Mermaid waves never go out of style, even at Fashion Week, so it's not a surprise that for the Proenza Schouler show, Frédéric Fekkai lead stylist Didier Malige was inspired by California surfer girls' tousled hair. The look was totally sexy, a little wild, and surprisingly easy to do. (And if you're so inclined, you can even spritz on a little purple and green temporary hair color to mimic the style worn by some of the models.) It was the final day of Fashion Week, and while I'm sad to see it go, I'm excited to discover how many of these hair and makeup looks will make the transition into the mainstream. These final two days were absolutely lovely, with more old-guard designers like Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, and Oscar De La Renta injecting an elegance that nicely hedged the experimental looks from younger designers. Proenza Schouler Gets Their Wartime On

Backstage at Proenza Schouler, war was on everyone's mind. No, not in a political way - this is Fashion Week, after all - but in an aesthetic way. "The inspiration was how women looked so glamorous during wartime, when they were working in the factories but still had their red lipstick on," said makeup artist Diane Kendal. "It’s a very modern approach; it’s not an obvious translation of Rosie the Riveter."

To bring forth a bold red lip, she blended MAC Red lipstick, set it with powder, dusted Red MAC Pro pigment on top, then topped it off with Red Electric MAC Pro pigment to give it that neon pink punch.

The hairstyles also took inspiration from the past, but in different ways. Some models wore their hair parted to the far side, letting long matte waves fall in front of their eyes; others had shiny, slicked-back, short styles. "We looked to 1920s glamour for the long-haired girls, and late 1970s disco for the short-haired girls," explained stylist Omar Lopez. To create the long-haired look, the hair team sectioned off hair, then used the ghd IV mini styler to create waves. A spritz of ghd Sea Spray created a matte effect, and then stylists used metal clips around the face to set the curl. Turns out that using a little retro technique can create a look that's thoroughly modern overall.

Backstage Beauty: Proenza Schouler

I just got back from Proenza Schouler, where long hair and cobalt blue eyes reigned. "It's never just about one feature, even if it's the most prominent thing, because everything has to work in tandem," said lead makeup artist Dick Page, who was remarkably calm despite the flurry of activity surrounding him. "The look is strong, but it's very easy as well."

To create the look, Page covered eyelids with a pearly gray cream shadow, then brushed cobalt blue shadow on top. Next, he surrounded the eye with teal shadow and added silver and gold highlights under the eyes. Lips went beige with Shiseido Automatic Lip Crayon in LC1, and as for the rest? No mascara, no blush-no kidding! I love seeing these bold shades on the runway, and I can't wait to see what's to come later this week.

Project Runway's Blayne would have had a heart attack if he had a ticket to Proenza Schouler's show, and not because of the jumpsuits. His style icon, Mary-Kate Olsen, sat in the front row. And while I wouldn't call it a heart attack, I'm kind of obsessed with her braided hairstyle - is it braidlicious or a miss? I can't decide, can you?

Feeling Crafty? Name Lancôme's Newest Pout-à-Porter Lipstick

We've seen it with Tracy Reese and Sally Hansen, along with Emanuel Ungaro for MAC. And now, in the latest crop of makeup-inspired-by-runway collaborations, Lancôme's Pout-à-Porter lipstick is back. But this time, it's in the form of a name-that-shade contest.

Previously, designers Behnaz Sarafpour, Proenza Schouler, Peter Som, and Thakoon have all partnered with Lancôme, with some wildly popular results. Next up? Add designer Chris Benz to the mix. His Spring 2010 collection will inspire the next Pout-à-Porter lipstick, which will debut on the pouts of runway models this September. Do you have a way with words? Tonight's Eyeliner Will Be Bright and Blue

If you can't wear bright colors on New Year's Eve, when can you wear them? I'm not one to go all out with a bold hue, but a hint of tint? No problem. Inspired by the Fall Proenza Schouler runway makeup, I used Mark Metalliner ($5) to draw a thin line of shimmery blue along my upper lash line. This liner gets the thumbs-up from me because it's inexpensive, the color is bright, and the tip is extremely thin - so it's easy to use even if you're a liquid-liner novice. And even in a blurry camera-phone shot, it grabs your attention. So go ahead, have a little fun with your makeup tonight - or make it a resolution to do so in 2009.

Model of the Week: Aminata

You probably don't know the name Mia Aminata Niara - she goes by Aminata professionally - but that should soon change.

The 5'9" stunner was born in Senegal, now lives in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, and speaks three languages. She's, as they say, big in Europe: Aminata has walked the runways of Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, Lanvin and appeared in magazines such as Vogue Germany.

How long have you been modeling?
Just two years for me. Before, I was just modeling in Paris. Every time I did a shoot or other [modeling] event, people would say to me, “Why don’t you go to New York? You have a beautiful face, you’d get work there!” I’d say that I was doing my schooling, that’s why. Now I say, “OK, I’m stopping school and moving.” This is my first time in New York, and I’m happy. It’s so exciting.

How do you keep your skin healthy?
I hope my skin is healthy! Every morning when I wake up, I put freezing water on my face. I like the feel of it, and I think it makes my skin stronger. That’s it.

When do you feel the most beautiful?
When I wake up. It’s natural - It’s much more "you." When you wake up, you see your face, and everything is fresh and clean because you’ve been sleeping for eight hours. That's when I feel best.
