Rarely one to go sleek and simple, Mary-Kate Olsen has all kinds of volume at the roots — maybe a bit too much so — but ends with simple waves at the bottom. Let me be the first (and likely the last) to say, wouldn't it be awesome if there was a bumpit buried up in there?
But I digress.

The stars came out in full force for the Metropolitan Opera gala, and Mary-Kate Olsen chose a glamorous look for the occasion. The bronzy eye makeup, tousled curls, full brows, and bright pink lipstick are an throwback to Desperately Seeking Susan-era Madonna — but updated for today, of course. Do you like this change of style for Mary-Kate, or do you prefer her more traditional look?

Mary-Kate Olsen has the soft-and-tousled hair down pat, giving her the look of effortless waves. Her makeup puts all of the oomph on the eyes, with nearly nude lips and just a hint of blush to warm up her cheeks. Do you like this look on her?

Three women, three different ways to get down to the root of things. Jessica Simpson, Beyoncé, and Mary-Kate Olsen each have distinctive styles, but they share one thing in common: A refreshingly low-key attitude when it comes to touching up their roots. Each of these blonde stars can afford to have that "I just left a salon" kind of color, but letting a few roots show feels thoroughly modern — particularly in an economic cycle where pricey highlights are a luxury that many people can't take.

Project Runway's Blayne would have had a heart attack if he had a ticket to Proenza Schouler's show, and not because of the jumpsuits. His style icon, Mary-Kate Olsen, sat in the front row. And while I wouldn't call it a heart attack, I'm kind of obsessed with her braided hairstyle — is it braidlicious or a miss?

Last night at the fancy 2008 Costume Institute Gala in New York City, the women arrived wearing fabulous gowns adorned with sensational accessories. Some of their beauty looks were favorable, and some left little to be desired. One of the trends I noticed was the semi-laid-back approach to hair.

Oh, Mary-Kate. First the headband from hell, then the invisible lip look, and now this? I love MK for taking risks with her style, but let's be honest: If you were her buddy and saw her at the Costume Institute Gala, wouldn't you expect her to confess that she'd totally forgotten about the event until 20 minutes ago, and that she rolled out of bed and got ready in the taxi on the way over?

The Tribeca Film Festival has officially started, and the past couple of nights have kicked off in high gear. And by "gear," I mean, lots of A-list stars partying in Chanel (the host of last night's party). Mary-Kate Olsen arrived in a dark dress and dark, coppery, smoky metallic eyes contrasted by pale chalky lips.

I think Pop is being kind when she calls Mary-Kate Olsen's look "a touch ridiculous" at last night's charity event. Her willingness to take risks is admirable, but this headband is too much. It's like a tiny, black velvet version of those neck rests for travel.
