Trend Alert: Fuss-Free on the Red Carpet

It's Summer and apparently celebrities, like the rest of us, want to take it easy - even at a big red carpet event. In the past few days alone, Molly Sims, Chuck's Yvonne Strahovski, model Bar Rafaeli, and actress Charlyne Yi have all gone with unstyled hair and barely-there makeup that looks a lot more normal-girl than Hollywood starlet. They're totally gorgeous, of course, but they're so low on drama that some of you think it's inappropriate for a premiere. I'd say this is smart thinking on the part of women who know there's nothing cool about melting into a puddle of lipstick and foundation, but would you like to see more natural-looking stars all year 'round? And do you think we'll see even more lovely ladies try this look, or is it for the young, beautiful, and perfectly complected only?

Trend Alert: Light, (Almost) White Nail Polish

With the matte nail trend going full force, it's all about polishes with white, off-white, and nearly white tones. While it has the low-shine finish that's so very of-the-moment, it's not a chalky, dull look, but it's not an overly sheer or glossy look, either.

The always-fashionable Gwen Stefani has been spotted wearing a more opaque version during her current tour with No Doubt, and other celebrities, such as Paris Hilton, Rachel Zoe, and Molly Sims, have taken part - each with her own twist on the trend.

To get the look, try Essie Nail Polish in Blanc ($8), a snowy white; OPI Nail Polish in Alpine Snow, a matte white; or make your own light polish into a matte one with Essie's Matte About You ($10). See more celebrities who have worn variations of this white/almost-white trend below.

The Met's Costume Institute Gala: The Models

Last night's theme at the 2009 Costume Institute Gala was "The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion," an exploration of how models have inspired and projected fashions throughout recent years. Of course, my coverage of this event would not be complete without a gallery of models who walked the red carpet. (Here's why some big names didn't show up). Trend Alert: New Year, Long Waves

OK, I know it's nothing all that earth-shattering since long waves have been in fashion long before the Farrah Fawcett days. But this New Year's Eve, it was all about the soft cascading curl. Whether it was a more-refined look like Ashlee Simpson and Eva Longoria Parker or tousled and undone à la Molly Sims and Chloë Sevigny, the look was still sexy - and a little more inspired than pin-straight locks. Want some loose waves? Keep a large-barreled (at least one inch or larger) curling iron open and wrap your hair around the barrel for a few seconds and release. Is this the iconic hairstyle of the 2000s? We have one more year to find out, but I'm betting yes.

How-To: Molly Sims's Wispy Updo

Messy, textured updos are all the rage these days, and Molly Sims was in on it at the recent CNN Heroes ceremony. Lorenzo Caldaron, a stylist with Warren-Tricomi Los Angeles, created this beautiful, easy look. The good news for you: he says that this look's quite easy, especially for a reader who's not trained in hair. "Make it look fun and flirty, softly pulled back and messy or use less texture for a more smooth, classic look," he said. "I's very versatile and up to you. If you think about it too technically and overwork it, it's going to go to a whole different place and look too done."

Kick off this look with clean, shampooed hair and get his step-by-step instructions when you read more.

Apply a polishing gloss (e.g., Redken Glass) to wet hair and blow dry until about 75 percent dry.
Activate texture with a product like Fabricate and then just rough it up with your hands.
Use a round brush and dryer towards the front fringe and sides of the hair so it's extra-smooth there.
Build more texture with a one-inch barrel curling iron, making loose waves throughout the whole head and add a light hold hairspray (He used Workforce).
Split the hair from ear to ear so there's an upper section and a lower section then, with that lower section, take two smaller sections and tie into a large knot and secure it with bobby pins – very freehand.
Leaving the sides out, just lay the textured top part and build everything over that knot. The style's like a wider chignon shape back there so just cross, twist, play with it and do your own thing. His tip: use long hair pins because you'll need fewer and they're more secure.
When you're all done pinning, set style with a firmer hold hairspray (like Warren-Tricomi Superhold Hairspray).

How-To: Molly Sims's Fashion Rocks Makeup

At last week's Fashion Rocks event, Cami Vaught, The Balm makeup artist, created a luminous, sun-kissed look for model/actress Molly Sims. "The overall effect was natural, but sexy; dramatic, but not overdone - perfect to go with the gorgeous Donna Karan that she wore," said Vaught.

Face - For foundation, Vaught used Balm Shelter Tinted Moisturizer ($24) with a light dusting of Sexy Mama Translucent Powder ($18) to set. For under the eyes and as an eyeshadow primer, she applied Time Balm Concealer ($17).
Eyeliner and Mascara - For drama, Vaught lined Sim's eyes with a black, water-resistant eyeliner called Pick-Up Liner in Romeo ($18) underneath the upper lashline to make them stand out. The look was intensified with several coats of Two Timer ($19) mascara.
Eyeshadow - "I used a mix of bronzes, browns, and golds to create a sexy, understated take on a 'smoky eye'," said Vaught. A base was created with Luscious Lani ($15) from lashline to browbone. Next, she applied Shameless Shana ($15), a warm bronze, in her crease and on the bottom lashline. To add some intensity, Caught in the Act Courtney ($15), a deeper shade of brown, was used on the outer corners of the crease. This shade was also used to define the upper area of the eye by smudging it as close as possible to the lashline. Finally, Mischievous Marissa ($15), a luminous gold, was added the lid and blended. "Using a lighter, luminous shade on the lid helps open up the eyes," she said.

Eyebrows - To highlight and emphasize the shape of her brows, Time Balm Concealer ($17) was used once again. A light gold mineral shadow was applied as a highlight in the inner corners of her eyes and under the browbone. Vaught used No Money No Honey ($14) to achieve this effect.
Cheeks - A stain was applied to the apples of the cheeks as a base in Stainiac in Prom Queen ($14) and Hot Mama Blush ($18) was swiped on top to make the color "pop." For more definition, Sims's cheeks were contoured with Bahama Mama Bronzer ($18) under her cheekbones, on top of her forehead, and along the jawline. "Just think of making a '3' on each side of your face - starting at your forehead, going down to your cheek bones, and finishing on your jaw line," Vaught said.
Lips - "Since her eyes were the focal point, we went with a soft, pink, glossy lip," she said. First, Plump Your Pucker Lip Gloss in Water My Melon ($14) was applied and then Balm Shelter SPF Lip Gloss in Girl Next Door ($14) was layered over it for extra shine.

How Do You Style Your Hair When You're Wearing a Hat?

Hats are a great accessory for hiding your hair when you just don't feel like fussing. I typically throw my hair into a low ponytail or secure it in the back with a loose braid, especially if it's day-old, since it holds better. Some girls wear hats with their hair down just because they think it looks cute, even after they've spent time styling it. I'm curious: When you put on a hat, how do you usually wear your hair?

How-To: Molly Sims' Cocktail Party Makeup

Despite the heat in New York yesterday, model-turned-actress Molly Sims struck a few flirtatious poses with a cool cocktail at the National Survey of American Cocktail Culture event.

I absolutely love her laid-back Summer braids and her raisin-hued eye shadow. Molly has light hazel eyes, and as we know, purples really make green eyes pop. Since this is a festive daytime look, you don't want to wear too much makeup on your skin. I've gathered a bunch of great product suggestions below for those of you that want to re-create this look on your own.

FACE: Start by applying a creamy concealer to any red or dark areas and follow with a lightweight creamy foundation with a touch of shimmer. One of my favorites is Stila Liquid Illuminating Foundation in 20 Watts. Only use a little bit and blend to a flawless finish (don't forget about your jawline) with a makeup sponge.

CHEEKS: Molly has a sweet summertime glow from the help of a creamy blush. Try applying something like Vincent Longo Water Canvas Blush in Morning Tender on the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards and outwards towards your hairline. Also, dab a touch on your nose to create the illusion of a sun-kissed flush. Next use a giant fluffy brush and add a touch of bronzer to your forehead, temples, chin, and nose.
EYES: This eye look is easy to achieve and all you need are four products. The first is a shimmer champagne eye shadow for underneath your brow bone and your eyeliner under the lower lash line. The second is a raisiny-sable-colored eye shadow for the crease. I love this GloMinerals GloEye Shadow Trio in Mulberry for green or hazel eyes. Next, line your upper and lower lashes with a deep aubergine or black eye liner. Finally, apply two coats of black mascara.
LIPS: Apply a true-pink lipstick such as Dior Addict High Shine Lipstick in Backstage Pink all over your lips. Since it's creamy, sheer, and has a shiny finish you don't even need gloss (unless of course you want it) - have fun!
