Get Hot (Pink Lips) Like Eva Mendes

We here at Sugar HQ have decided that Eva Mendes never looks anything but absolutely beautiful. At a recent Calvin Klein event in Milan, Eva proved that the rules are meant to be broken. While her skin and hair coloring are more in the warm-toned family, the actress still managed to pull off a traditionally cooler-toned hot pink lip that had just the slightest glimpse of a coral undertone. Call it a bright poppy shade of sorts. What I like most about this look is that it's decidedly not a just-stepped-out-of-the-mall circa 1984 kind of effect. It's fresh, alluring, and very flirtatious.

Steal Thandie Newton's Pretty Red Lipstick Look

Thandie Newton never fails to look gorgeous on the red carpet, and last night was no exception. Her look at the 2012 premiere was incredibly simple and easy but with tons of impact. On her eyes, she paired a thin line of pewter eyeliner with a taupe eye shadow brushed from lash line to brow bone. Then, she dusted a sheer wash of coral blush from the outer apples of her cheeks up to her temples, and finished up with a bright red lipstick with complementary orange undertones. You all know how much I love a good Chanel lip gloss, but I hadn't tried Chanel Rouge Allure Laque Luminous Satin Lip Lacquer ($32), so I was excited to see that reader gooz1231 had. Her review, though, makes me want to head down to the store and try one right now. She says:

"This lip product from Chanel (think a hybrid between a lipstick and gloss) is absolutely amazing. It is moisturizing and highly pigmented with a nice gloss. In addition, it wears pretty well. While at $32 it is a little pricey, the quality is unlike any other lip product I've tried, both high-end and low-end. I highly recommend this and suggest anyone to splurge on one of these babies."

Has Heidi Klum Made the Perfect Lipstick?

Did you know that Victoria's Secret Beauty is one of the best-selling brands in the country? Yep. Who knew? A revamp of the line's VS Makeup means it's worth a new look, and it probably doesn't hurt that Christian Siriano and Heidi Klum are collaborating on makeup collections for the brand. Heidi's latest endeavor is a collection of makeup inspired by her travels to the spiritual city of Varanasi, India. To that end, the jewel-toned packaging is gorgeously draped in golds, pinks, and purples.

I've been playing around with some of the products, and one thing stands out above everything else: Heidi Klum Perfect Lipstick ($16) in Exotic Spice. It's pretty much the perfect versatile shade of nude pink, and the moist and creamy formula has just a hint of shine. It works for a natural, low-key look as well as a glamorous nighttime one, and it just feels nice on the lips. I'm not absolutely crazy about the chocolate scent, but your mileage may vary. Either way, this has become my go-to shade - even if I don't look like Heidi with it on.

Matte Lipstick Is a Big Trend, So Why Are There Only Two Choices at the Drugstore?

I'll always love Sephora and elegant department stores, but I'm also intrinsically opposed to having to go one of those places to pick up on-trend makeup. My latest pet peeve is matte lipstick. Matte is everywhere; suffice it to say it's the lip and skin texture of the season. And yet at the drugstore today there were only two matte lines in the whole place, and what little stock there was had clearly already been rummaged by desperate fashionistas. Of the paltry choices there were, the matte I prefer is the Sally Hansen Moist & Matte in Charmeuse ($7). It's the true red my volunteer at the right is wearing. It doesn't dry your lips out, and it tastes like mint, plus the applicator's pretty cool. On the downside, the pigment's staying power is unimpressive, and it definitely doesn't stay on when you drink and eat. OK for a shopping trip or going dancing, bad for a romantic dinner or drinks after work.
