Pantene Goes Back to the '80s in This Funny or Die Flick

Pantene is going retro in more ways than one. The hair care brand is bringing back some of its discontinued products, and it's simultaneously heading back to the '80s in this Funny or Die video. Catch allusions to movies like Risky Business, Working Girl, Pretty in Pink, Sixteen Candles, and The Breakfast Club (oh, Molly Ringwald!). And no all-in-one movie spoof could exclude beauty trends of the past like big hair, feather headbands, and over-the-top blush. Now all we need to make our '80s nostalgia complete is a pair of fingerless gloves and a Walkman.

Shower Sex: Everyone's Doing It. Also, Other Findings

Pantene just released the results of a recent survey on women's showering habits, and the results suggest that cleaning up may be the most quotidian thing people use the space to do. Most shockingly, the survey found that a whopping 65 percent of women asked had used the shower for a "romantic encounter." Apparently, everyone is a lot friskier than you'd think. On the other hand, though, 93 percent of these same women indicated that they prefer to shower alone, so we're guessing the "romantic encounters" aren't that awesome. Naomi Watts Shares Her Natural Beauty Tips and Tricks

Naomi Watts became the new face of Pantene's Flat to Volume collection last month, and yesterday she celebrated the appointment with a kickoff party in New York. She took the stage to speak about her latest honor and also introduced a short film about Pantene's Beautiful Lengths program, which encourages women and men to chop off and donate their locks to make wigs for cancer patients - impressively, over 20,000 real hair wigs have been donated to the American Cancer Society so far. We have a behind-the-scenes look at Naomi's shoot for Pantene, and she told us all about her beauty routine, the products she can't live without, and how she likes to keep makeup and hair care easy and quick! Naomi said:

On the one beauty product she can't live without: "I have to wear mascara or I have my eyelashes tinted because my eyelashes are completely blond. And my eyes just disappear if they're not framed well."
On how she changes her beauty routine for Summer: "Loads of sunscreen, just loads of sunscreen. The humidity just makes my hair curly, definitely and I just kind of go with that."
On her day-to-day hair routine: "It's not very much. I don't have the time, skill, or interest, really. So even before having kids but now it's really shrunk down to a bare minimum. That's why I expect a lot out of my shampoo and conditioner. But I will, if I'm doing it myself, use the triple action mousse. And then if I'm going to work and I know that I'm going to get hot irons all over the place then I'll use a little bit of the heat protector and that helps."
On picking up hair tips from working with pros for years: "You would think so, right? But I just have never done my own hair. I can't even blow-dry it. I'm a ponytail kind of girl. The best one for me is just the scrunch. Because I actually don't mind the look of, not unruly, but beach-y looking hair, slightly undone. I don't like big bouncy hair."

On what she does to look fancier to go out: "On my own time, I'm never wearing foundation. Even at night I'll just put lipstick and mascara and rouge and call it a night."
On how she came to work with Pantene: "I just got a call saying they were thinking about me and I was excited. I just thought, 'Wow, I didn't ever think I had good hair so why would they choose me?' And I think that's the whole point is that everyone should be able to have good hair. If it's well-treated, you too can have the volume and shine and I've got fine hair. So the product line that's specific for my hair type works very well with it. [You have to] stay consistent; it's not a magic potion that one uses and then overnight will have extremely different hair. It's a commitment. Eva Mendes and Naomi Watts Named Pantene's New Spokeswomen

Eva Mendes and Naomi Watts both have lustrous hair, which is why they've just been named celebrity ambassadors for Pantene. And in an interesting twist of fate, Eva recently succeeded Naomi Watts as the face of Thierry Mugler Angel.

Eva, who will back the line's Breakage to Strength collection, said in a statement, "The amount of torture I put my hair through with flat irons, blow dryers, and curling irons leaves my hair extremely damaged. With Pantene I can use all of these tools and still keep my hair healthy." In turn, Naomi will be supporting the Flat to Volume collection and said of her new gig, "Since I became a mother, the time I have for myself has shrunk dramatically. Also, I have never been able to do my own hair. So I am thrilled with Pantene because the quality of the products helps me get the volume I want with very little effort at all." I haven't watched Nightline since the Ted Koppel days, but this segment is a decent look into the business of hair care. Reporter Sharyn Alfonsi visits the research and development facilities of personal-care giant Procter & Gamble, showing viewers the tests that have gone into the reformulation of Pantene. Although the segment often feels more promotional than investigative, it's nonetheless a rarely seen peek into the scientific side of beauty - including a look at P&G's amazingly powerful microscopes. Worth a look.

Using Pantene May Give Kids Clean Drinking Water

If you're a stalwart Pantene buyer, next time you go to restock, consider purchasing through the brand's online store. Now through the end of February 2011, Pantene is donating 10 cents from every purchase made at its online outpost to the P&G Children's Safe Drinking Water Fund, which provides PUR packets to mothers in places where water may be contaminated. It may not be as substantial a portion of proceeds as companies like Kiehl's or Max Factor regularly donate, but given what an enormous market Pantene has, it's no small change.

We Put Our Hair Under a Microscope!

Oh yes, I am looking fine these days - or at least my hair is. Earlier this year, Procter and Gamble invited me to tour their headquarters in Cincinnati. Among the sights that intrigued the science geek within: a scanning electron microscope. These high-powered microscopes are used to measure minuscule items, and P&G uses theirs to analyze hair texture. That research went into the reformulation of Pantene hair care, which now comes in formulas that target fine, medium-to-thick, curly, and colored hair.

While in the lab, a P&G scientist snipped off a few locks of my hair to be analyzed under the microscope. What you see here is an up-close look at a single strand. It measures 68.7 micrometers in diameter, so it's classified as fine hair. Disappointingly, the hair damage includes "slight cuticle edge chipping," but it's cool. My inner Ms. Wizard is still excited, and the mild damage means there's just one more reason to use conditioner.

Bret Michaels and Pantene Form Unholy Partnership

Well, well, well. Look what the cat dragged in. Today, Pantene held a press conference with Bret Michaels announcing a new "reality star"-themed contest to celebrate Pantene's rebranding. The winner will get to be in a commercial and will score VIP access to one of Bret's concerts and a, uh, "tour" of his Rock of Love bus.

Last night, we Bellas were actually joking about how we wished Bret would be the new Pantene spokesperson. The laughter quickly died from our lips when we discovered just how close we were. If you're interested in spending some quality time with Bret and getting a taste of reality stardom yourself, you just have to make a video explaining why you're the next Pantene spokesmodel and then send it in. Pantene Gets a Makeover

If you find the eternal sameness of the Pantene bottle comforting, then you're in for a rough time. The brand is giving all of its packaging and marketing an overhaul. The new bottles will be shinier, more colorful, and differently shaped than their predecessors.

What's more, they won't be arranged in the usual way on store shelves. Instead of having all the shampoos and conditioners together, all the products for a given hair type will instead be in the same area, including styling products like mousse. Pantene is the most popular shampoo brand, and it's been Bella readers' favorite in the past. Do you think this change was necessary?
