There are many times when tossing that hair back into a ponytail is just the easiest option, particularly during the warmer months. But, do you ever get bored by the same old, same old?

Herbal Essences stylist to the stars, Charles Baker Strahan has already shared with us a fresh haircut idea for Spring, and now, he's got some ideas on making your ponytail stand out. "Ponytails can be very chic. It is all about where you place them and the texture you have in the hair," he says.

"Stick-straight hair begs for a very high pony or a very low one, whereas I like a middle placement for more natural or wavy textures," says Strahan. Feeling more adventurous? "I enjoy seeing small braids or twists (in an odd number) on someone with a natural/wavy texture because it adds romance to a midrange pony," he added.

As far as high ponytails are concerned, Strahan likes adding three cornrows above the brow for an edgier feel. What's your favorite option for this go-to style?

Drew's Just That Into Her Big Ponytail (and You Can Be, Too)

She's just that into being blonde, and once again a fan of big hair, as Drew Barrymore attended Monday's premiere of He's Just Not That Into You with this full ponytail. I'm betting she got some help with that volume, but I've thought up tips to make your hairstyle bigger than ever... without hair pieces or extensions!

Form your ponytail, then find out the key tips to creating this style when you read more.

Applying a volumizing mousse like Fructis Volume Inject and/or spray (John Frieda Luxurious Volume Lavish Lift Root) to dry hair to create body.
Make waves using hot styling tools – personally, I think hot rollers work best – by curling small sections of your hair at a time to maximize fullness.
After the curls are in and rollers are out, take small pieces of your hair and wrap around your finger with styling wax to separate hair and add even more body by gently combing hair towards the roots as well.

How-To: Create a Looped Ponytail in Two Minutes

My sister has a full-time job, twin boys, and not a whole lot of time to spend on her hair. So, she asked me to help her create a look that was fun, easy, and - most importantly - fast.

Since braids and twists are trendy and flattering on just about everyone, I used that concept as my inspiration. And as she worked from home over the holidays, I got out the basics: a brush, some hairspray, and a ponytail holder. Here's what we did:

Spray hair with hairspray to create a smooth surface. Next, pull hair back into a low ponytail.
Using your fingers to separate hair above ponytail holder, create a hole.
Lift ponytail up and over ponytail holder, right into the hole you created. Push hair all the way through.
Pull ponytail outwards to tighten, and you're finished.
Optional: Loosen twist by lightly separating with fingers for a softer effect. Add a barrette à la Nicole Kidman for a fancy finish.

Trend Alert: Super Slick Ponytails

With wispy tendrils falling all over the place nowadays, I figured it was high time to give the bangless babes some love, too. I'd say polar opposite of the bohemian up-do would be the tightly together ponytail. Just this week alone, I spotted these three ladies wearing similarly sleek looks that focus on their face, makeup, and bone structure.
To bring this trend home, grab a high hold gel, paste, or pomade and comb your hair back so it's fairly smooth. Apply the product and then again comb it, this time fixing it up in your ponytail. Wrap and tuck part of your hair to hide the elastic, then style it wavy like Scarlett Johansson and Ashanti or stick-straight like Kim Kardashian. Lastly, I'd choose fun dangling earrings to lessen the severity of the 'do, but whether you leave your ponytail straight or curled is up to you.

How To: A Plump Ponytail

The plumped-up ponytail is basically the same as a regular pony, but if you're looking for a unique way to give it your own special oomph, you can add a little bit of height to the front and some volume to the back.

Step 1: Apply a palmful of mousse into towel-dried hair. Use your hand to scrunch your hair to give it more volume.
Step 2: Then, back-comb or tease your hair at the crown until you reach your desired height and gently brush it over to smooth hair out using a boar-bristle brush.
Step 3: Now it's time to gather your hair into a ponytail and secure it at the back of your head just above your eye brows with an elastic band or cord.
Step 4: Tease the ponytail and then apply a light hold gel to the ends. When you are finished, mist your entire head with hairspray and scrunch a little bit more before it dries.

Last night at Hollywood Life magazine's 10^th Annual Young Hollywood Awards, country singer Taylor Swift and reality star Adrienne Curry both arrived with low-slung side ponytails. This variation of the side updo, a popular look from the 2007 Emmy Awards, is a little more youthful and relaxed. Taylor's hair is longer so it cascades down her shoulder while Adrienne's sits neatly on top. Which look do you like better?

How-To: Kate Beckinsale's Bouncy Ponytail

You have to look posh if you're going to hang out with Posh and Becks - and Kate Beckinsale has managed to do so with a sexy take on the ponytail. I am a big fan of Kate (who else thinks she looks like BellaSugar?) and while she has amazing and thick enviable hair, most likely she's wearing a fall or an extension piece in the back of her slightly teased hair for added fullness.

STEP 1: Tease the crown of your hair slightly so that you have some fullness around your face when your hair is pulled back.
STEP 2: Brush your hair back with a boar-bristle brush to smooth out the surface. Then, gather your hair into a mid-to-high ponytail and secure it with an elastic.
STEP 3: It's time to add the hairpiece. You'll want to use about an 8-12-inch ponytail extension that matches your hair color. (I prefer to use the kind that comes with a jaw clip on the inside for easy attachment.) Clip the extension into the little dimple that your hair makes just above your ponytail then gently brush it through to integrate your natural hair. To ensure that the clip is secure, add in a few bobby pins underneath for extra support if necessary.
STEP 4: Lastly, lightly mist your entire head with hairspray.

Backstage Beauty: Armand Basi

Yesterday afternoon, I checked out the Armand Basi fashion show at the historic Banqueting House in London. Just like the grand landmark setting, the behind-the-scenes area was really something to admire. This was by far the most organized and spacious backstage space I have yet to encounter this week.

The models had a private changing area away from peeping photographers and media, and hair and makeup each had their own fully-equipped workstations. I spoke with lead hair stylist Paul Hanlon who collaborated with Armand to come up with big hair to complement the voluminous clothing. The look they went for was, as he put it, "young, fresh, teased, and fluffy - not lady-like."

Apply a generous amount of thickening spray to the mid-lengths and ends of dry hair and work it through using your fingers. Do not brush hair.

Next, back-comb the crown and the sides of the hair starting from the roots to the mid-length in sections. Then, massage the sides of the hair to fluff it up.

Using your hands, gather the hair into a mid-head ponytail and secure with a strong elastic. Begin to back-brush the ponytail using a Mason Pearson brush for added fullness. Tip: if your hair is very straight, use a curling iron on the ends of the ponytail to give hair extra body.

Lastly, mist a medium-hold hairspray all over the hair.
