Trend Alert: More Nude Lips at the VMAs

Looks like the nude lip trend is hotter than ever this year. Just a few weeks ago we saw lots of pale pouts at the Teen Choice Awards, and here they are again at this year's VMAs. Celebrity attendees such as Britney Spears, Nelly Furtado, Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Jennifer Garner, Rosario Dawson, Nicole Scherzinger and Hayden Panetierre all wore a neutral, flesh colored lip. Here are a couple of great nude lip colors that make for great additions to your collection.

The bright lip trend is in full throttle. Are you on board? Still feeling like it's not for you? Here's my insight into dipping your toe in the bold lip pool! The other night I went to a friend's for dinner and a screening of My Week With Marilyn. In honor of the film (and Ms. Monroe), my gal pal, Whitney, showed up with a beautiful cherry lip (Guerlain's #529) and matching nails (Sephora by OPI's And a Cherry on Top). Keep in mind, Whitney is a neutral/pinky gloss girl.

Seeing her with scarlet lips was striking and felt totally fresh. She looked so great that I found myself asking why she doesn't do it more often. Whit's reply: "It's not special if you do it all the time." So true, and on closer inspection I noticed both her lip and nail color had a touch of gold. How very smart of her, as gold softens. A red lipstick may seem very thick and garish, but with a tinge of gold it seems to have more depth and feel very wearable. Every woman has a bright shade that will make her look sensational. How to Wear Glittery, Shimmery Makeup Like a Grown-Up

New Year's is the perfect time to experiment with shimmer, but too much glisten can look a little tacky and/or immature. So for a more grown-up approach to sparkle and glamour, check out the two great tips below.

Go for the gold: Apply metallic pigment or shadow to your eyes, suggests Ana Cruzalegui from UK-based lash brand We Are Faux, and pair it with fluttery falsies like their Kitsch lashes ($20). "For added drama without looking like a Studio 54 regular, dab some fine glitter on the center of your lid - just a touch will do the trick," Cruzalegui advises. For the perfect hint of glitz, try MAC Pro Glitter in Reflects Antique Gold.
Pretty pairings: Amp up your metallic look with rusty gold and deep purple shadows for an edgy take on the smoky eye, and round things out with shimmery nude lip gloss. Poppy King Designs a Lipstick Line For Boots No7

With a successful lipstick line under her belt, as well as collaborations with Kate Spade and J.Crew, Poppy King is reminding us why she calls herself the Lipstick Queen. This month, Boots No7 will release a collection - The Magic of Lipstick - which King created for the company. Almost a year in the making, it consists of seven lipsticks and seven matching glosses. "The texture is moisturizing, yet has traction," King explains.

King, who has been a fan of Boots No7 for years, says she discovered the brand during her travels to London. While designing the line, King went through the company's archives, drawing much of her inspiration from the 1930s. "I wanted to use the silver that was on the Boots packaging then, and the shape and styling of the number '7' reminiscent of the '30s," she said. She also hoped to capture the era's enthusiasm for lip color. "I wanted to ease women back into lipstick - the Boots' customer needs something that works, something that is elegant, and something that is low maintenance." What We're Sweet On: No-Waste, Glossy Lipstick

For Rachel Zoe's Spring 2012 presentation, models wore a warm, sun-kissed makeup look featuring the Nude shade from Exude's lip creme line ($29). And after wearing the same hue for a few days, I can say I'm hooked.

The applicator tip is actually not a traditional slanted lipstick. Instead, it's a crystal-clear dispenser where you control just how much or little lip color you want. And any amount that you don't need can easily be retracted back into the tube with a reverse twist. As for the formula, it's that perfect balance of gloss and lipstick, so you basically get two products in one.

The lip creme is available in nine colors, and Rachel, who is the spokesperson for the line, counts Cranberry as her favorite. The formula even includes anti-aging omega-3 and -6 fatty acids, goji berry, and vitamin E, which add a feel-good element to this cool new lipstick.

Nude Lips (and Missing Pants) at Rag & Bone

As is the case every season, Revlon Global Artistic Director Gucci Westman created a makeup look for Rag & Bone. It's a show dear to her heart, since she's not just a makeup maestro, but is also married to the line's codesigner David Neville. Backstage, she said that she initially toyed with doing a strong lip look for the Spring 2012 show, but ultimately went with a nearly nude lipstick instead. "I just wanted it to be super easy," she said, adding that the neutral makeup palette didn't compete with the clothes. (Get the look with Revlon Super Lustrous lipsticks in Demure and Silver City Pink.) And it's clear that Westman is a fan of the collection. She confessed to falling in love with a pair of Rag & Bone trousers, then taking them home - and unbeknownst to her, they happened to be destined for the runway. "David called me in a panic yesterday," she admitted. "Busted! How embarrassing is that?" In the end, all was well: pants were returned, the models looked fresh, and Rag & Bone looks destined to continue its string of enthusiastically received collections.
