I was a bit surprised to see Renée Zellweger on the red carpet at tonight's Costume Institute Gala, but, hey, it was a pleasant surprise. Her hair seems to have finally grown out of its awkward stage - either naturally or with the help of extensions. She was smart and kept it pulled back into a low ponytail. It may be a bit casual for the event, but I think the simplicity suits her. The same goes for her makeup, which barely highlights her pinched cheeks and lusciously full lips, all of which complemented her ornate necklace nicely. Nothing too out of the ordinary, but I think it works. Do you?

How-To: Renée Zellweger's Simply Chic Pin 'n' Twist

Renée Zellweger stopped by the Late Show With David Letterman last night to promote her upcoming flick, New in Town. Even though she's a city girl forced to adjust to small-town life in the movie, in real life she's looking cosmopolitan with this simply chic pin 'n' twist hairstyle.

Easy enough to do before work on a busy morning, but polished enough to last for a night on the town, this hairstyle is versatile and fun. Grab some bobby pins and learn how to replicate it when you read more.

Part where you normally would before using a comb to tease the hair at the crown of your head.
Gather your hair as if you were making a low ponytail. Twist the hair so the ends point upward, leaving a couple loose tendrils to frame your face.
Create a French twist. This should leave half of the ponytail twisted against your head and the other half flopping freely.
Use bobby pins (with your other hand) to clip hair right above where the twist ends until it's secure enough that you can let go.
Tuck the loose hair, small pieces at a time, so that all the ends are pinned. To get a carefree effect like this, crisscross and pin them randomly.

How-To: Renée Zellweger's Movie Premiere Makeup Look

Last night at the Leatherheads movie premiere in Los Angeles, Renée Zellweger managed to stand out even while taking pictures next to George Clooney and John Krasinski (some ladies just have all the luck).

Her fair skin looked flawless with just a touch of pale pink blush and minimal definition to her eyes and lips. If you are interested in product and application suggestions so that you can re-create Renée's movie premiere makeup look at home, read more.

FACE: Renée's skin looks smooth and impeccable. To achieve this look, try using a mineral powder as opposed to a creamy foundation or tinted moisturizer. Begin with clean, hydrated skin and then tap mineral foundation onto your face, paying extra special attention to the areas around your nose and lips. Then add your concealer to any dark, red, or uneven areas.
CHEEKS: Lightly sweep a pale pink blush such as Sephora's Blush Me! Mono in Rose Rebelle on your cheeks. Start by dabbing the color on the apples of your cheeks and pulling the brush towards the top of your ear in short, even strokes. If possible, use a contour (angled) blush brush to create more sexy cheekbone definition. Then add a touch of cream highlighter to your cheeks, nose, and forehead for a subtle glow.
EYES: Begin by applying a bone-colored eye shadow like Bare Escentuals Mineral Eye Shadow in Bisque over your lids. Next, add a black pencil liner to your upper lashes only. Follow with two coats of black mascara and a set of false lashes, if you're feeling saucy.
LIPS: This is a great opportunity to play with texture. I'd go for the Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bettina to create a smooth, pinkish-nude lip without any shimmer or shine. It may feel a bit funny at first, but these pencils last a long time and they look great.

Say It Ain't So, Renée!

Long hair is eternally popular, but short hair deserves to get attention, too. It's a lot more versatile than most people think, and it can be really sexy because it's such a confident look.

But sometimes, it just isn't done right. I hate to say it, but Renée Zellweger needs to find a new stylist. Pronto. Take a look at her here in New York, where she taped a talk-show with Kelly Ripa and the Reege. This cut does nothing to flatter poor Renee, whose pretty face is overshadowed by a sloppy cut. Fortunately, hair grows, and in a couple of months, Renée could have a stunning, chic cropped bob.

As I said, I love short hair and think it's a fashion-forward and sexy look. But there are a few things to think about if you go short. First, know which cuts flatter your face shape. What looks good on one person might not work for another. I've written a guide to help you see which cuts work for various bone structures, so start there. Then, when you're choosing a stylist, be sure to find someone who has experience with precision cuts. Be clear about what "short" means to you - for some, it's a pixie cut, and for others, it's a chin-length bob. Finally, don't freak out if the cut isn't exactly what you were hoping for. Hair does grow, after all-and I can't wait to see what Renée (and her new stylist, I hope) comes up with next.
