A Dude From Texas Wins a Nars Makeup Contest

Nars just wrapped its Makeup Your Mind contest, which asked website users to do their best versions of 12 faces from the book of the same name. The winner, Kale Teter of Texas, is about as cute as they come. This guy did some truly fierce takes on the Nars looks, and in a competition stacked with talented people, he was still the standout. His prize is a chance to join the Nars crew during Fall 2012 Fashion Week next February.

"The Nars competition has become really important to me," Teter says. "The amount of support I've gotten from fans across the country has been amazing, and winning means the world to me. I feel like I've come quite a long way from the shy boy in Panhandle, Texas." Sweet and humble too? No wonder this guy's the winner. Let's hope we get to see more from him soon.

Nars Gets Robotic in Its New Eyeliner Film

We previewed the new Nars Larger Than Life eyeliner at New York Fashion Week, and now you can get a closer look with a new short film. Interview editorial director Fabien Baron directed this spot, which features model Emily Baker languid beneath two mechanical arms. First they twist and turn, moving over her body; then, they precisely apply a perfectly even line to each eye. The overall result is a tense, unusual, and wholly artsy way of looking at liner.

Backstage Report: Phillip Lim Fall 2011

Punk's Not Dead, at Least Not at Mandy Coon

Drawing on references ranging from Art Deco to punk rock, Mandy Coon's makeup look is certain to be among the season's most unusual. Lead makeup artist Francelle created intensity through a boldly lined eye, using Nars's Larger Than Life eyeliner in black and white shades. We previewed the mechanical pencil backstage, and we're pretty much counting down the days until it's out this fall. "It doesn't budge," Francelle said. "And it sharpens to a point, so you get a precise line." (All true.)

Hair, created by Pasquale Ferrante of Ion Studio, echoed the designer's own short, fruit punch-red style. After applying generous amounts of Rene Furterer Mousse Stylisante, he affixed hair extensions to cover models' right eyes. Since only one eye was visible on the runway, only one needed makeup - just the kind of off-kilter concept that made the show so much fun to see.

Honor Goes For a Red-Hot Look

The makeup look at Honor, Giovanna Randall's fledgling clothing line, was a beautifully bright mashup of three separate decades. "The collection has a '70s sensibility, but in an American sportswear way," lead makeup artist James Boehmer said of Randall's sophomore collection. "We didn't want the makeup or hair to look '70s, because then the clothes would, too." Instead, he dipped into the '90s for an "anarchistic" look, adding touches of club-kid style of the early '80s.

The touchstone of the look, an orangey-red eye look, was inspired by desert colors - no eye shadow necessary. Boehmer used Red Square Velvet Matte Lip Pencil as a base, then blended two Nars blushes (Exhibit A and Taj Mahal) to create a look that contrasted with the rich teals, pinks, and yellows of the collection. The key to pulling off such bright shades? "Wear it with confidence and strength," says Boehmer.
