Emo Style Makeover Is a Hot Topic

Embarrassing confession time: I was a teenage emo kid. Granted, this was in the Paleolithic era, so the scene was more about zine-trading and listening to Rites of Spring than, say, buying a Tokio Hotel tee at Hot Topic. Maybe that's why I am alternately fascinated and amused by today's adolescent emo kids. I admire their punky creativity, but the old lady in me can't help but think, "Oh man, you're going to regret those 6-gauge ear plugs someday."

Still, I love to play around with unusual hair colors and makeup, which is why Emo Style Makeover is such a fun time-waster. The kiddy game lets you take a fairly unassuming doll-faced cartoon and transform her into a pierced, wild-haired rocker girl. There are a few drawbacks - you can't change the skin tone, for instance - but if you want a no-commitment way to play dress-up, pop in the My Chemical Romance and have at it.

The fashionable Audrey Hepburn starred in quite a few ugly-duckling-becomes-swan films such as My Fair Lady and Funny Face, but she wasn't the only one to get the Pygmalion treatment. You've seen it before: Typically there's the "nerdy" girl who gets the full-makeover treatment, becomes popular, and learns some valuable life lessons. (Weirdly, nobody notices her beforehand - as though anyone would think Rachel Leigh Cook was all hideous underneath those geeky glasses in She's All That.) Which makeover do you love? According to a recent study, British women change their look an average of 26 times during the span of their lives. That's a lot of makeover action.

Bellissima! Taaz Online Makeovers

Ever wonder what Reese Witherspoon might look like if she suddenly turned Posh? Now you can. Last night I ran across a brand-new website called Taaz. Goofy name, great concept. Taaz is an online makeover tool, but it's the first one I've used that allows you to make so many detailed and accurate-looking changes to your appearance.

It's very simple to use: Just upload a photo of yourself, preferably with your hair pulled back. You'll then need to click on your photo (don't worry, the site guides you to the right places) to define the outline of your lips and eyes. From there, you can change hairstyles and hair color, lipstick, gloss, eye shadow, mascara - all of which can be sized and customized to your specifications. For instance, you can control the glossiness of any given lip color, and you can resize the hairstyles to fit the dimensions of your hair.

It's a lot of fun, but one feature makes this tool incredibly useful, too. You can browse different makeup products by color, and Taaz gives you specific makeup names, brands, and shades. This lets you try out colors from Revlon, Laura Mercier, MAC, and other beauty brands - which could save you time in the long run. I find that it's also a great way to play around with all of the colors to see which work and which don't. (Sadly, the hair color I'd hoped to try out this Spring just doesn't flatter! Today on Oprah: Makeover Madness!

Set your TiVo if you're obsessed with hair, because today's Oprah features 100 hair makeovers. Technically, it's 101, since Oprah cut Hilary Swank's hair so she could donate it. But who's counting? Oh right: me.

Seeing makeover results never gets old. Check everyone out for yourself. The most interesting thing is that the women are ordinary, everyday people-the kind of people you'd see walking down the street. I am dying to know what these people thought of their new 'dos-because while some look really happy, others totally have poker face. Let me know if you, too, get lost in the photos-I easily spent half an hour clicking through them.

Beauty Byte: Cover Girl Launches Virtual Makeover

Cover Girl has unveiled a new online-makeover feature called Makeup Mirror. The tool allows you to upload your photo and try on products-virtually, at least. You can also chat with an expert if you have questions on application, products, or shade slections. After you find your perfect look you can then purchase your favorite products online. This is definitely a dream come true for anyone who finds the makeup aisle daunting. The only catch? Makeup Mirror only works with PC platforms, forcing all of us with Macs to apply our Cover Girl the old-fashioned way.

It's Top Model Makeover Time!

Last night's episode of America's Next Top Model was my favorite part of the cycle: Makeover time! Seriously, is there anything more entertaining than seeing the contestants get their hair chopped, colored, and shaved? Well, maybe the drama that ensues is more entertaining.

Some highlights: Heather looks more or less the same, which-mark my words-is a sign that she'll stay "in the running towards becoming America's Next Top Model" for quite some time. Sarah (the "plus-sized" girl who's all of a size 8, maybe 10) got a flirty blonde cropped 'do. Bitchfaced Bianca was supposed to go blonde, but because of her hair damage, it was out with the Wahl and off with her hair. (She's wearing wigs from here on out.)

Some of the makeovers were big improvements, I thought, but others made me wonder what was going on. (Janet's dyed black hair is a little too Romulan, isn't it?) Take a look at all of the girls and let me know whose transformation you like most!

Ever wondered what you'd look like with Angelina's updo? Or J.Lo's lowlights? Now you can preview your preferred cuts and colors with In Style's new Hollywood Hair Makeover. The tool lets you upload your own picture (or use a model with a similar face shape to yours), and from there you can browse the encyclopedia of celebrity hairstyles. You can also customize the hair color, highlights, and lowlights to see what you'd look like as a redhead, blonde, brunette or anything in between. I've spent a nearly-embarrassing amount of time playing around here, and it's a lot of fun to see which celebrity hairstyles are the most flattering. (Turns out I look great with Ashanti's layered cut. Who knew?) Have fun!
