Balm #1 and, by the time you get to five returns, you can pick any item from the Official Kiehl’s Travel Collection. Rack up 10 and you get a free product of your choosing (that's $25 or less).

All you're doing is turning in your trash, and getting all these treasures! Ready, set, recycle!

Adrian Grenier and Erykah Badu Get Designing For Earth Month

Add "Bottle Package Designer" to actor Adrian Grenier's resume. To coincide with Earth Day, the multitalented star, along with the inimitable Erykah Badu, surfer Kelly Slater, and three students from Parsons the New School for Design, have collaborated with Kiehl's to launch four limited-edition designs of Superbly Restorative Argan Body Lotion ($55). All proceeds from sales of the lotion, which is bottled in 100 percent post-consumer recycled packaging, will benefit the Waterkeeper Alliance, an organization that preserves and protects community waterways from polluters.

Check out the gallery below to take a peek at their eco-friendly labels, which hit Kiehl's stores just in time for Earth Day on April 20. Good design, a smooth lotion, and a purchase that gives lots of money to help keep waterways clean all make this project one I can get behind.

Eye creams can get a little pricey, so they're a beauty item that you want to make sure you'll have around for awhile. Recently, reader Cmill38 reviewed Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado ($24.50), and here's what she had to say:

I love this eye cream. It's very light and refreshing. A little goes a long, long way so it will last. I don't really feel like my face is clean at night unless I have used my avocado Kiehl's. It also creates a little glow.

Kiehl's Travels Back in Time With Four New Essences

While taking a ride on a time machine might not be a reality unless you're Doc Brown or Marty McFly, Kiehl's has found a way for you to experience the past through your olfactory senses. This month, the 158-year-old company reintroduces old school essences with the launch of four modern-style Essence Oils With Roller Ball Applicators (each $25).

These highly concentrated scents can be worn alone or mixed together, and give a nod to the cult classics of yesteryear. They include: Musk 1921 (which was thought to be "too sensual" when originally formulated), Coriander 1946, Vanilla 1968 (often mixed with Musk), and Grapefruit 1976. Six additional scents will follow in the next few months. I've always been fascinated by Kiehl's apothecary stylings and it's nice to see them going back to their roots. With the recent Stila/Barbie collaboration, do I sense a possible retro tribute trend here? Perhaps we'll see some more blasts from the past in the future.

Brad Pitt Wants To Shower With You

Humina humina! As if it weren't enough to get close to Brad Pitt's lips, now he'd like to take a shower with you. Well, kind of. He's teaming up with Kiehl's to launch a new product, Kiehl's Aloe Vera Biodegradable Liquid Body Cleanser ($16.50). The body wash is free of parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, and dyes - and it's packaged in 100% recycled plastic.

But here's the twist: Brad isn't appearing in any ads, and Kiehl's isn't making a bundle of cash from this deal. Instead, 100 percent of profits will go to JPF Eco Systems, a green charity that Brad created with Kiehl's. WWD estimates that more than $1 million will go to support various ecologically friendly projects, beginning with Make It Right, the post-Katrina charity that helps build green homes in New Orleans. Brad's hands are all over the project, including the label that features his own handwriting.

It's nice to know that Brad's thinking of all of us when we're naked in the shower, isn't it? And it's even better to know that when the cleanser comes out in October, we'll all be able to return the favor while doing good.

Oh Man: Kiehl's Adds Two Newbies to Their Facial Fuel Collection

I guess I missed the memo, but apparently July is the greatest grooming month of all time for guys. First we heard about Bobbi Brown's new Yogi Bare Lip Balm and now Kiehl's is getting ready to launch two new items in their famed royal blue-packaged Facial Fuel Collection. The first product is a creamy and amazing-scented No-Shine Lip Balm ($8.50) and the second is an Anti-Wrinkle Cream ($35).

The lip balm is made from a blend of jojoba oil, apricot kernel oil, shea butter, and sweet almond oil to create a soothing, hydrating and pepper-minty fresh lip treat that feels creamy, yet has a completely matte finish. The hook is that it's for guys, but I kinda feel like Kiehl's products are unisex. Having said that, I wouldn't deny the special man in my life from scoring this lip balm, but he's definitely going to have to share it with me - yes, it's really that good.

The face moisturizer is oil free, lightweight, and it won't clog your pores. It claims to firm, tighten, and reduce the visibility of fine lines, while cooling your skin (something I think guys will appreciate postshave). It contains all kinds of goodness such as birch extract, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and horse chestnut to make the skin look more radiant and awake. Do these products interest you as potential gifts for Father's Day?

Product Review: Kiehl's Abyssine Eye Cream+

Back in January I told you about Kiehl's Abyssine+ line, an upgrade to its Abyssine antiaging line. About a month ago I picked up a little jar of the Abyssine Eye Cream+ ($32) to see if it lived up to the hype.

The Abyssine+ line is packed with antioxidants to fight early signs of aging, and it's still light enough in texture to use on combination skin. It's a no-frills product - creamy, yet light, and 100-percent fragrance-free. It goes on easily and is absorbed into skin quickly enough that I can put eye makeup over it about two minutes after application. If I go without makeup, my eye area looks dewy and fresh. I like it a lot, and a little goes a long way. I've been using for over a month now and there is hardly a noticeable dent in the product. Thumbs up from me.
