Love It or Hate It? Rachel Bilson's Funky Topknot

We're used to seeing Rachel with her pretty cocoa-colored hair worn loose and wavy, but last night at the Lucky and Madewell party, she went for something a little different. She wore this messy knot at the top of her head, leaving the hair she'd pulled back lumpy, and center-parting the front section. Rachel's gorgeous, and it's good that she doesn't feel stuck with one hairstyle, but what do you think? Is this look a cool experiment, or a case of bedhead gone wrong?

I love that these traditionally warmer-weather shades are making the seasonal transition, and the range of fashionable colors means there are flattering colors and depths of tones for practically every skin tone. The Met's Costume Institute Gala: Rachel Bilson

It was all about the hair for Rachel Bilson at tonight's Costume Institute Gala. Long, straight, shiny, perfectly parted, and beautifully brown – all describe what framed Bilson's cute face. Her hair acted as a curtain for the rest of the look which consisted of dramatic eyes - complete with a bit of a smoky hue and false lashes - and subtly rosy cheeks. The lips were equally subdued. This allowed the focus to be placed on her teal dress and that striking hair. You likey?

Trend Alert: Tousled Waves at the Teen Choice Awards

Last night at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards in Los Angeles, the overall beauty look on the red carpet was casual chic. Although I'm sure the gals took a long time primping for the big night, they managed to create an effortless, age-appropriate effect.

How To: Scrunched Summertime Waves

Last year I talked to you about how to create the ever-popular sexy beach waves hairstyle, and this is a modification on that look. It's slightly more polished for a casual evening dinner or party that doesn't make you look like you've just come straight from the surf.

When I think of this hairstyle, Camila Alves, Jessica Simpson and of course Rachel Bilson come to mind. To find out how you can achieve scrunched summertime waves at home, read more.

STEP 1: While hair is soaking wet, comb out the snarls with a wide-toothed comb. Part hair and apply just a little bit of de-frizzing serum like Frizz-Ease by John Frieda to the lengths and ends.
STEP 2: Let it air dry a little bit and when it's damp (not wet!) generously mist it with either a homemade or store-bought sea salt spray and scrunch hair vigorously all over.
STEP 3: As a finishing touch (something that Rachel Bilson hasn't done here) gently tease your hair at the crown to create more overall height and volume, otherwise your hair risks looking limp and straggly.
STEP 4: To ensure shiny ends, apply some Renee Furturer Spray Gloss and then leave hair alone. Don't brush, comb or play with it or you'll only create separation and, heaven forbid, frizz!

Love It or Hate It? Rachel Bilson's Thin Braid-Band

Yesterday, Rachel Bilson did some shopping in Los Angeles with her hair styled in a low ponytail with a thin braid wrapped from ear to ear. This is a new take on the braid-band, as I like to call it. It's thinner and much more delicate than the hippie braid or the summer braid. Funny, isn't it, because Summer was actually Rachel's character's name on The OC - ahh, I really do kill myself sometimes. Do you like this look, and do you think you'd wear it?

When Rachel chopped her bangs, you were split on whether the cut worked for her. I have no doubt that her Costume Institute Gala hairstyle will inspire debate. It would be difficult for Rachel to look bad, but this hairstyle overshadows her delicate features. Like her former co-star Mischa Barton, she's letting her freckles show through - which is my favorite part of this look.
