Red lips and cool seasons always get along swimmingly, but this season, bright red really is the predominant color. But variety is the spice of life, and there's no one shade that looks great on everyone. With our variety of skin tones and personal styles, it's hard to navigate the trends — especially when most of the people shown wearing it are tanned and blonde (heck, it's still not easy even if you are tanned and blonde).

At the Avon Hope Honors Gala, all the celebrity Avon ladies (and the Avon man) were out, including Courteney Cox, Reese Witherspoon, Fergie, and Patrick Dempsey. Of course, no Avon lineup would be complete without Lauren Conrad, the spokeswoman for Mark. To complement her gray cocktail dress, Lauren opted for a 1940s glam makeup look, complete with glowing cheeks, winged-out liner, and warm red lips.

Red lips are one of those things that will never go out of style, and they're universally flattering. Problem is, many women don't wear them because they can't find a shade that's flattering or worry that it will be too bright to be pretty. Well, worry no more, fair ladies.

When I think of mustard-colored clothing paired with a brick-red lip, I can't help but think to the days of the early 1990s, when shows like The Fresh Prince of Bel Air and Saved by the Bell ruled the airwaves. But at yesterday's Power of Women luncheon in LA, Anne Hathaway proved that the dated color combo doesn't have to be so dated after all. By keeping the brown undertones associated with a traditional brick-red lipstick by the wayside, and going for a shade with both light red and golden undertones instead, this version of brick red is fresh and modern.

With her loosely pulled-back hairstyle, matte red lips, and shimmery black dress, Diane Kruger looks as if she stepped right out of a 1920s speakeasy. In actuality, she was stepping out for a screening of Inglourious Basterds in New York last night.
Diane's flapper-girl style has some modern-day touches, with gold eye accents and a hint of glimmery highlighter on the cheeks and forehead.

And since its inception in 2007, Lipstick Queen, her line of glosses, lipsticks, and lipliners, has been a success. So, who better to give tips, tricks, and quips on wearing lipstick — particularly in the red category — than King herself?

What I like most about a red lip is that it doesn't have to be too fussy, as the ladies of the 2009 red carpet prove. Whether it was subtle and matte like Anne Hathaway or bold and raspberry-toned à la Alicia Keys, it just goes to show you that red-toned lipstick is always en vogue. Check out my slideshow to see how these actresses worked just about every shade of red.

Red lips will undoubtedly always be in style, and on Saturday, newcomer AnnaLynne McCord got in on the action. Puckering up for the "Kiss For a Cause" event, the 90210 actress helped raise money for the National AIDS Fund at the Armani Exchange in Santa Monica by handing out sweet snacks and greeting shoppers in a kissing booth.
"I was inspired to create a look between old-school Michelle Pfeiffer, Olivia Newton-John from her days in Grease, and classic Marilyn," said celebrity makeup artist Napoleon Perdis.

Tomorrow morning, the world will watch the inauguration ceremony for Barack Obama, our 44th president. I'm all about showing my American pride, but when it comes to patriotism and beauty, I like to take a more subtle approach. So, perhaps I'll put an extra zip in my step with a sweep of shimmery blue liner on my eyelids or a cute star-patterned clip in my hair.
