DIY Spa Treatment: Rose Mint Foot Scrub

Right now, there's not enough food in my house to make anything but mac 'n' cheese, but there is enough to make a DIY salt scrub (so maybe I can spend my pedicure money on groceries). Salt scrub tends to exfoliate more than sugar, so it's better for rough areas like feet, and mint is refreshing and soothing. The rose gives it a great scent and pretty color.

Here's what you'll need:

1/2 cup of coarse salt (i.e. sea salt, kosher salt, margarita salt)

Olive oil

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon rose flower water (I picked up this one at a Middle Eastern store)

1 rose

3 stems fresh mint

Step 1: Combine salt and rosewater, but don't mix.
Step 2: Shred or cut the mint leaves into small pieces, add to mixture, and use a blunt object (I used the back of a screwdriver) to muddle (basically, bash and twist the mint into the mixture so the scent and oils are released).
Step 3: Take 3/4 of the petals off the rose and do the same.
Step 4: Add 1 tablespoon olive oil and mix. Feel free to add more, but be careful - it gets too greasy very fast!
Step 5: Use the rest of the rose as a garnish, either keeping the bud whole or adding bigger chunks of petals.

Store in a mason jar, an empty tub of another product, or good ol' tupperware.

Happy Hanukkah Beauty Treats

Tonight marks the start of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights. I've gotta tell you, I love this holiday. The menorah is beautiful, the food is scrumptious, and how catchy is the dreidel song? If you want to add to the celebration with a few beauty treats, you're in luck - I've found three.

The scent of Say It With Suds bath and shower gel ($14) is unusual but pleasing. It's supposed to have a cinnamon doughnut scent, but to me, it smells more like the cinnamon buns at Ikea - kinda savory more than sugary sweet. It bubbles up well, and I was happy that it didn't dry out my skin or make it itchy.

This Hanukkah lip balm ($4) has cute retro packaging along with a beeswax-based balm. I haven't tried it, but it's scented like Sufganiyot, the jelly-injected doughnut that's often eaten during the holiday. Again with the doughnuts - not that I'm complaining.

Finally, there's this honey-scented Menorah soap ($12). It's vegan, kosher, and handmade in Los Angeles. The woman behind the soap says she made it after noticing a lack of Hanukkah-related goodies, and her quote is priceless: "My grandmother would've just pounded her chest and said it was a shanda if I hadn't done something."

DIY Spa Treatment: Super-Sexy Beach Hair

Fabrice Gilli, my amazing hairdresser and Creative Director of Frederic Fekkai Soho, has divulged one of his quick and easy, at-home recipes for beautiful beach waves. Since you already know how to create this look yourself, and you're aware of the various beach hair products on the market, thanks to Fabrice, you can save a few pennies and stock up on sunscreens instead! Here's an inexpensive way to attain sexy beach waves on a miniscule budget.

Step 1: Take an empty and clean spray bottle and fill it up with eight ounces of water.
Step 2: Add two heaping tablespoons of kosher or sea salt to the water and shake.
Step 3: Mix a teaspoon of your favorite hair gel to the saltwater solution and shake it once again. This will give hair a little bit more texture.
Step 4: Spray a liberal amount onto wet or very damp hair and do not brush through-finger-comb only if necessary. Scrunch hair in your hands to help curls form, or just leave it be and let it air dry naturally.
