Oh Man: Patrick Dempsey Dishes on His Skin

Maybe you remember from my So I Married a Makeup Artist quiz that Patrick Dempsey is married to Jillian Dempsey, a hugely successful makeup artist. Oops - just gave one of the answers away. I've always thought of the actor as impossibly sexy, warm, and charismatic, and when I was invited to a blogger-only call to discuss his new fragrance, he was all that and more. Instant crush!

Jillian, as Avon's Global Creative Color Director, undoubtedly has some advice for the dashing star, and when I asked him what beauty or grooming advice his wife shared with him that he uses everyday, here's what he had to say:

"Oh my goodness. When does [the advice] stop? I think more men, particularly from my generation, are using a lot more product just because it's a great way to take care of yourself for the future. The big thing is sun damage if you're outside a lot, so she's always telling me to put my sunblock on. That and taking care of my skin. . . After all, she's the one who has to look at me all day!"

Witty and in-the-know on the importance of sunscreen. They don't call him McDreamy for nothing.

Fragrance Review: Patrick Dempsey Unscripted

Back in April, I told you about Patrick Dempsey's collaboration with Avon. "Not another celeb fragrance," I thought. Flash forward to present day and Patrick Dempsey Unscripted ($32) has arrived. And it's surprisingly delightful, unexpected . . . dare I say, McSexy?

The fragrance is reminiscent of classic colognes, but with a modern, crisp feel. You might even say it could qualify as unisex, somehow managing to have a substantive, yet light, airy feel all at once. I nearly plotzed when I read that some of these adorable leading men color their hair so that their gray doesn't show. Apparently the double standard about aging is starting to crumble. Wouldn't it just be nice if society would let men and women grow old gracefully and naturally already?

Soon, Men Everywhere Will Smell McDreamy

Man, is Avon on fire or what? First it announces an Ungaro fragrance deal, then a Marimekko makeup collection, and now it's getting up close and personal with McDreamy. The brand has signed Patrick Dempsey to a fragrance deal, meaning that he'll not only smile pretty for advertisements, he'll also be involved in the development of the scent itself.

Jillian Dempsey, his wife of nearly nine years, is Avon's Global Creative Color Director, which probably made the deal go smoothly. In a completely smooth and entirely natural-sounding statement, Dempsey said:

"This is an extremely exciting opportunity for me to work with Avon, a brand I have long respected as a global powerhouse with a lot of heart and soul. The brand reaches every corner of the globe with more than just high quality products; it creates economic empowerment for women through its earning opportunity, and has an excellent reputation for corporate philanthropy through their Avon Foundation. My wife Jillian has enjoyed her experience working with Avon, and I look forward to joining the family as well."

The yet-to-be-announced fragrance will debut in November, so expect a full-on Dempseyfest around the time that Grey's returns for a new season. You know, every time I post about Avon, someone complains that it's a dorky company - but I think that argument is getting harder to make, no?

Not too long ago, I was on a call with celebrity makeup artist Jillian Dempsey, the global creative director for Avon. While providing tips for lipstick application, the wife of hunky actor Patrick Dempsey made an observation with which I definitely agree: most women naturally gravitate toward makeup items in one particular color family. This got me to thinking. I'm somewhat of a peaches and cream girl, myself, but tell me about which category that you typically prefer, using Revlon lipstick's palette as our inspiration. Six Lipstick Tips From Jillian Dempsey

You'll know from my So I Married a Makeup Artist quiz that Grey's Anatomy's Patrick Dempsey is married to none other than celebrity makeup artist and Avon Global Creative Director Jillian Dempsey. And yesterday, I sat in on a call featuring the talented lady, who has worked with Kate Winslet on her cherry-lipped Golden Globes look, along with her shimmery-eyed Oscars style, too.

Over the next few months, Avon will be coming out with a few new lip products (more on those later), but first, I've got some tips from Jillian for making your lips stand out. Find out what they are when you read more.

The "it" color: For Spring and Summer, you can't go wrong with a coral shade, or variations of coral, like pink and orange tones. Of course, nudes and naturals are always excellent choices, too.
Follow the line: One of the biggest mistakes women make is creating a hard line with their lip products. "For best results, blend your lip liner with a touch of lip gloss so there are no hard edges showing under your gloss," she says.
Consider the shape: If you have thinner lips, a dark berry tone will only make them look smaller. Go with a neutral tone for fuller looking lips à la Angelina Jolie.
Play up the pout: When applying a lip plumping product, like Avon's new Utra Color Rich Extra Plump Lipstick ($6), "To complement the look, go for wide eyes with lots of black mascara and keep cheeks neutral so lips stand out," advises Jillian.
Sheer genius: Create a sheer effect by using your fingers to dab on your lipstick.
Choosing a shade: When selecting a shade to wear, Jillian looks at both eye color and what the person is wearing as her guide. She also mentions that it's important to wear what makes you feel comfortable, and that most women easily gravitate toward what colors naturally work for them. Call it women's intuition, if you will.

Beauty Byte: Reese Enters the Bloomin' Fragrance Biz

When it comes to fragrance launches this year, Avon has had quite the star-studded journey. Since last June, the impressively affordable cosmetics brand has launched Christian Lacroix Noir, Courteney Cox-endorsed Spotlight, and Patrick Dempsey's Unscripted. And now, as a two-year Avon global ambassador, it's Reese Witherspoon's turn.

The new fragrance, dubbed In Bloom by Reese Witherspoon ($34 to $59), makes its official debut in November, and features top notes of Georgia peach, crisp greens, and tea leaves; middle notes of magnolias, star gardenia, and night-blooming jasmine; and base notes of cashmere woods, hypnotic florals, and amber wood crystals. Packaged in a rounded glass bottle with an elaborate flower atop, the Oscar-winning actress chose to monogram the champagne-toned box and limited-edition silver charmed bottle. "I monogram everything because I am Southern - it’s a compulsion," she quipped to WWD.

Inspiration behind the sensual, romantic scent came from Reese's Southern background and her 9-year-old daughter Ava's opinion. "I asked her which one smelled most like me." She also drew upon other family memories for insight. "Definitely gardenia is a big thing for me because my father - every Mother’s Day or on my birthday - would buy small bouquets or corsages for my mother and I," she added. "I thought you just pick a fragrance and it’s easy. But there were all these different levels of creating a scent that were new to me, but really fun and exciting," said the fun-loving star. Flower Power Makeup Part I: Cheeks

Cosmetics companies are in full Spring mode. That means, flowers, showers, bronzers and lots of new colors. Since the post about Clinique's Fresh Bloom Collection was such a big hit, I thought that you would enjoy a new series on pretty Spring makeup embossed with flowers.

Jillian Dempsey for Avon Signature Sheer Glow All Over Face Powder, $8, is great for tired looking skin. It's both a blush and a bronzer and will add instant warmth to anyone.

Stila Rouge Pots, $20, are a super light air-whipped formula that glide on really sheer and blend easily. They are for the gal that's into a very natural, flushed look and who doesn't like to feel like she's wearing a lot of makeup.

These rouge pots go on wet and dry as a powder. Apply with your fingertips and blend well. Their best selling color is called Lotus. All in all there are six shades to choose from.

Valerie Beverly Hills Sheena of the Jungle Bronzer, $55, is for the lady who is looking for a deeper tan. For this you are going to need a large kabuki brush! Just swirl and pat all over your face, shoulders and decolletage. And how cute is this daisy compact? Me likey!
