Trend Alert: Heavy on the Liner

OK, pencils down, now who's got the right answer? In this case, it's thick black eyeliner. Each of these women used heavy hands for their black eyes at the CFDA Awards. There's a blurry difference between heavily lined and smoked up, so let's discuss. Kirsten Dunst has the most outlined look as her stroke - even the bottom! - traces the entire eye on the lash line. Ashley Olsen, on the other hand, has equally thick lines, but she blurs the edges into a cat-eye shape for a sultry rock look. Lastly, Heidi Klum falls somewhere in the middle with slight smudges on the bottom, but more definition up top. Whose look do you like best . . . or do you think it all got out of hand?

It's all about being cool for Kirsten Dunst. I'm not just talking attitude, I'm talking her makeup palette choices. If you look closely, the actress has opted for some purplish mascara to top off this cool-toned look, full of shimmering lilacs on the eyes and a berry hue on the cheeks and lips.

In lieu of a crazy headpiece or dramatic hairstyle, Kirsten chooses a no-fuss updo with face-framing pieces. What do you think of this pop-of-purple look? Does it get your stamp of approval?

Beautiful Bangs For Your Face Shape, Part I: Round

Welcome to my series on bangs for your face shape. In the past, I've covered blush colors for your skin tone, moisturizers for your skin type and eye shadows to enhance your eye color. Now with celebrities like Kate Moss and Carmen Electra making bangs look sexier than ever, I thought some information about which bang styles compliment your face shape might be helpful.

The first part of the series is about round faces. Celebs such as Cameron, Carmen, Christina, Kirsten and Kate are just a few famous femmes with round faces. (That's a lot of K sounds-I wonder if the shape of your face is correlated to the sound of your name!)

If you have a round face, you'll first want to start off with a haircut that flatters your face shape and then move onto the "fringe benefits" later.

What you're aiming for is long, side-swept bangs or wispy fringes. Both help take attention away from the sides of your face, creating an arch which will help elongate your face. Stay away from super-choppy bangs or short layers that add volume to the sides.

Which Color Lipstick Looks Best on Kirsten?

Kirsten Dunst has never been a head turner for me, but she definitely has a real charm about her. Her look is also very versatile. With a few makeup tricks she can go from being a blonde haired blue eyed California girl to a 40's glamazon. I like the middle shade of lipstick on her the best. I'm not a huge fan of lip tints, but I think this coral color is actually very flattering on her. What do you think?

How to Apply Blush For Your Face Shape: Round

Round faces like Kirsten Dunst's tend to be petite, so blush can look like an all-over wash of color instead of a natural flush if you don't have the correct application techniques. My friend Joselyn swears by these steps for the perfect blush:

Use a fan brush, which is great for accurate application on smaller faces, to apply blush in a boomerang shape, with the tips right under the outer corners of your eyes and the fullest part of the arc under the inner corners of your eyes.
Continue using the fan brush to fill in the boomerang.
Use a medium-sized brush to blend your blush, making sure not to sweep the color any lower than the bottom of your cheekbones and no further out than the ends of your eyebrows.
Apply a touch of blush along your upper temples and to the center of your chin to give your face a little more definition.

You might remember my interview with celebrity hair colorist Johnny Ramirez, who has styled the likes of Victoria Beckham, Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Pompeo, and Amber Valetta - just to name a few. Also among his celebrity clientele? Whitney Port, the cordial, soft-spoken, lanky blonde from MTV's The City.

Whitney will soon have an old friend in New York, as Ramirez, who works at the famed Chris McMillan Salon in LA, is about to go bi-coastal. The first week of each month, the talented colorist will also be waving his magic color wand at Serge Normant at John Frieda in Manhattan. Check out what he had to say about Whitney's hair color, along with tips on preventing hair color from fading when you read more.

If you like Whitney's hair, but a trip to NYC or LA is not in the cards for you, Ramirez has advice for achieving her multidimensional hues that you can take to your colorist. It's even recession-friendly, too.

To start: Whitney's hair color is light brown/dark blond near the top, and it fades into a light blond towards the end. To get the look, "grow out as much of your roots as you can," Ramirez advises. "I know it will be a little bit of a process, but focus on keeping it really soft and natural at the top. . . Have very minimal highlights at the top, and keep the ends light," he advised. "It's very low-maintenance."
Multidimension: When she first started The Hills, Ramirez says, Whitney's blond hair lacked depth, which washed her out. And now, "It's beautiful, healthy, and it looks natural," he says. "I saw baby pictures of her. It's exactly what she had when she was a kid."
Layer it up: Ramirez advises using a toner and gloss to keep the color from fading. "After about two to three weeks, the gloss starts fading away," he says. "Then, about two to three weeks after that, the toner starts fading away." By the time his clients come to see him again, their color still looks fresh. "It's time-consuming, but it really stays," he adds.
Refresh: "Stop by [your salon] in between hair visits for a gloss," he said. This keeps the color rich, and it's cheaper than a full color treatment.

Byron Williams Brings Out the Stars

Hollywood makeup artist and hairstylist Byron Williams hosted a soiree in Beverly Hills on Thursday to celebrate his new salon, and the swanky, spa-tastic event was star-studded to say the least. Not surprising, considering that Williams - a veteran of the renowned Prive Salon in LA - counts Kirsten Dunst, Rachel Zoe, and Lindsay Lohan among his clients.

A Few Tips for Red Lips

Red lips are having a moment right now, but a classic red lip never really goes out of style. I used to be intimidated by wearing them, but now they're in regular rotation-and they're especially festive for this time of year.

So when Molly R. Stern offered some tips on creating the perfect red lip, I jumped at the chance to share them with you. Molly is CoverGirl's celebrity makeup artist, and she's touched the faces of celebrities such as Ellen Barkin, Heather Graham, Renee Zellweger and Kirsten Dunst.

Focus on one thing. "This look is all about the red lip," Molly says. "So keep the rest of your look simple with sheer coverage; let your natural skin tones shine through."
There really is a red for everyone. Molly recommends CoverGirl Outlast All-Day Lipcolor in Ever Red-dy. "I also love CoverGirl TruShine Lipcolor in Cranberry Shine," she says, "because it goes on sheer and has blue undertones, which will complement any skin tone." (Blue undertones also help to make teeth look whiter.)
Make your lips pop. To add a rosy glow, apply a cream blush on the apples of your cheeks.
Go easy on the eyes. A lengthening mascara in black-brown or brown will give your eye subtle definition and keep the focus on your luscious red lips, Molly says.

I'd also add that the key to wearing red lips is confidence. If you think you can pull it off, you can.

Bella Book: The Hair Color Mix Book

How many times have you tried to color your hair at home, only to be "rewarded" with spotty highlights and a hue that's not quite right? (Or is that just me?) If you need a little help with your hair color, you might like The Hair Color Mix Book ($24.95), out next week.

Author Lorri Goddard-Clark is a salon veteran who has worked with celebrities including Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Brad Pitt, Kate Winslet, Heidi Klum, Madonna, Kirsten Dunst, and Drew Barrymore (who wrote the book's foreword). While it'll cost $150 and up to have her highlight your hair at Neil George Salon in Beverly Hills, the book shares her techniques and tricks for a lot less money.

This book isn't for women who want a quick, simple solution for hair coloring. Instead, it's for anyone who's willing to mix different colors and try various application techniques to get the perfect color. (Goddard-Clark admits that buying all of the necessary supplies can be a little costly, but over time, it will be less expensive to color your hair at home.)

The book is separated into three sections: techniques, recipes, and post-color care. You'll definitely need to read the first section thoroughly to understand Goddard-Clark's techniques; they're not difficult to follow, but it's important to understand how to mix different dyes to get the right look. One quibble: The instructions are clear, but I wish the book used photos instead of illustrations to demonstrate the proper application techniques. But in general, if you're committed to learning how to do more than apply all-over color to your hair, consider this your textbook.
