Coming Soon: Prescriptives All Skins Mineral Makeup SPF 15

Prescriptives is getting ready to release its first ever, vitamin and gemstone-enriched loose powder called All Skins Mineral Makeup SPF 15 ($32.50). Available in July, this medium-coverage foundation contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide to ensure that you are both UVA and UVB protected. It's also formulated with mattifying agents to absorb oil, sweat and stickiness during the humid summer months. Lastly, it's water-resistant and free of oils, talc and fragrances.

The gemstones (rose quartz, amethyst and calcite) also give the powder a little bit of sheen, which helps from making your skin look too dry. The powder itself is finely-milled and when you press down, it feels as soft as silk. I've tried it in Warm Light, which is too dark for my fair skin, but it's going to match perfectly after a few self-tanner applications.

Applying it is easy, too. Just tap a little bit into the cap, dip the new Round Buff Brush ($30) in the powder, give it a quick blow to remove any excess powder, and use a circular motion to apply it all over your face. Concentrate on your t-zone and any other oily areas. All Skins Mineral Makeup will be available in 18 shades and claims to be suitable for all skin types. Think you'd like to try it?

Product Review: La Bella Donna Loose Mineral Foundation

I know it's hard to believe, but this Loose Mineral Foundation by Bella Donna ($50) was my first introduction into the wonderful world of mineral-powder foundations.

I know a lot of you use mineral foundation, but if not, here's the basic idea: The seemingly magical makeup comes in powder form, but when you sweep it across your face, you get the finish of a foundation. After a favorable encounter with La Bella Donna's Capri Lip Palette, I decided to try this foundation, and it definitely makes me want to explore the mineral-makeup category more. It's pretty incredible how much coverage and smoothness this product provided with just a quick once-over with the brush.

La Bella Donna Loose Mineral Foundation gave my face a very even and velvety finish at first - almost dewy. But as I went about my day, the dewiness turned into oiliness. My skin tends to get a bit oily, so maybe it's not entirely the makeup's fault. Overall, I liked the consistency and the results.

Has anyone had this problem with other mineral foundations? If so, tell me your experiences. Which one should I try next?

Doing Drugstore: Maybelline Mineral Power Foundation

It can be hard to find a drugstore foundation that blends and covers well, so I was surprised when Maybelline Mineral Power Foundation did that and more. I've been less impressed with other products in the Mineral Power line (the powder foundation did nothing for me), but the foundation is clearly another story. The formula, which has an SPF of 18, glides across skin and covers imperfections without hanging on dry skin. The foundation doesn't budge and dries with a soft finish. With sixteen shades to choose from, you ought to be able to find a color that works for you. And one plus for me above the department store brands (I used to be a huge fan of DiorSkin) is that Maybelline's foundation is virtually scentless. That and the $8.29 price tag.

Everybody loves finding a foundation that matches their skin tone to a T, and it's even more satisfying when that faultless shade is just under the $10 mark. Recently reader Autumns_Elegy reviewed Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Foundation ($10) with a SPF of 18. Here's why she liked it:

It matches my skin tone almost perfectly so I don't need to wear a lot to even out my skin. Being perfume-free means I don't get the midday itchies when I wear it for long periods of time, which is awesome when I'm at work. The only downside is that sometimes the foundation erupts out of the bottle when you open it. It's fairly wasteful, as I don't want to wear quite that much.
