Doing Drugstore: A Cheap, Flattering Pretty in Pink Lip

For Halloween, I was supposed to be the crafty prom dress-sewing Molly Ringwald from Pretty in PInk, but plans fell through. Although I was kinda bummed, at least I'm all set for Halloween 2009, right? When I was browsing for the perfect shade of lipstick to complete my '80s ensemble, I also didn't want to break the bank in the process. So when I came across N.Y.C, I was a little skeptical, but the price was right.

I made a quick purchase of the brand's Ultra Last Lip Wear in Mauve Gold (412B) ($1.99), and wouldn't you know? It's now one of my new go-to shades.

Is it long-wearing? No. Do I think it would be flattering to many? You bet. While the shade's name might suggest purple tones, this one is more of a pink, but not in bubblegum kind of way. With a hint of gold glimmer and a touch of neutral brown, this cheapie lip color is great on its own, or layered under a nude liner. Finally, a bit of British holiday in the heart of New York City! Heidi Klein started in London in 2002 with a vacation-centric store. The founders, Heidi Gosman and Penny Klein both appreciated how difficult it was to shop for holiday essentials and a well fitting swim suit. The vision of the company is to "Help women look fantastic and to get organized before a holiday."

The boutique, which has opened on the Upper East Side in NYC is reminiscent of a relaxed, calm and chic high-end vacation spot. The walls are white and accented with beautiful sheer white curtains which make you feel like you are in a cabana. They sell: women's swimwear, beach cover-ups, kaftans, flip flops, tops, sarongs, hats, sunglasses, bags as well as pieces for men and children.

There are several styles of bathing suits available such as: bikinis, one pieces, tankinis and maternity suits. There are also two fabulous mix and match lines called Essentials and Provence which we all know is great for those of us who don't have perfect proportions! What I love about the suits is that they provide full coverage in the rear, but are still quite posh and sexy.

The suits are available in bold and fun prints as well as nautical stripes and classical colors. And if you are shopping for something other than the Heidi Klein Private Label, you can also browse items from: Vilebrequin, Eres, and Melissa Odabash. The boutique also sells the brand's own candles for $54, a whipped moisturizer for $48 and a sea salt scrub for $45.

Ricky's Goes From Manhattan to Mouse Clicks

If you're a New Yorker, no doubt you know Ricky's NYC. And if you haven't heard about the beauty store, now's your chance to get the virtual experience, as the company has joined the e-commerce world. Now the rest of the country can experience the beauty bounty without the crowded atmosphere - and the stores can get pretty packed.

The chain, which specializes in hair care, cosmetics, and unusual fashion accessories, has somewhat of a cult following. It's a bit Urban Outfitters, a touch Spencer's, a little upscale apothecary, and your local beauty emporium combined. Ricky's carries everything from the goofy Burger King Flame Body Spray ($4) to the classic Mason Pearson Popular hairbrush ($151) to the odd Bacon Bandages ($6) to professional hair color. SJP Channels Carrie B. For Her New Fragrance

Can't get enough SATC? You'll like this news, then. Sarah Jessica Parker is launching a new scent, called SJP NYC, in conjunction with the release of Sex and the City 2 next May. And as you might expect given the launch date, SJP says this one is more about her SATC character then it is about her. “A large part of the inspiration was what I now understand to be people’s impressions of seeing Carrie Bradshaw walk down the street," she told WWD."We wanted to create a party in a bottle." (I always thought Carrie looked more harried and anxious in the opening than ready to party, but maybe that's just me.)

For those of you interested in hitting the club with this one, the scent is a fruity floral, and the packaging (and low price points-15 ml is $25) makes it seem like it's designed to skew younger. SJP NYC has top notes of Italian mandarin, white osmanthus and strawberries, a big, floral middle with gardenia, honeysuckle, mimosa and rose, and a drydown with sandalwood, vanilla, rum, and musk. What do you think? Will this one be a as lovely and coveted as her other two scents, or do the notes suggest Carrie's not nearly as talented a perfumer as SJP?

Are You Tired of Stinky Stores?

The other day, after it was revealed that Abercrombie & Fitch spent more than $3 million on pumping one of their colognes, Fierce, through their stores, many of you wrote in to say how little you loved the scent being wafted through A&F. And now, the New York Post is reporting that a new NYC Hollister store at the corner of Houston and Broadway is being protested by people made miserable by fragrance being pumped from the store out onto the street. A similar situation occurred with a Diane Von Furstenberg store last July, and it seems that instances of people getting angry about, and sick from, the overuse of scent machines just keep getting more frequent. Do you think these are isolated instances of overproduction in the smell department, or are these scent machines generally a problem? And how bad would it have to be for you to protest one of these stinky stores?

A Few Beauty Tidbits From Gwen at Spring Fashion Week

It's 2010 Spring Fashion Week, and one of the first designers to show her collection was L.A.M.B.'s Gwen Stefani. For her show, the models wore MAC makeup on their faces, Vaseline's soon-to-be-released Sheer Infusion Body Lotion ($6.25 to $9) on their skin, and a trendy, opaque white shade of nail polish from Dashing Diva called NYC Fleet Week ($8). Lucky for us, Pop caught up with Gwen in NYC and asked her about her popular Harajuku Lovers line, for which Snow Bunnies ($30) just launched.

"Sunshine Cuties is coming out in the Spring," Gwen dished. And by the sound of it, there's something else up Gwen's perfume sleeve. "There's always something in the works. I do really enjoy doing the fragrances," she added. I guess we'll have to wait and see what she's got cooking in the scent department. In the meantime, I'm off to get my white nail polish trend on.
