Candy and flowers versus a barbecue and some gadgets. When it comes to days honoring mom and dad, the greeting card companies and department stores would have us believe that things are evenly split. But a new survey finds that the holidays aren't quite even-steven.

According to ManoftheHouse.com, 80 percent of the men surveyed think Mother's Day gets more attention than Father's Day. The men aren't necessarily upset about this finding, but 60 percent do say that they share the responsibility for childcare equally with their spouse. I received an email from a reader of my blog, who was having difficulty trying to integrate her traditional china into a modern setting. She is a hip grandmother who happens to love a traditional table. She wanted to do something to appease her daughters who always complained that her holiday tables were too fussy and "old-fashioned." Working with a set of vintage teacups and saucers picked up at a resale shop, I tried to create a tablescape that melded the traditional with the modern for a Mother's Day tea that she could replicate at her own home. In the end, I think I was able to bring a little bit of sass to a lady with a whole lot of class.

Reese Witherspoon Steps Out With a Foot Injury For Mother's Day With Her Kids and Jim

Reese Witherspoon returned from Australia over the weekend just in time to spend Mother's Day at home with Ava, Deacon, and Jim Toth in LA. The foursome visited church yesterday and she stepped out after the service holding hands with Deacon and wearing a removable soft cast on her left leg. Reese Witherspoon wore black peep-toe stilettos alongside her Water For Elephants costar Robert Pattinson during a photocall in Sydney on Friday, so it seems the injury is fairly new. Rob managed to depart from Oz unscathed and he was spotted heading out of the country with his guitar in hand later. Reese will have time to recuperate her foot with her next film, This Means War, not scheduled for release until later this year, though she may need to take a break from her usual daily jogs.

Open House: How Have You Thanked Mom With a Home or Garden Gift?

Happy Mother's Day! As I celebrate today with my family, I've been thinking back to ways we celebrated Mother's Day when I was a kid. One of my most vivid memories of a Mother's Day past was the year my siblings and I said "thanks" by completely re-organizing all of her kitchen cupboards. I think that we were 12, 10, and 8 at the time, and while I'm sure she appreciated having her Tupperware neatly stacked and organized, I'm not so sure that she liked having entire drawers' contents moved from place to place. Still, being the amazing mom she is, she simply smiled and gave us huge hugs for the "help" we'd offered her around the house.
Since that time, my go-to gift for my mom has been a new flowering plant for her beautiful and extensive garden. Honeysuckle vine, butterfly bushes, and coneflowers have all made their way into her garden over the years.
